AKBAYAN! YOUTH CALLS FOR JUSTICE FOR THE VICTIMS OF MSU BOMBING

Akbayan! Youth deeply laments the bombing incident during a Sunday mass at the gymnasium of Mindanao State University, where individuals are killed and injured.

What should have been a peaceful day for the faithful ended in a senseless tragedy. We express our sincere condolences to the victims and their families. We condemn the act of violence that occurred and call for justice for the persons killed in the incident. We deeply believe that violence towards any individual has no place in this country, most especially towards the vulnerable, the elderly, and the young.

We urge the MSU community and the government to keep our campuses a safe place and bring the perpetrators to justice.

Usa ka mainitong pagtimbaya para sa kagawasnon ug kalinaw!

Una sa tanan salamat sa XU-CSG sa pagimbita sa Akbayan Youth CDO na makiglambigit ug makigtambayayong kaninyo sa pagkontra sa mandatory ROTC.

Kami sa Akbayan Youth, uban ang Student Council Alliance of the Philippines isip parte sa Free2Choose Network, ikapila na ka higayon na nakigdiskurso sa mga estudyante sa tibuok nasod ug sa senado sa unsay problema aning proposed policy na mandatory ROTC.

Ako personal, gipili nako na kurso ang criminology og kami nakaagi og ROTC program, makaingon ko na na-enjoy nako ang ROTC kay ako ning kagustuhan, ug wala ko gipugos.

Pero dili tanan gusto inana, lahi-lahi ang appreciation natong matag usa sa kung unsaon ang pag serbisyo sa atong nasod. Uban gusto magbuhat og volunteer work, uban gusto mag disaster response, ug naa pud uban na gusto magtudlo. Pero para sa pipila ka mga tigpandaybsa balaod, ilang lantaw kini dili patriotic enough. Ayha ra patriotic kung moagi og military training and service. Naa ta tanan diri para ipahibalo nga dili lang militarisasyon ang paagi sa pagpakita sa atong paghigugma sa nasod.

Ila gina ingon na kung na adunay krisis mahitabo dili daw equipped ang katawhan, maong kinahanglan ang gobyerno manawagan na ang kabantan-onan mulambigit sa military training maong nakamandato sa Art. II Sec 4 sa atong constitution, may call upon the people, not all the people pasabot ana dili tanan katawhan, to defend the state. But the same provision also mentioned of Civil Service. Klaro na dili lang military service ang programa buhaton sa gobyerno for the people to be equipped in crisis and calamities.

Diha unta atong ipromote ang freedom among the students to have choose how they want to show their love for country, ug kani posible kung tagaan pud nato sila og kagawasan na mupili unsa nga programa --CWTS, LTS man o ROTC--ang ilang gusto kuhaon. Suportahan nato katong gusto mag military service, suportahan sad ang gusto mag immerse ug serbisyo sa komunidad isip sibilyan.

Kami ga panawagan sa atong mga mambabalaod na instead of mandatory ROTC, i-strict and implementasyon nato ang programa sa NSTP na ga exist na for almost two decades. Kay sayang ang kwarta na itaplak sa MROTC nga pwede unta maadto sa pag responde sa dako nga krisis sa edukasyon.

Ingon nila kung mapasa ning MROTC naay free accomodation, 50٪ tuition subsidy sa estudyante, and allowance and benefits. Mao ba ni ang prority? Kung maka-allocate man diay ta og ingyani ka dako nga budget sa ROTC, ngano dili man nato ni gamiton para pondohan ang free college education na balaod na karon? Ngano dili man nato gamiton para pangpuno sa deficit na 91,000 classrooms nationwide?

According sa data sa CHED ang dropout rate nagpabilin about 34 percent over the years, labi na sa mga private universities tungod sa pagtaas sa cost of education. Meanwhile sa high school 4 out of 10 dili maka human og grade 10.

Dili masulbad sa mandatory ROTC ang problema nga kinahanglan mas dako nga pagtagad sa gobyerno nga krisis sa edukasyon. Unsa dapat buhaton sa gobyerno?

AKBAYAN PARTY SLAMS SENATE FOR SIGNING THE COUNTRY'S BIGGEST INVESTMENT SCAM

"Our lawmakers just passed a measure enabling the country's largest investment scam. And the government itself is the con artist."

These were the words of Akbayan Party, as it decried the most recent developments surrounding the controversial Maharlika Investment Fund (MIF), calling it "the largest investment scam in recent memory."

The bill cleared the Senate earlier today, with 19 lawmakèrs voting in favor. Akbayan Party Senator Risa Hontiveros was the lone legislator who voted 'no' in the session. President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. certified the MIF bill as urgent just six days prior.

In this most recent version, Senators amended the bill to explicitly prohibit the Social Security System (SSS), Government Service Insurance System (GSIS), Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth), Home Development Mutual Fund (Pag-IBIG), Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA), and Philippine Veterans Affairs Office (PVAO) from investing in the MIF, whether on a mandatory or voluntary basis. Investments from these agencies were a major cause for concern among some Senators and pensioners.

Even with the removal of various pension funds, capital for the MIF will still come from the Land Bank of the Philippines (LandBank), the Development Bank of the Philippines (DBP), and the national government.

Akbayan Party called on the public to remain vigilant. "This bill shouldn't even exist. Safeguards may be in place now, but a law is only as good as its ex*****on. And we should not be lulled into a false sense of security just because these measures exist in the bill. Lalo nga tayong dapat mag-ingat at magbantay. The bill can still change. And it's very possible that they could just re-insert the SSS and GSIS as sources of funding in the final version. Pera ng bawat Pilipino ang nakasalalay dito. Nabudol na tayo ng isang Marcos noon, hindi na dapat ngayon," Akbayan Party President Rafaela David said.

Para sa Akbayan Party, ang mga nanay ay ang ilaw, lakas, at pundasyon ng bawat tahanan. Nararapat lamang na sila'y pangalagaan at pahalagahan. Kaya naman sa mga sa Kongreso at Senado, parating prioridad ng ating partido ang mga nanay pag dating sa mga polisiyang magtatanggol at mag-aaruga sa kanilang karapatan at kapakanan, kagaya na rin ng pagtatanggol at pag-aaruga nila sa ating mga pamilya.

MAMUHUNAN SA KABATAAN, IPAMANA ANG BUHAY NA KALIKASAN

Ipinapanawagan ng mga maka-kalikasang grupo ang temang 'Invest in Our Planet' sa pagdiriwang ng Earth Day ngayong taon, upang hamunin ang mga negosyo at pamahalaan na bigyang-prayoridad ang kapakanan ng mga likas-yaman at saribuhay sa kanilang mga polisiya, pamumuhunan at programa.

Nananatili pa ring malaki ang hamon upang mapigilan ang krisis sa klima at sa pagwasak sa mga likas-yaman sa ngalan ng nakakasira na 'pag-unlad'.

Dagdag pa rito ang ulat ng grupong Global Witness, kung saan nasa Top 5 ang Pilipinas sa mga pinaka-mapanganib na bansa para sa mga environmental defenders.

Para sa Akbayan! Youth, dapat ilaan ng pamahalaan ang nararapat na atensyon, pondo at prayoridad sa mga polisiya tulad ng Alternative Minerals Management Bill at Rights of Nature bill. Mahalaga ding naka-angkla sa prinsipyo ng 'just transition' ang anumang industriyal na pagbabago kung saan mas makikinabang ang mga mamamayan nang hindi rin nasasakripisyo ang kapakanan ng kalikasan.

Dapat ring makiisa ang mga industriya, paaralan at iba pang institusyon sa pagtangkilik at pagpapalago sa organic agriculture, renewable energy, responsible manufacturing and consumption, at iba pang mga alternatibo at maka-kalikasang paraan ng pamumuhay at kabuhayan. Dapat ring ikonsidera ang epekto ng climate crisis sa pamumuhay ng mga batayang sektor tulad ng mga kababaihan, katutubo, maralita at LGBT+.

Sa huli, ang kabataang Pilipino, mula man sa Tampakan, Sibuyan, o Cagayan, ang siyang magmamana ng ating nag-iisang daigdig. Nararapat lang na pakinggan, samahan at ipaglaban natin ang susunod na henerasyon upang maging mabuting katiwala ng ating likas-yaman at kapaligiran, para sa kanilang kapakanan at kapakinabangan.

Atong ginasaulog and Adlaw sa Kaisog isip kadungganan ug handumanan sa kaisog ug kalig-on sa katawhang Pilipino atubangan sa langyaw nga panaugdaog ug agresyon. Nahinumduman nato kung giunsa nila pagbarog sa langyaw nga pwersa ug nagkombate alang sa ilang kagawasan.

Apan, wala kini magpasabot nga maayo na ang tanan sa Pilipinas---wala matapos sa gira ang pakigbisog alang sa tinuod nga demokrasya. Ang mga aktibistang Pilipino padayon nga nakigbatok sa nagkalain-laing porma sa pagpanglupig ug kawalay-kaangayan sa nasud. Gikan sa panahon sa Martial Law ubos sa kanhi diktador nga si Ferdinand Marcos hangtod sa pagpasig-uli sa mga Marcos sa kasamtangang administrasyon ubos sa iyang anak nga si BongBong Marcos, ang mga aktibista nag-atubang sa harasment, pagpanghulga, ug kapintasan tungod sa pagsulti batok sa mga paglapas sa tawhanong katungod ug pag-abuso sa gahum.

Usa sa labing talagsaong pananglit niining nagpadayon nga pakigbisog mao ang pakigbisog alang sa hustisya para sa mga biktima sa panahon sa Martial Law. Niining panahona, liboan ka mga Pilipino ang gipriso, gitortyur, ug gipatay tungod sa ilang politikanhong pagtuo. Bisan pa sa pagkapukan sa rehimeng Marcos, daghan sa mga sad-an ang wala pa manubag sa ilang mga binuhatan, ug ang mga samad niining mangitngit nga yugto sa kasaysayan sa Pilipinas nagpadayon sa pagsamok sa nasud.

Ang pagpasa sa kontrobersiyal nga Anti-Terrorism Act of 2020 nagpatungha usab ug mga kabalaka bahin sa potensyal sa pag-abuso ug pagpanumpo sa mga tingog nga nagsupak.

Ang Akbayan! Youth MisOr ug Akbayan! Youth CDO naghatag og pasidungog sa tanang masa nga padayong nakigbisog alang sa tinuod nga demokratikong mga tinguha niini, bisan pa sa mga hagit nga pasistang estado batok sa katawhan. Kauban ninyo kami sa padayon nga pagpamata, pag-organisar, ug paglihok alang sa katawhan!

Sa unang adlaw sa pagbansay, nagtutok sa paghisgot sa ideya sa Human Rights ug Paralegalism isip himan alang sa kalingkawasan sa katawhan pinaagi sa legal empowerment. Sa ikaduhang adlaw, nakat-onan sa mga partisipante ang bagad sa legal nga sistema sa Pilipinas, unsaon pagpartisipar sa gobyerno pinaagi sa akreditasyon sa ilang mga organisasyon sa mga local special bodies, ug unsaon pagpahigayon og imbestigasyon ug dokumentasyon sa mga paglapas sa tawhanong katungod. Sa ulahing adlaw, gitudloan sila unsaon pagsugod mga diyalogo sa komunidad nga gusto nilang maka-estorya.

Karong adlawa ang unang adlaw sa makaylap nga transport strike sa mga drayber isip protesta sa planong jeepney phaseout nga makaapektar og ayo sa inadlaw nilang panginabuhian. Nagtuo ang Akbayan! Youth nga kinahanglang seguradohon sa gobyerno nga walay drayber nga mabiyaan. Kung ang gusto sa gobyerno mao ang pag-uswag, kinahanglan nga dili ang mga drayber ang magsakripisyo.

Dugang niini, angin sa modernisasyon nga gitinguha sa gobyerno mao ang posibilidad nga patas-an ang plitehan aron makabayad ang mga drayber sa modernized jeepney. Mao nga dili lang ang mga drayber ang apektado niining nag-ung-ong nga polisiya, apan lakip na ang mga komyuter- labi na ang mga estudyante ug trabahante.

Nagtuo ang Akbayan! Youth nga angay dapat nga kauban ang mga transport workers sa pagpanday sa makiangayon nga just transition plan ug pagseguro nga hapsay ug tawhanon ang kasinatian sa mga sumasakay atol sa pagpatuman sa plano.

Ginasuportahan sa Akbayan! Youth ang panawagan sa mga transportworkers ug mga pasahero:
1. Tukmang subsidy gikan sa gobyerno alang sa mga drayber ug kooperatiba sa gasto sa pagkuha sa bag-ong mga yunit
2. Hapsay ug klaro nga koordinasyon tali sa mga ahensya, transport workers, ug komyuter groups sa pagpatuman sa modernisasyon.
3. Pagrepaso sa consolidation ug subsidy requirements sa mga kooperatiba aron dili alkanse ang mga transport workers ug operators

Kung ang ideya sa gobyerno sa "kalamboan" naglakip sa pagsakripisyo sa atong mga katagilungsod, dili kini matawag nga tinuod nga kalamboan. Walay drayber ang dapat mabiyaan. #

37 taon na ang nakalipas nang ang isang pangyayaring bunga ng pagkakapit-bisig ng mga Pilipino ay umukit ng kasaysayan hindi lamang sa bansa, kung hindi pati na rin sa buong mundo. Ipinamalas ng 1986 EDSA Revolution ang kapangyarihan ng demokrasya’t pagkakaisa ng mga Pilipino upang mabawi ang kalayaang ipinagkait sa kanila. Ang pagbabagong inihatid ng EDSA ay dahil sa pag-asang hindi hinayaang mawala ng mga Pilipino noon at siyang nagtulak sa mga tao upang magkaisa't ipakita ang lakas ng sambayanan.

Ang pag-asang dala-dala ng mga Pilipino sa EDSA ay patuloy na bitbit ng sambayanan hanggang sa ngayon. Nagsisilbi itong inspirasyon upang ipagpatuloy at panatilihin ang labang nasimulan noon para sa bansang malaya’t pantay-pantay. Datapwat matagal man nang tapos ang EDSA, hindi ito natatapos doon; dahil malinaw ang mensahe ng kasaysayang ito: ang kaganapang ito ay dulot ng mga Pilipino at ng kanilang pag-asa, at kinakailangang isabuhay natin ito.

Ang Akbayan! Youth ay nakikiisa sa pagsasabuhay ng kasaysayang hatid ng 1986 EDSA Revolution, kalakip ang panatang hindi hahayaang mawala ang pag-asa’t sisiguruhing ang istorya ng kaganapang ito ay patuloy na magbibigay pa ng inspirasyon sa sambayanang Pilipino.

Nagpahayag ng pagkadismaya si Akbayan Senator Risa Hontiveros sa kaniyang manipestasyon sa pagbalik ng SOGIE Equality Bill sa Committee on Rules sa halip na matalakay na ito sa plenaryo.

Gaya ni Senator Risa Hontiveros, dismayado rin ang Akbayan! Youth sa paikot-ikot at mabagal na pagpasa sa SOGIE Equality Bill, ngunit patuloy na lalaban at titindig para sa lipunang pantay-pantay at walang diskriminasyon.

22 taon nang hinihingi ang pagkakapantay-pantay, hindi na ito dapat pinapatagal pa. Ipasa na ang SOGIE Equality Bill!

𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗗 𝗕𝗘𝗧𝗪𝗘𝗘𝗡 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗟𝗜𝗡𝗘𝗦!

Here are some problematic provisions in the proposed Mandatory ROTC Bill that you should know.

This will be our last shot at opposing the atrocious bill with a bloodstained history, that poses a threat to academic freedom as well as the protection and rights of Filipino students in the guise of ‘nationalism.' We must continue to persist against the errors of our past, not repeat them.

Instead, our resources should be zooming in on the more concerning educational crisis, which is being exacerbated by high transportation costs, soaring prices for basic necessities, unaddressed problems with students' declining mental health, alarming learning poverty, a lack of classrooms and educational resources, and incidents of harassment and discrimination in schools which are still yet to be resolved under our new and rather inert administration.

We reiterate that mandatory ROTC should not be the only means for young Filipinos to be trained to serve the country. The discussions, community immersions, and volunteer programs among others under the 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺 (𝗡𝗦𝗧𝗣) 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗯𝗲 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗱 instead as a tool to enhance the youth's civic consciousness.

We strongly reecho our call for the education authorities and the Philippine Government to address the 𝟭𝟮-𝗽𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁 𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗮 crafted and signed by hundreds of student councils, student organizations, youth organizations, and Sangguniang Kabataan Councils across the country.

AKBAYAN LEGACY: 23 YEARS OF FIGHTING FOR LOVE AND DIGNITY THROUGH THE SOGIE EQUALITY BILL

Exactly 23 years ago, on the 26th of January 2000, Akbayan, through then Representative Etta Rosales in the 11th Congress, was the first to file the Anti-Discrimination Bill, now known as the SOGIE Equality Bill. Through her leadership, the measure was approved on third and final reading in the 12th Congress, but failed to become a law because of inaction in the Senate. In 2017, through then Akbayan Representative Kaka Bag-ao, the SOGIE Equality Bill once again reached the House plenary and was approved unanimously. However, the delaying tactics in the Senate, again, prevented the bill from being enacted.

Now, on her second term, Akbayan Senator Risa Hontiveros continues to champion the measure that seeks to end discrimination on the basis of s*xual orientation, gender identity and expression, and s*x characteristics.

Today, we celebrate 23 years of fighting for love and dignity. We in Akbayan have always been a party of inclusivity and diversity. We are committed in strengthening our resolve in pushing for the passage of the SOGIE Equality Bill.

23 years of our struggle doesn't mean that we lost during every Congress that the bill was filed. It only means that discrimination and bigotry continue to gain power and be the cause of delay in the enactment of this measure — and this is the very reason why the SOGIE Equality Bill must be passed into law.

In spite of the setbacks, throughout the years, our movement persists. Because of our passion, we have been able to win victories at the local level through the passage of Anti-Discrimination and SOGIE Equality Ordinances, many of which were championed by Akbayan members and LGU officials.

The debate has long been over. All points against the measure have been asked and answered. We call on all legislators in both Houses to stand firm in their commitment to protect their constituents, not only LGBTQ+ persons, but all human beings who inherently possess s*xual orientation, gender identity and expression, and s*x characteristics.

To delay is to discriminate. Pass the SOGIE Equality Bill now!
