al, both in terms of professional expertise in practically every walk of life, as well as intelligent minds behind a growing and prosperous economy. Yet, in spite of all the bounties, both natural and man-made, there are areas where we as Pakistan have lacked behind and are still living in the early 19th century; while other countries of the would, including some of our most immediate neighbors have made tremendous accomplishments. To name only one, that of health, as also our topic of discussion, it is deplorable that even though the health structure in the entire state may boast of budgetary allocations in billions of rupees, one may openly witness that even today the most deserving and needy are deprived of their fundamental right to health. A brief on the entire health structure of our nation would reveal that majority of the responsibility for providing some of the basic health facilities has been left to the private sector, which according to one estimate reaching more than 80 percent. This leaves a littlie more than 20 percent for the state to cater for the health. In this regard, the private sector most be appreciated for the tremendous contributions towards provision of health facilities to every nook and corner of the country. Yet, the private sector has its limitations, the most important of which is financing, even through it may boast of some of the most brilliant minds in the world, Just to provide a name a few amongst hundreds, we must all praise the work done by people such as A. Sattar Edhi, founder/chairman of Edhi Foundation, provider of nation's largest fleet of ambulances including air-ambulances. Adeeb Rizvi, the founder/chairman of Pakistan's largest center for treatment of ailments of Kidney (a state founded project). Khan (founder/chairman of the nation's largest orthopedic treatment facility (private sector), Imran KHan (founder/chairman of Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital, (Pakistani's largest hospital for Cancer treatment, (private sector). Faran Foundation
Amongst the lit of hundreds of organizations and famous personalities who have contributed for the welfare of deserving and needy in the health sector, the name of Faran Foundation too stands out as an organization committed to the care of the under-privileged and poor segments or our society. Faran Foundation is a non-political and non-profit organization, founded by one of the most eminent psychiatrist/physicians of the country, Prof Dr. Muhammad Siddique. With his love for public health and social sector reforms, Dr. Siddique's contributions towards making Faran Foundation a truly welfare organization is indeed an accomplishment best appreciated by visiting one of his health facilities run and operated under the aegis of Faran Foundation. As of the end of May, 2005, that is the first month after inaugurating a separate facility for consultation and treatment of patients suffering for paralysis/stroke, the FOMG had already admitted and commenced treatment of 3 Nos. of patients, and spent an approximate amount of Rupees 25,00/-. The expenses incurred on the treatment of the said patients included the consultation fees of the respective specialists, diagnostic and laboratory tests, lodging and food. Since all these patients belonged to the poor segments of the society, private donations and financial assistance of close friends of Dr. Mohammad Siddique incurred the entire expenses.
