🎨 Watercolor Tips: Choosing Your Colors 🌈
Are you a watercolor enthusiast looking to enhance your artwork? Choosing the right colors is essential! Here are some expert tips to help you make the perfect selection. 🖌️
🎨 Initiation epitomizes restraint. When starting out, limit yourself to a dozen colors. You can always expand your palette as you progress and explore different themes. For example, if you love botany, focus on the green and brown ranges to bring your nature-inspired creations to life. 🌿🌸
🖌️ Tubes or Cakes? Here's the breakdown:
- Cakes of paint: These are easy to use and offer precise color application. Their packaging allows you to visualize the entire range of colors at a glance. They are also portable and ideal for outdoor painting. 🎨🌞
- Tubes: Recommended if you prefer working with larger amounts of paint, regardless of your brush size. They are great for creating color mixes without muddying the shades. Keep in mind that tubes are harder to measure and take longer to dry. Perfect for large formats or prolonged projects. 🧪⏳
📝 Memo: How Many Colors?
Start with a box of 12 cakes or a set of 6-10 tubes. With a few carefully chosen colors on your palette, you can create endless combinations. Even experienced watercolorists often rely on a limited number of colors to achieve stunning results. Remember, less is more! ✨

🎨 Choosing the right watercolor paintbrushes can make a world of difference in your artwork! Here are some essential models to consider:
1️⃣ The round paintbrush: This versatile brush is perfect for applying washes and drawing narrow lines. It's a must-have for any watercolor artist!
2️⃣ The square flat brush: Its flexibility allows you to draw precise lines and apply washes with ease. It's great for adding fine details to your paintings.
3️⃣ The wash brush: This wide and flexible brush can hold large amounts of water, making it ideal for spreading color quickly over vast areas.
If you're already experienced, why not explore new approaches? Consider adding these brushes to your collection:
1️⃣ The filbert brush: This flat and tapered brush produces a characteristic stroke that's perfect for precision techniques and glazing.
2️⃣ The fan-shaped brush: Recommended for shading and blending techniques, as well as dry brush work. It can create beautiful textures in your paintings.
3️⃣ The dagger brush: With its tapered bristles, this brush is great for drawing straight lines and adding intricate details to your artwork.
4️⃣ The script liner brush: This brush holds a significant amount of paint and allows you to create fine lines with ease. Perfect for adding delicate details!
Remember, the choice between natural and synthetic bristles is also important. Natural bristles like Kolinsky red sable are of fine quality, flexible, and long-lasting. Synthetic fibers, on the other hand, are firmer and absorb less water. They are great for adding vibrant, unadulterated color to your paintings.
So, whether you're just starting out or already experienced, choose your paintbrushes wisely. Start with a small number of brushes in different sizes and focus on quality. You can always add more to your collection as you gain more experience. Happy painting! 🖌️🎨
🖌️ Selecting the Right Watercolor Paper 🎨
Are you confused about which watercolor paper to choose? Don't worry, we've got you covered! Here are some tips to help you make the right decision.
1️⃣ Grammage: a matter of weight
Watercolor paper is ranked by the number of grams per square meter. The higher the grammage, the more resistant the paper is to paint and water.
- Under 300 g/m²: Less expensive but tends to buckle faster. Stretch it before painting to avoid any issues.
- 300 g/m²: The ideal grammage for most watercolors, neither too thin nor too thick. A good compromise for beginners.
- Over 300 g/m²: Heavier and thicker paper that holds moisture better. Suitable for those who like to take their time and do detailed work.
2️⃣ The grain of the paper: whatever you're most comfortable with
The choice of grain depends on your needs, subject, and working style.
- Satin finish: Provides a very smooth surface, perfect for narrow lines and details.
- Fine grain: The most frequently used texture. Slightly rougher than satin finish, it adapts well to any situation.
- Rough or torchon grain: Coarser texture that erases details but works great for color and relief effects.
3️⃣ Zoom: Pad or loose sheets?
- Pad glued on four sides: Sheets are stuck together, keeping the paper taut while working. Perfect for beginners.
- Loose sheets: Essential for large format work. Fasten them to cardboard, a panel, or a frame using adhesive tape or thumbtacks.
Remember to test the paper before making a choice. Load a dry brush with paint and apply it to see how the paper reacts.
Happy painting! 🎨💦✨
🎨 Watercolor Blocks: The Perfect Companion for Artists on the Go! 🌍✈️
Are you a nomadic artist looking for a convenient and versatile art material? Look no further than watercolor blocks! These amazing blocks are designed for use in all situations and allow you to unleash your creativity without any hassle. Here's why you need to get your hands on one:
🌟 Composition:
- Rigid Cardboard (or Rubber) Backing: Place your pad anywhere - easel, table, or even your knees!
- Supple Cover: Easily fold back the cover under the block for a seamless painting experience.
- 10-50 Sheets of Paper by Weight: Each sheet is coated with glue to stabilize and assure tension.
🎨 A Medium for Each Paper:
Watercolor blocks are specifically designed for wet techniques like oil, acrylic, and especially watercolor. You'll find different types of paper - smooth, grained, in various weights, and classic fine arts formats - all available in these blocks.
✨ How To Use Them:
The best part about watercolor blocks is that you don't need to pre-treat the paper! Gluing the sheets ensures a perfect painting session without the risk of curling in the presence of water. Once your masterpiece is complete and dry, delicately separate the used sheet from the block using a fine blade. Voila! The next sheet is ready for your artistic endeavors.
💪 Advantages:
Watercolor blocks are adaptable and perfect for spontaneous art sessions. Whether you're working outdoors or in the studio, these blocks save you precious time and eliminate the risk of paper distortion. With regularized tension in each sheet, your artwork will look flawless every time.
🎨 Trick of the Trade: A Palette... Made of Paper 🎨
For even more convenience, try out our "palette" pads! These pads offer a succession of glued sheets of paper, taking the shape of a real painter's palette. Mix your colors directly onto the top sheet, just like you would on your usual palette. Once you're done, simply detach and throw away the used sheet. No more tedious cleaning sessions!
🌟 Get your watercolor block and palette pad today and experience the ultimate freedom and ease in your artistic journey! 🎨✨
🎨 Watercolor Tip: Mastering the Art of Colors and Water Dilution 🖌️
Did you know that water is the key to achieving the lightness and luminosity in watercolors? But mastering water dilution and its effects on colors can be quite challenging. Here are some tips to help you on your watercolor journey:
1️⃣ Color values: It's all about intensity! By adding water, you can vary the hue from dark to light. The more you dilute a color, the more transparent it becomes, allowing the white paper to shine through and create beautiful light effects.
2️⃣ Overlaying colors: Embrace transparency! Instead of trying to cover one color with another, try overlaying them to create new mixes. Remember to add the darkest color to the lightest to save on paint, quickly apply the second color on top, and avoid painting over it again. Be careful though, adding a third color, even if it's lighter, can darken the mix.
3️⃣ White and white spaces: Watercolors don't have white! Instead, white paper acts as the medium and replaces the color white used in other techniques. To create white areas, simply don't add paint to those particular surfaces. You can use drawing gum to isolate a form or Chinese white for delicate techniques like snowy landscapes or sparkling water.
Remember, practice makes perfect! 🌟 Create your own color chart to understand the effects of water dilution on your favorite colors. And don't forget to tilt your paper slightly to avoid uneven spreading of the paint.

🎨 Learn the art of watercolors in just 6 simple steps! 🖌️
Step 1: Choose a subject
🌸 Start with simple subjects like a glass, fruit, or a bouquet of daisies. Don't overwhelm yourself with abstracts. Working from a photograph allows you to work at your own pace and revisit your work anytime.
Step 2: Observe the subject
👀 Take your time to observe and ask yourself questions. Focus on colors, tones, and variations. Pay attention to shadows and light distribution.
Step 3: Composition of the painting
⚖️ Balance is key! Trust your sense of balance rather than strict geometry. Ensure your subject livens up the painting without throwing off the composition. Don't feel compelled to fill the entire paper – sometimes simplicity is more elegant.
Step 4: Preliminary drawing
🖍️ Lightly sketch the broad lines with a pencil before adding color. Avoid thick lines that may muddy your colors. If you're not happy with your sketch, don't erase – rework your lines or start afresh.
Step 5: Adding color
🎨 Paint firmly and confidently, even if you go slightly outside the lines of your preliminary drawing. Remember that watercolors dry quickly, so work fast and explore the possibilities of your palette.
Step 6: Adding details
✨ In this final step, enhance the features in the foreground and add depth to your work. Work with slightly diluted colors for a softer effect.
Ready to create beautiful watercolor paintings? Start with these 6 steps and let your creativity flow! 🌈💧
⃣: Gather your materials. You will need watercolour paper, watercolour paints, brushes, a pencil and 2 pots of water and a cloth for cleaning.
Step 2️⃣: Prepare your canvas. Create a frame using reposition-able tape to define the boundaries of your painting.
Step 3️⃣: Sketch the basic elements. Use a HB pencil to draw a horizon line, rocks, and a simplified lighthouse. Use another piece of tape to delimit the horizon.
Step 4️⃣: Start with the sky. Wet the sky area with a brush and clear water. Add a mixture of yellow and red to create a warm sky. Leave space between each part to suggest clouds.
Step 5️⃣: Add depth to the painting. Create a mixture of Ultramarine Blue and a little Sienna. Use this mixture to deposit dark touches by creating spaces, giving the illusion of depth.
Step 6️⃣: Create the water reflections. Remove the tape marking the horizon. Using a barely damp brush and blue pigment, move back and forth, tilting the bristles near the ferrule. This technique creates a useful effect that mimics the reflections of waves. The grain of the paper will create white reservoirs, enhancing the water effect. You can also use a candle to create these reflections.
Step 7️⃣: Paint the rocks. Once everything is completely dry, mix burnt umber, sienna, and a touch of black on your palette. Use this mixture to paint the rocks, adding texture and depth.
Step 8️⃣: Add details. Use red to paint the lighthouse with alternating rectangles. Then, use a fine brush to add small details such as finely painted boats on either side of the horizon, some stylised birds, and a door and two windows on the lighthouse.
Step 9️⃣: Final touches. Gently remove the pieces of tape to reveal a clean border. Lastly, write the place and the date on your artwork.
This technique allows you to create a beautiful seaside landscape in watercolour.

Are you skilled with watercolour? Here’s an excellent method to hold your paper for those who work wet on wet.
Submerge the paper for 1 or 2 minutes in a tray filled with water, allowing it to absorb the water. This will prevent the paint from seeping into the core of the paper too quickly and will give you more time to handle it.
Place the wet paper on the Plexiglas sheet, it will remain flat as long as the paper is sufficiently wet.
This is the easiest method to ensure flat paper. Be careful not to trap air bubbles between the paper and the sheet of Plexiglas.
