๐ข๐ฌ๐ก๐๐ซ๐ข๐๐ฌ ๐๐๐ฌ๐๐๐ซ๐๐ก ๐ข๐ง ๐ญ๐ก๐ ๐๐ก๐ข๐ฅ๐ข๐ฉ๐ฉ๐ข๐ง๐๐ฌ (๐๐๐๐ - ๐๐จ ๐๐ซ๐๐ฌ๐๐ง๐ญ)โ.
This is a project of TBTI Philippines to look at what was written about SSF in the Philippines during the recent decade. The e-book will also be a useful resource material for researchers of SSF in the country.
We hope to collect and include as many abstracts as possible of published journal articles or chapters in a book about small-scale fisheries in the Philippines for the period 2013 to the present. We also hope to launch this book during the First Philippines Small-Scale Fisheries National Symposium (PSSFNS1) on October 16-18, 2024 in Iloilo City.

The PSSFNS1 is the first symposium in the country that is highly focused on small-scale fisheries. By bringing together various stakeholders in the fisheries sector such as the fishers, fisheries managers, scientists, researchers, LGU representatives, policymakers, students, advocates, civic organizations, non-government organizations, advocacy groups, practitioners, media, and artists around the country, the symposium will provide a venue for the stakeholders to contribute to the creation of ways to make SSF sustainable and viable in the country. ๐

1st ICORFASA
ZSCMST supports ICORFASA 2024
Zamboanga State College of Marine Sciences and Technology, led by Dr. Rufa L. Mendez, Vice President for Research, Innovation, and Extension (VPRIE), attended the International Conference on Responsible Fisheries and Sustainable Aquaculture (ICORFASA) held last July 3-5, 2024, at Limketkai Luxe Hotel, Cagayan de Oro City. Eleven faculty members shared their research during the event, either in oral or poster presentations. The ZSCMST delegation includes Dr. Mendez, Dr. Maila V. Pan (Director of the Technopreneurship and Innovation Center), Ms. Charity T. Castro, Prof. Arthur L. Panganiban, Jr., Ms. Mary Flordiluna A. Guisada, Ms. Annie B. Gonzales, Prof. Nerissa B. Bongo, Dr. Rocelyn R. Alabata, and Ms. Kathleen J. Dalope. Two graduate students of the Master in Fisheries Management (Aquaculture Technology) program, Mr. Aldrin A. Artieda and Ms. Sherrah Mae Pinote, joined the oral competition. Moreover, Dr. Pan and Dr. Mendez served as parallel session moderators since ZSCMST is one of the collaborators for the said event. Dr. Mendez also served as one of the judges for the oral presentations. The group was also joined by the Training and Extension Director, Mr. Marlon Omatang; SCUBA Training Center Head, Mr. Raymond Antonio Lim; and Research Utilization and Information Unit Head, Ms. Jeanette M. Reyes. This was done in order to expose the OVPRIE staff to the recent trends in fisheries and build linkages with other institutions.
The said conference was hosted by Mindanao State University at Naawan, and the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), in collaboration with universities from Turkiye and the Philippines, serves as an avenue for scientific discourse, best practices sharing, and collaboration forging.
This participation affirms the commitment of ZSCMST to serving its mandate by providing necessary leadership in professional and technical instruction to produce the manpower needed for the sustainable use and development of natural resources in Western Mindanao, thereby accelerating economic growth and improving the quality of life of its people. This is us taking actions to empower people, protect the planet, promote prosperity, support peace, and forge transformative partnerships.

ZSCMST-IPTBM staff once again proved their commitment to strengthen intellectual property protection and commercialization in the institution as they graduated from the Agribusiness Mentorship Series (ABMS). This mentorship series is one of the major capacity-building activities under the Regional Agri-Aqua Innovation System Enhancement Program of the Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic, and Natural Resources Research and Development (DOST-PCAARRD) in partnership with the Agri-Aqua Business Incubation Network of the Philippines Inc. (AABINPhil, Inc.). ABMS aims to build the capacities of selected CMI staff on agribusiness development.
Participants from ZSCMST are Dr. Maila V. Pan, Director of the Technopreneurship and Innovation Center, also the project leader of ZSCMST-IPTBM, and Engr. Ray J. Arcillas, Head of the Knowledge and Technology Protection Unit, traveled to Tagbilaran City, Bohol, to attend the final module and the graduation ceremony of the aforementioned mentorship series held on May 21โ24, 2024, at Reyna's The Haven and Garden and Bohol Cultural Center.
The valuable insights and skills gained by Dr. Pan and Engr. Arcillas throughout the mentorship series are a great help to propel forward the innovations of the institution.

The Technology Transfer and Promotion Division (TTPD) of the Department of Science and Technology - Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic, and Natural Resources Research and Development (DOST-PCAARRD), led by Ms. Mae A. Dagaas, Ms. Mary Ranzelle A. Pasang, and Mr. Marko Russel A. Pasang, visited the Zamboanga State College of Marine Sciences and Technology (ZSCMST) on May 15, 2024, as part of the monitoring and evaluation of RAISE projects in Western Mindanao. It was known that ZSCMST is implementing the Establishment of Intellectual Property and Technology Business Management in the institution; it is one of the project components under the Regional Agri-Aqua Innovation System Enhancement (RAISE) Program.
The program started with a welcome remarks from Dr. Rufa L. Mendez, Vice President for Research, Innovation, and Extension, as well as Project Staff Level 2 of the ZSCMST-IPTBM. She expressed her gratitude and appreciation to the DOST as a whole. Then, Dr. Maila V. Pan, Director of the Technopreneurship and Innovation Center and the ZSCMST-IPTBM Project Leader, presented the accomplishments, challenges, and learnings from the implementation of the project. The DOST-PCAARRD TTPD afterwards shared their insights and suggestions on the presentation. Moreover, they gave some advice on how to attain the targets and manage the finances of the project to achieve the goal of intensifying intellectual property protection and commercialization in ZSCMST.
After the discussion, the DOST-PCAARD TTPD team, together with the other consortium member institutions, made an on-site evaluation of the ZSCMST-IPTBM Office and to the Office of the Vice President for Research, Innovation, and Extension. ZSCMST took on the challenge of elevating technology communication as five ZSCMST personnel, namely, Mr. Marlon Dennis C. Ochoa, Head of Technology Transfer and Marketing Unit; Ms. Jeanette M. Reyes, Head of Research Utilization and Information Unit; Ms. Charity T. Castro and Ms. Mary Flordiluna A. Guisada, all faculty members from the College of Fisheries and Marine Sciences; and Ms. May C. Balabat, Project Technical Assistant, actively engaged in the recently concluded training workshop on technology pitching and technology communication planning at the Grand Astoria Hotel on May 21โ24, 2024.
The said training workshop was organized by the Knowledge Management Hub (KMH), a project component under the Regional Agri-Aqua Innovation System Enhancement (RAISE) Program focused on enhancing the participantโs skills in presenting and promoting technological innovations effectively. Dr. Lily Ann D. Lando, former DOST-PCAARRD Applied Communication Division Director, served as the resource person for the activity. Dr. Lando outlines the crucial elements of creating an effective pitch. She also encourages interactive tasks and real-time feedback to guarantee that the learned techniques are applied when selling innovations, specifically to spark interest and capture the attention of potential investors.
The four-day training session came out to be a great success, giving participants improved technology pitching and communication planning skills that will aid in the future success of technology innovation and commercialization.

A business plan workshop was conducted on April 30, 2024, at the ZSCMST Research Conference Room. This activity is an initiative of the Agri Business Hub (ABH), a component project under the Regional Agri-Aqua Innovation System Enhancement in Western Mindanao (RAISE WesMin). The training aims to equip the participants to develop a business plan that includes market analysis and financial projections as a preparation for the envisioned commercialization of the institution's technologies.
Representatives from ZSCMST, which include Dr. Maila V. Pan, Director of the Technopreneurship and Innovation Center, and also the project leader of ZSCMST-IPTBM, together with Engr. Ray J. Arcillas, Head of Knowledge and Technology Protection Unit; Mr. Marlon Dennis C. Ochoa, Head of Technology Transfer and Marketing Unit; Mr. Macrino T. Tubat, faculty member from the College of Fisheries and Marine Sciences; and Ms. May C. Balabat, ZSCMST-IPTBM Project Technical Assistant, underwent the said training.

Dr. Maila V. Pan, Director of Technopreneurship and Innovation Center, also the Project Leader of ZSCMST-IPTBM, alongside Engr. Ray J. Arcillas, Head of Knowledge and Technology Protection Unit, flew to the University of Southern Mindanao in Poblacion, Kabacan, Cotabato on April 16-18, 2024, to attend the final module and graduation ceremony of the 6th DOST-PCAARRD Technology Commercialization Mentorship Series (TCMS).
The Technology Commercialization Mentorship Series (TCMS) was a 15-day training series conducted from February 2024 to April 2024. This intensive training series is an initiative of the Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic, and Natural Resources Research and Development (DOST-PCAARRD) partnering with Agri-Aqua Business Incubation Network of the Philippines Inc. (AABINPhil, Inc.) to produce project management staff that are competent on technology commercialization through various pathways.
During the graduation ceremony on April 18, 2024, Engr. Ray J. Arcillas was awarded as the Best Speaker during their presentation of IP valuation, and ZSCMST, represented by Dr. Pan and Engr. Arcillas was selected as Best Presenter in their market study utilizing a technology from the institution.
These awards are a testament of their dedication and as ZSCMST-IPTBM embark on the next chapter of mastering the field of intellectual property and technology business management, they carry the recognition earned through their unwavering commitment to enhance the technology commercialization activities of the institution.

Paper submissions for the year's edition of the Currents, the official ZSCMST research journal publication is now officially CLOSED. For those wanting to submit their papers, stay tuned for next year's edition! To those who have submitted their papers, your papers are now undergoing the rigorous review process, expect to hear from us soon.
As per the papers submitted, there are four (4) papers submitted from the Institution's College of Fisheries and Marine Sciences, one (1) from the College of Management Technology, two (2) from the College of Education and Liberal Arts. A good start for the relaunched college journal, may the next edition bring forth more paper submissions!
The Currents, the official research publication of ZSCMST, welcomes paper submissions from within and outside the campus and will undergo rigorous review process by subject matter experts relevant to your paper.
We are inviting all ZSCMST Faculty and Staff, and graduate students to submit your abstracts and be selected as presenter for the ICORFASA 2024.
