It has been four days since Karachi was hit by torrential rains but we can still see knee deep water in many localities where its very difficult to reach.

After flooding and the disruption of water supplies, communities are most susceptible to stomach illness (e.g. hepatitis, diarrhea and vomiting etc). It is vital that people have access to clean water as prevention is better than cure. Otherwise, ORS is the mainstay of treatment for most of these diseases. Standing water also hosts breeding grounds for mosquitos which can lead to an increase in malaria and dengue. It is imprortant that any standing water source be either drained or covered. Tanks and utensils should be regularly washed with soap. People should sleep under mosquito nets and frequently apply insect repellant. Try to wear long sleeved clothes. Use mosquito coils

EMERGENCY RELIEF

The calamitous rains this week have caused unprecedented misery and devastation for so many people who already have such difficult lives.

People have lost their homes, their livelihoods and their lives.

A report by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government's Planning and Development Department has revealed that as many as 1.3 million could lose their jobs if a 45-day lockdown was put in place, warning that at least 460,000 people working as daily wagers and street vendors were set to lose their employment with "immediate effect".

The report, released on Sunday, highlighted the effect of the Covid-19 pandemic on the province's economy.

While estimating layoffs caused due to the lockdown in place to stop the spread of the pandemic, the report noted that "daily wage workers, paid worker by piece rate or work performed, paid non-family apprentice and street vendors" were highly vulnerable to the economic impact of coronavirus.

Update

Due to the prevailing COVID-19 situation, we extend our support to Robin Hood Army via Oosman and Rahima Bai Foundation in providing rations bags to daily-wage workers’ families. Each ration bag contains supplies to last an average family for 16 to 18 days, alleviating the need for daily-wage workers to risk contamination by leaving their homes in search of sustenance.
