Sultan Mehmud of Ghazni (971-1030)
MEHMUD GHAZNI was one of the most successful military commander the world has ever seen. He was the be**er of three Hindu dynasties ( defeated Jaypal(father), Anundpal(son) and Trilochanpal (grandson) in different battles. He was the only muslim commander who led seventeen expeditions in india and never got defeated. He was the first who assumed the title of "Sultan" in his family. Apart from military conquests he kept great respect for scholars, poets and artists. At home(Ghazni) he was always found among the companies of poets and scholars. He formally sent invitations to notable scholars and granted them highly prestigious gifts. Al-bairuni and Al-firdousi were belonged to his court. In his reign, he converted Ghazni into the most wealthiest and famous capital of muslim world parallel to Baghdad.
Mehmud Ghazni was born in 971 in the House of Sabuktigin( a Turkish slave commander, famous for his love for deer). Mehmud' real name was "yamin-ud-dawla-abu-qasim-mehmud-ibn-sabuktigin". At the age of 27, mehmud took the reins of empire after successfully fought war of succession against his brother "Ismail". Soon after his elevation to the sultanate, he declared Independence from Samanid's dynasty and made allegiance with Abbasid caliph. When he was received the title of "yamin-u-dawla" he made it obligatory for himself to led expedition against Hindus every year.
Why Mehmud attacked subcontinent?
First, Sabuktigin and Jaypal made peace agreement but Jaypal tried to capture some parts of Ghazni. So morally it became compulsion to respond to his treachery. Second, Mehmud called himself " the shadow of God on Earth" therefore it became necessary to start holy war against infidels. Third, to pursue his great ambitions he needed huge money and subcontinent provided him easy avenue to collect wealth with minimum damage. So he started voyages to subcontinent.
Major attacked on subcontinent by Mehmud:
As mentioned earlier, Mehmud led 17 expeditions to indian subcontinent. He only annexed Punjab to convert it into buffer zone. Besides he only collected booties from other places. Some of his prominent attacks are:

*-- conquest of Bhaira 1006
*-- defeated Anudpal 1008
*-- Expedition against Qanauj 1018
*-- Conquest of Punjab 1021
* -- Assassination of Trlichanpal 1022
*-- Expedition against Thaneswar 1024
CONQUEST of Somnath:
His conquest of Somnath(1025) carried great importance in islamic history. Why he destroyed only Somnath and spared other temples? Somnath had become the house of polytheism. Shirk was rampant there. A big idol was hanged in its premises by using laws of physics and people worship it days and nights. Their administrators had openly challenged Mehmud to come. It was said that when Mehmud came near Somnath people were sat on the roofs of temple to see how their idol would destroy his army. But Mehmud proved temple's futility by razing the big idol to ground. His conquest of Somnath proved greatness of his military leadership.
Mehmud was great general, administrator and staunch lover of intellectuals. He always stood for right and justice was the main pillar of his sultanate. He never trusted his vizirs and advisers and used to say " vizirs are the enemies of the kings" but he followed Islam and always made decision by consensus. This great man who never defeated in life, was defeated by tuberculosis and malaria in 1030. May his soul rest in peace.
