in 1898, physicist Isidor Isaac Rabi was born! He is most famous for his discovery of nuclear magnetic resonance.

Nuclear magnetic resonance is when atomic nuclei in a magnetic field absorb electromagnetic radiation and then re-emits it. The resonance frequency, which are certain oscillations of energy, change depending on the magnetic field and the properties of the atoms involved. By observing these changing frequencies, scientists can gather information about the chemical and structural details of molecules.

Rabi first described and measured nuclear magnetic resonance in molecular beams which was an extension of the Stern–Gerlach experiment. This work earned him the 1944 Nobel Prize in Physics and formed the basis for developing applications using nuclear magnetic resonance like magnetic resonance imaging, or MRI. MRIs are used in medicine for creating high-resolution images of the inside of the human body. These images are used to diagnose a wide range of injuries and diseases, including cancer and cardiovascular disease.

[OBITUARY]

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. Consolacion Ragasa, a Pioneering Research Professor at the DLSU Laguna Campus (then De La Salle University - Science and Technology Complex), and the first client of the Central Instrumentation Facility through the NMR Laboratory.

One of the most productive professors not only of the DLSU Chemistry Department but also of the entire University, Dr. Ragasa has over 280 research publications which have more than 3000 citations. She is also a well-known and well-respected researcher and has garnered awards from DLSU, Philippine Federation of Chemistry Societies, and the National Research Council of the Philippines.

Aside from being a CIF Client, Dr. Ragasa also served as a research mentor to members of the CIF Team. She was a graduate school mentor of NMR Lab Equipment Specialist Dr. Virgilio Ebajo, Jr. (publishing 20+ papers with her), and Chromatography Lab Analyst Deanne Hazel Pelobello during her undergraduate years.

The dedicated mentor often visited the lab during NMR analyses together with her then Masters (Charisse Tumbagahan) and PhD Students (Judy Perez and Rhanney Gonzales), as well as her former mentee and colleague Dr. Vincent Ng.

The CIF is also fortunate to have worked with the formidable educator, mentor, and researcher in the DOST-PCHRD funded Tuklas Lunas Fellowship Program for Natural Products Research.

Dr. Ragasa shared her natural products expertise, techniques, and "secrets" to 15 research fellows from universities across the country who were selected by the program.

Thank you Dr. Ragasa for dedicating your life's work to scientific research and the advancement of drug discovery in the country. You are a gem to the Facility, the University, and the Nation.

You will be missed dearly.
