Boys sail, while people on a fishing boat prepare to catch fish, after a ban was imposed on coastal activities following the cyclonic storm, Biparjoy, over the Arabian Sea, at the Ibrahim Hyderi fishing village on the outskirts of Karachi, on June 12, 2023. — ReutersBalochistan fishermen can leave for their fishing expeditions today.Depression to cause heavy rain with wind in impact areas.System lies over southwest Rajasthan and adjoining Tharparker.KARACHI: The authorities have allowed the fishermen of Balochistan to resume their activities as the threat of cyclone Biparjoy subsided after it weakened into a depression, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) said on Saturday.
As per the latest advisory issued by the Met Department, the fishermen in Balochistan can leave for their fishing expeditions today, while those in Sindh can resume their business tomorrow (Sunday). The PMD said that the cyclonic storm (CS) Biparjoy had moved further northeastward during the last 12 hours and converted into a depression. The system currently lies over southwest Rajasthan, India and adjoining areas of southeast Pakistan in Tharparker near Latitude 24.4°N & Longitude 71.2°E. PMD said that it is likely to move further eastward and weaken into a low-pressure area over Rajasthan, causing heavy rain with wind in the impact areas. Possible impacts:More rain-thunderstorms with few heavy falls and accompanied with gusty winds of 30-40 kilometres per hour gusting 50kmph expected in Tharparker, Umerkot and parts of Badin districts today.Rain-thunderstorms expected in Thatta, Sujawal and Mirpurkhas districts. The cyclone tore down power poles and uprooted trees Friday after pummelling the Indian coastline, but the storm was weaker than feared, and there were two confirmed deaths.More than 180,000 people in the Indian state of Gujarat and Pakistan's Sindh province fled the path of Biparjoy — which means "disaster" in Bengali — before it made landfall on Thursday evening. Two men in Bhavnagar district died on Thursday evening after drowning in flood waters, the Gujarat state government said.Another 23 people had been injured in the storm, relief director CC Patel told AFP.In Pakistan, the cyclone had no major impact, with rain reported in some parts of the southern metropolis of Karachi, which was on high alert.UN team lauds Sindh's prompt actionSindh Chief Secretary Dr Mohammad Sohail Rajput met a four-member delegation, led by Julien Harneis, the Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator Affairs at the United Nations.
The meeting discussed various issues, including the response to Cyclone Biparjoy and the rehabilitation of 2022 flood-affected. During the meeting, Rajput stated that Sindh was not severely directly affected by the coastal storm. The UN delegation appreciated the performance of the Sindh government, acknowledging that due to the prompt action taken by the Sindh government, people were timely relocated to safe places. They also acknowledged the coordination of all departments of the government in this process.Meanwhile, in a notification, the Karachi Commissioner's Office directed all authorities to resume educational activities in the city.

Members of the Ugandan police guarding a crime scene. — Reuters/FilePolice say Ugandan group ADF pledged allegiance to Daesh.Eight victims remain in critical condition at Bwera hospital.Govt official says number of students were still unaccounted for.At least 25 people including children were killed in a terrorist attack led by Daesh on a school in western Uganda near the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo, Reuters reported citing Ugandan police on Saturday.
Police said that militants of the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) — a Ugandan group based in eastern Congo that has pledged allegiance to Daesh — set a dormitory at Lhubirira secondary school in Mpondwe ablaze and robbed the food late on Friday."So far 25 bodies have been recovered from the school and transferred to Bwera Hospital," Ugandan police said on Twitter. However, how many of the dead were schoolchildren was not yet ascertained. Meanwhile, eight victims had also been recovered, who remain in critical condition at Bwera Hospital, they added. The police said that soldiers were pursuing the attackers who fled towards Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo, police added.District Commissioner Joe Walusimbi told AFP that a number of students were still unaccounted for.
A vast expanse on the border with Uganda and Rwanda, Virunga is the oldest nature reserve in Africa and is renowned worldwide as a sanctuary for rare species, including mountain gorillas.
Militias — of which dozens are active in eastern DR Congo — also use the park as a hideout.Originally insurgents in Uganda, the ADF gained a foothold in eastern DR Congo in the 1990s and have since been accused of killing thousands of civilians.Since 2019, some ADF attacks in eastern DR Congo have been claimed by Daesh, which describes the fighters as a local offshoot, the militant organisation's Africa Province wing. It is not the first attack on a school in Uganda attributed to the militia. In June 1998, 80 students were burnt to death in their dormitories in an ADF attack on Kichwamba Technical Institute near the border of DR Congo. More than 100 students were abducted. While in April this year, the ADF attacked a village in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, killing at least 20 people.Uganda and DR Congo launched a joint offensive in 2021 to drive the ADF out of their Congolese strongholds, but the measures have so far failed to end the group's attacks. In March this year, the United States announced a reward of up to $5 million for information leading to the capture of the ADF's leader.Additional input from AFP.

Catholic and other religious protesters gather at Dodger Stadium on Pride Night 17/06/2023

[ad_1]

LOS ANGELES — With “stop anti-Catholic hate” and "God will not be mocked” signs, protesters surrounded the main entrance to Dodger Stadium on Friday hours before The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence were to receive an award on LGBTQ Pride Night. The appearance of the rights advocacy group, whose members dress in drag as nuns, came after conflicting messages from the Dodgers and amid accusations from Catholics that their faith was being insulted. The controversy started last month when the Dodgers invited, then disinvited, then re-invited the Sisters to the team's 10th annual Pride night at the stadium in Chavez Ravine.People march outside Dodger Stadium after a prayer service in Los Angeles, on Friday.Jae C. Hong / APThe Sisters have been at the forefront of LGBTQ rights activism for decades. The group began organizing in the 1970s to support people with HIV/AIDS. In the end, the Sisters were awarded a Community Hero Award at a brief on-field ceremony held with few fans yet in their seats before Friday’s Dodgers game against rivals San Francisco Giants. The invitation infuriated many conservative Catholics, even at the highest levels of the U.S. hierarchy. On Monday, Archbishop José Gomez of Los Angeles, Cardinal Timothy Dolan of New York, and the president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, Timothy Broglio of the Archdiocese for the Military Services, joined in a statement calling it offensive and a mockery. The statement did not refer to the Dodgers by name but rather a professional baseball team. They asked Catholics on Friday to pray "as an act of reparation for the blasphemies against our Lord we see in our culture today."Phoenix-based Catholics for Catholics organized what it called “a prayerful procession” and had advised people against bringing children to the rally because it anticipated “hostility from anti-Christian protestors," The Associated Press reported. But, there were no disturbances or arrests from the protests, which extended from a main entrance to the stadium and down Vin Scully Avenue before the game, a spokesperson for the Los Angeles Police Department said.A man with a bullhorn repeated “Hail Mary, full of grace" and a prayer, and at one point the entrance was closed, with a chain link fence rolled across and police vehicles present, but it later reopened. It was not clear why. Police had no information and the Dodgers did not respond to a request for comment.Others basked in the event. One man attending the game told NBC Los Angeles that it mattered that the team was honoring LGBTQ issues."My team supports me, and I want to show my support," he said. "I think they [protesters] have their right, but today is like a special day for us. Especially since we don’t get respected a lot — especially for LGBT and for the Dodgers team to support us."The invitation of the Sisters, initially extended by the Dodgers in May, prompted a backlash that included a letter of objection by Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Florida, to Major League Baseball. In his letter to the league, Rubio called the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence an “anti-Catholic” group with members “who mock the faith” and encourage “perversion of Jesus’s command to ‘go, and sin no more.’"The Dodgers' about-face did little to calm matters. Equality California, an LGBT civil rights group, said the team “should be ashamed.”LA Pride, which among other things organizes the huge LA Pride Parade & Festival, said it was disappointed and that it would not participate in the Dodgers’ planned Pride event.“Pride is a fight for equality and inclusion for the entire LGBTQ+ community and we’re not going to stop now,” the non-profit said.Among those who disagreed with the Dodgers’ decision to host the Sisters was the team’s own star pitcher, three-time National League Cy Young Award winner Clayton Kershaw.Kershaw told the Los Angeles Times in late May that he didn't "agree with making fun of other people’s religions." The left-hander told the newspaper his opposition to the ceremony was not against the LGBTQ community, just with honoring the Sisters.“This has nothing to do with the LGBTQ community or Pride or anything like that,” Kershaw told the Times. “This is simply a group that was making fun of a religion, that I don’t agree with.”The Dodgers on May 22 apologized to the Sisters, as well as to the LGBTQ community at large, and re-invited the group. It said it reversed course "after much thoughtful feedback from our diverse communities, honest conversations within the Los Angeles Dodgers organization and generous discussions with the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence."Many of the signs at the protest against Friday's event dealt with insults to the Catholic faith, according to video from the scene. But the Dodgers' controversy comes after some companies have been targeted by conservatives and others over ads or merchandise featuring transgender people and issues. Bud Light was targeted by a boycott after it partnered with transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney on a social media ad, and Target in May removed some merchandise from its Pride collection after the retailer said its employees received threats.

‘Not Damaging Fellow Party Members, But Committed To Speak Truth,’ Miftah Responds To PM’s Criticism - UrduPoint
[ad_1]

In his recent address to the PML-N's general council, the Prime Minister referred to party members who criticize Finance Minister Ishaq Dar, suggesting they should not be a part of the PML-N.

ISLAMABAD: (UrduPoint/UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News-june 17th, 2023) Miftah Ismail, former finance minister, emphasized that he is committed to speaking the truth and not undermining his fellow party members.
During a conversation with a news outlet, Miftah expressed difficulty in hearing Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif's comments about those who aim to undermine Ishaq Dar.
In his recent address to the PML-N's general council, the Prime Minister referred to party members who criticize Finance Minister Ishaq Dar, suggesting they should not be a part of the PML-N.
Miftah, who previously served as the finance minister under the PML-N government in 2017 and during the current government's tenure in April last year, clarified that he was unaware of the Prime Minister's remarks and who they were directed towards.
However, Miftah has been openly critical of his successor, Ishaq Dar. On June 9, he stated that the newly unveiled budget for 2023-24 complies with the International Monetary Fund's demands but described it as "unsustainable."
Furthermore, Miftah highlighted that dealing with geopolitics in relation to the IMF is an ongoing process and not a recent development since last September.
Regarding the PML-N's general council meeting, it was reported that former Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi did not attend.
Sources suggest that Abbasi and Miftah, who were instrumental in establishing the intellectual movement forum "Reimagining Pakistan," have no intentions of parting ways with the Nawaz Sharif-led PML-N.
However, sources close to Abbasi revealed that he has been openly expressing his views on the government's political approach, criticizing economic policies and specific political actions.
Abbasi, who was previously the senior vice president of the PML-N, resigned from the party office after Maryam Nawaz was appointed chief organizer and senior vice president.
Interestingly, Abbasi was not given prominence during the PML-N's general council meeting. As a member of the National Assembly from Lahore, he currently sits on the government benches and was appointed as Prime Minister by Nawaz Sharif in 2017. Nawaz had initially designated Shehbaz Sharif as his successor, but later changed his decision after being implicated in the Panama papers case. (function(d, s, id) {

Yoga Guru Ramdev Says Patanjali Aims Rs 1 Lakh Crore Turnover In 5 Years

Patanjali Group is looking to clock a turnover of Rs 1 lakh crore in next five years, Baba Ramdev said.New Delhi: Patanjali Group is looking to clock a turnover of Rs 1 lakh crore in next five years as it expands reach to all sections of consumers with different offerings, its leader Baba Ramdev said today.Group firm Patanjali Foods (previously Ruchi Soya) will also play a significant part in achieving the milestone, having set a target of Rs 45,000-50,000 crore turnover in next five years. As part of its portfolio premiumisation strategy, Patanjali Foods introduced a new range of offerings in nutraceuticals, health biscuits, Nutrela millet-based cereals, and dry fruits."It is our vision to take the turnover of Patanjali Group to Rs 1 lakh crore in next 5 years and that of Patanjali Foods, which is our listed company to up to Rs 50,000 crore," Ramdev said while addressing a press conference.Patanjali has been focussing on self reliance in India, challenging the multinationals in the domestic market, he said adding,"Today we have overtaken all the MNCs except Unilever, which is still ahead of us.""Two decades back, when I had said we will make Patanjali's turnover at Rs 10,000 crore, at that time many had thought that Baba was being overconfident. Then again when I said about Patanjali's aim of a turnover of Rs 20,000 crore and compete with the likes of Unilever, some had asked us to be within our limits. Today, I proudly say that the turnover of Patanjali group has reached near Rs 45,000 crore level," he said.Ramdev said the group has been offering a variety of affordable products for the masses through Patanjali Ayurved and now it is trying to tap the "emerging upper-middle class" through the premium products offered by Patanjali Foods. At global level also, he said Patanjali is moving towards becoming a leading company in the FMCG segment with its reach touching around 200 crore people in 200 countries."In India itself, we have reached 70 crore people and aim to reach more than 100 crore people. We are making various preparations for this. We have reached the masses and are looking to cater to the upper-middle class with our premium products like soya chunks, premium oil and other Nutrela products," he said.Patanjali Foods CEO Sanjeev Asthana said the company currently has a turnover of Rs 31,000 crore."In the next five years our expectation is it will go between Rs 45,000 crore to Rs 50,000 crore," he told PTI here on the sidelines of the launch of products. He further said,"Our target is that from the current value offering that we have, about 5 per cent to 10 per cent will come from the premium products." Asthana said the company is building Nutrela as an umbrella consumer business orientation, which has got both value and a premium offering. On biscuits, he said the company has clocked a revenue of Rs 1,200 crore."This year, our target is upwards of Rs 1,500 crore. We're pretty confident that we will meet that objective. Going forward, a larger part of our share will come to the value and a significant part of it is going to come to the premium, where we are giving the healthier options without diluting anything that Patanjali stands for."

Stock Limit On Wheat After 15 Years To Check Rising Prices, Hoarding 13/06/2023

Stock Limit On Wheat After 15 Years To Check Rising Prices, Hoarding
[ad_1]

The government made it clear that it has no plans to tweak the wheat import policy (File)New Delhi: For the first time in 15 years, the government on Monday imposed stock limits on wheat with immediate effect till March 2024 in a bid to check hoarding and contain rising prices of the key commodity. The government also decided to offload 15 lakh tonnes of wheat to bulk consumers and traders from the central pool from month-end under the Open Market Sale Scheme (OMSS). Apart from wheat, rice will be offloaded to bulk buyers under the OMSS and the quantity will be decided in due course of time. The government made it clear that it has no plans to tweak the wheat import policy as the country has ample stock. It further said the ban on wheat export would continue and further export of sugar will be not permitted as of now.The stock limit on wheat has been imposed until March 2024 just before the commencement of General Elections to control prices. Last time, the stock limit was imposed in 2008.Briefing the media, Food Secretary Sanjeev Chopra said the stock limit has been imposed on wheat because some "unscrupulous elements are holding the stock and creating artificial scarcity" driving mandi prices up by almost 8 per cent in the past month."The wholesale and retail prices have not gone up to that much. With the lag, we expect the wholesale and retail prices will also go up as modal mandi prices are showing upswing. The government has imposed stock limit on wheat...," he said.Wheat prices in mandi rose to Rs 2,302 per quintal on June 7 from Rs 2,129 per quintal a month before.A stock holding limit of 3,000 tonnes has been imposed on wheat traders/wholesalers; 10 tonnes on retailers, 10 tonnes for each outlet of big chain retailer and 3,000 tonnes at all their depots. In the case of processors, 75 per cent of annual installed capacity, he said. They have been directed to declare the stock position and update them regularly on the portal of the Department of Food and Public Distribution. In case, the stocks held by them are higher than the prescribed limit, then they have to bring the same to the prescribed stock limits within 30 days of the issue of this notification. To improve domestic availability and check prices, Additional Secretary of the Food Ministry Subhod Kumar Singh said the government has decided to offload both wheat and rice under the OMSS to bulk buyers and traders.About 15 lakh tonnes of wheat from the central pool stock will be offloaded in the first phase to bulk buyers, flour mills, private traders and manufacturers of wheat products through e-auction. The lot size will be 10-100 tonnes per entity, he said."The registration process for e-auction has been opened by the state-run Food Corporation of India (FCI). Wheat auction will start from month-end," he said.In case of rice sale under OMSS, the quantity will be decided in due course of time. The reserve price of wheat has been fixed at Rs 2,150 per quintal for Fair and Average Quality (FAQ) grain and Rs 2,125 per quintal for under relaxed specifications (URS) and applicable till December 31.Whereas the reserve price of rice has been fixed at Rs 3,100 per quintal for private parties and the rate is applicable up to October 31, he added.Citing reasons for selling rice via OMSS, the Secretary said there has been 10 per cent increase in prices in the last year. "We assume in sinc with wheat, some people may link with rice and this is just the signal we are giving to the market and I think public stock holding everyone is aware. We will dispose so that prices are tapered."Asked if the stock limit on wheat was imposed to shield the market from the price rise crisis before the Lok Sabha polls, the Secretary said, "Wheat starts coming to the market from April 1. Once it comes to market, there is no need to impose stock limits. But we did it now and imposed until March 31. From April 1 (2024), new crop will come and at that time we presume there is no requirement of stock limit."When asked how the stock limit on wheat will improve local availability when the same imposed on edible oils failed, the Secretary said: "When there are no stocks and you impose the limit, then it will not come to the market. When the stock availability is there with the government and private sector, these limits we hope will have much more effect in controlling the prices."On reducing wheat import duty, he said there are no plans to tweak the policy as the country has enough supplies and even the ban on wheat exports would continue."FCI has wheat stock of over and above the buffer stock norm. Farmers and traders are also holding the stock. There is enough stock of wheat in the country. It is only that there are unscrupulous elements holding the stock and creating artificial scarcity. Only for that purpose, the stock limits have been imposed," he said. The Secretary further said, "We are not looking at import as the country has enough stock available in the country, both with FCI and private. There is no requirement for imports at this juncture. There is no need to look at import duty."He said the domestic wheat production is estimated to be a record 112 million tonnes in 2022-23 crop year as per the third estimate of the agriculture ministry."With 112 million tonnes, we have ample availability of stock. A lot of stock has been hoarded by traders and even the farmers are not releasing the stock thinking the rates will go up. That's why imposing stock limits makes sense at this juncture," he said when asked about the accuracy of the production estimate of wheat. The Additional Secretary also mentioned that considering private estimate of wheat, production to be higher by 5 million tonnes from last year. "We have 5 million tonnes extra production and since export is not happening, that stock is available in the country."Asked if the government took measures keeping in mind the possible monsoon failure this year, the Secretary said: "Monsoon is delayed. We are still expecting it will be normal. Only time will tell."(Except for the headline, this story has not been edited by NDTV staff and is published from a syndicated feed.)
