Pythagorean theorem for grade 9:
Statement of the theorem:
In a right-angled triangle, the square of the length of the hypotenuse (the side opposite the right angle) is equal to the sum of the squares of the lengths of the other two sides.
Mathematical statement:
a^2 + b^2 = c^2
where a and b are the lengths of the two sides that form the right angle, and c is the length of the hypotenuse.
Proof:
Consider a right-angled triangle with sides of length a, b, and c, where c is the hypotenuse.
Draw a square on each side of the triangle, as shown:
The area of the square on side a is a^2.
The area of the square on side b is b^2.
The area of the square on side c is c^2.
Now, observe that the two small triangles formed by the squares on sides a and b are congruent (same size and shape).
Therefore, the area of the square on side c is equal to the sum of the areas of the squares on sides a and b.
c^2 = a^2 + b^2
This proves the Pythagorean theorem!
Example:
In a right-angled triangle, the length of the hypotenuse is 10 cm, and one of the other sides is 6 cm. Find the length of the third side.
Using the Pythagorean theorem:
a^2 + b^2 = c^2
6^2 + b^2 = 10^2
36 + b^2 = 100
b^2 = 64
b = √64 = 8 cm
Therefore, the length of the third side is 8 cm.
