Fan Post: Misha Jehangir
(Misha wrote this while sharing our page, her story is really heartfelt. Thank You Misha for believing in us and supporting us by sharing our cause! We wish you all the best for your future.)

"Educate. Elevate. Empower. It's just as simple as that. I won't go on and on about the importance of education, but I want to quickly share a personal story about how it impacts the tiniest details of people's lives.
About two years ago, while going back home from college, my rickshaw-wala asked me for help. He held out a receipt (typed in English) from a medical laboratory and asked me to read out the lab's name so that he could find the lab and pick up a report. I read it out for him, and moved on with my day.
Fast-forward to September 2016. So I've recently arrived in Montreal, Canada, for my undergraduate studies. It's a city where French, which I don't speak, is the most dominant language. I need to go back home from somewhere, so I walk into a metro train station for the first time in my life, all alone. It's so simple. Walk into the station, buy a ticket, go to the train you need to get on, get on it, and there you go, all done. But that experience humiliates me beyond anything, because, oh wait, there's a problem... I can't read anything. What? I study in one of the top universities in the world and I can't read...I’m stuck. Because all the sign boards and instructions are in French.
Honestly, I had to ask for help three times that day to be able to get home. And I went home and cried, and out of nowhere, I remembered my rickshaw-wala. And I finally understood what it must have felt like for him to ask me for help to do something so simple. To read a name off a receipt. It was probably not the first and last time he had to ask for help, simply because he didn’t receive an English education.
I'm privileged enough to say I’m an educated woman, and I have some degree of independence in life because of that. I am my own person, I can sustain myself, I’m powerful. I’m educated, elevated, empowered, but not everyone can claim the same. There are hundreds, thousands, millions of people around us who do not have the same privilege. It is our duty as humans to share with others what we were blessed with. Yes, we are blessed with education. Noor-e-ilm. The light of knowledge. It’s the only wealth in the world that doesn't perish if we share it. The more we share it, the brighter our world will be.
I’m writing this post to bring a project to your attention. It's called Noor-e-ilm and was initiated by a few students and staff members at BCCG. You can find more information on their page, which I’m linking below, but they basically aim to provide knowledge/education to adult, underprivileged staff members at their college for free. Its truly an honorable mission, and goes to show that no problem is too big to fix. Numbers don't matter. What matters is the impact on people's lives.
Education is every person's human right, man or woman, child or adult, at least for the sake of their self-esteem and confidence. Contribute to this project's success by following and sharing their page, donating to their cause, or by starting a similar project in your community. What they are doing deserves appreciation and support. I hope my words and their efforts inspire you in some way and help you spread Noor-e-ilm."

You all saw that it's the students teaching the junior staff here.
These volunteer's haven't been randomly selected. They went through a proper procedure and only the best of the best are teaching with us. We needed only about 16 students so it was a tough competition between volunteers. There were many who were too good but still couldn't get past the procedure.
In order to decide our volunteers we first asked for their CVs and took advice from their teachers over how serious they are when it comes to matters like these (This was aided by the fact that most of the volunteers were our class fellows and so we had an insight on their behaviour). Some were rejected in first phase and others were asked to come for an interview. Many challenging questions were asked in the interviews yet the brilliant volunteers outsmarted us.
As for I, Talha Shahzad, myself was interviewed by our coordinator.I have a long list of achievements as well as experience. Currently doing my Alevels from BCCG, I also teach O level chemistry at 'Home Academy' and have students in United Kingdom who study via skype. Apart from winning the role of honour 2017 'THE HUMAYUN MIAN AWARD', I won first position at SUPARCO speech competition in 2010 and also stood first in 3rd Annual Young Canvas International Art Competition and Exhibition just to mention a few.
At 'Noor-e-Ilm' we believe in quality education and so we handpicked the amazing volunteers to teach our junior staff! They are really doing great and we hope to keep on working for our society ^_^

In the words of one of my most respected senior and a great person Hamza Khurram, the founder of Dastaan e Zindagi and Izterab,"Ma Sha Allah Talha. I'm honoured to see people contributing to the society. Ye hamara farz hai talha ,Hamaray ilm py hamari zakat hai! MASHALLAH! Very impressed".
It's indeed an honour that Sir Hamza Khurram said these words.
Project 'Noor-e-Ilm' hopes to keep on educating people in future too! It is one of the best feelings to being smiles on faces of others ^_^

Do you know our story? Well here’s how we came up with Project ‘Noor-e-Ilm’
"I joined Beaconhouse College Campus Gulberg in September 2016, somewhere between doing the philanthropy work esp. on days like dignity day, I interacted a lot with the junior staff of my college.
One fine day I was talking to the warden of my college, she's a single mother striving to educate her children, and she told me how she used to be a brilliant student until her matric but then she got married and couldn’t continue her studies. Now as her daughter has grown, she tried to continue her studies but couldn’t fulfil her dream due to some personal issues. That day I saw in her eyes her dream of knowing things, her dream of education and somewhere my heart prayed that I could do something for her.
Another time a peon asked me to help him use his new smartphone, he asked me to install some social apps and teach him how to use them. I was surprised at first for he seemed to be quite knowledgeable. Anyway, I had time and so I agreed.
Teaching him all, made me learn a lot about their struggles and dreams. He told me stories of how other peons had such issues too and he will teach them all this now. He told me how he asked some other students for help but all were too busy. This was really shattering me.
Thus, one day I went to my councillor asking for coming internships. There I met Wahaj, he and councillor were already discussing to arrange an internship in college. There while thinking together we came up with the idea of helping those we see every day, the peons and custodian of our college. We decided to give those a platform to study who want to continue and teach them about how to use various technological stuff surrounding us. I realized that one peon asked me to help him install and use ‘WhatsApp’ but there are others who are too shy to ask for it. Thus, this was the best way to help them arrange classes for them where they can openly ask us for help and, we arranged personal enhancement classes to aid them learn stuff to improve their lives including special classes for IT tasks.

According to UNESCO Institute for statistics, just 55% of Pakistan’s adult population is literate. Due to such low levels of literacy Pakistan suffers greatly in every field.
It's been 6 weeks since project Noor-e-Ilm has been serving the underprivileged.
The idea behind this page is to spread awareness, we hope more people will begin such projects and promote education in Pakistan.
The below screenshot shows some of the words from another of our senior from our college, 'Misha Jehangir'. Thank you so much Misha Jehangir for supporting us 😊

Volunteer Testimonial

Saad Latif
Initially when I joined the Project Noor-e-Ilm, it was merely for the sake of a certificate and just to add this work experience in my CV but as the days passed and I took classes, things changed. The aim of this Project was 'The support staff of a school deserves to be educated, to raise their confidence and self-image'. At the start they were as disinterested in studying as I was in teaching but as the teaching went on I developed a sense of understanding and relation developed with them; a relation to impart the knowledge that I had to them. It no longer felt as a burden rather it made me realize that I was no more a regular A1 student. The feeling of accomplishment that I got when I started working for this project gave me self-confidence. Enlightening my students with the knowledge I have had over all these years was as satisfying as anything.

The questions my students ask me during my lecture is the most challenging part of my class and also my favourite. This interaction with them helps me understand their views about the system, and about life and helps me see the situation through their eyes. Reaching my inner best to give the staff what they deserved in their early stage of life made me actualize the difficult life they have had so far.

It's been 6 weeks and I can proudly say that being a part of this project has been a wonderful experience for me. It has given me the platform to put my education to good use and I'm saying this because I have felt a positive change in my students. I have had a chance to ask their views about this project and it gave me immense happiness when they told me that they used to think that education revolved around books and science but now they understand how vast it is and that education plays a role in every aspect of life. I'm glad that I was able to bring about this positive change of thinking in them.

In the picture is what Sir Imran Gulzar has to say about our project.
Sir Imran is a respected teacher who is teaching in many reknowned institutions of Lahore. He is an amazing teacher, as I've personally studied from him in my O level and he holds credit for a lot of my success.
Thank You Sir Imran Gulzar!😊

A policy paper released jointly by the UNESCO Institute for Statistics (UIS) and the Global Education Monitoring (GEM) Report shows that the global poverty rate could be more than halved if all adults completed secondary school.
At Noor-e-Ilm we hope to alleviate poverty with education!

In order to teach the students what they need we asked them for their qualifications.
Looking at the results, they were divided into two categories. Category A and B. Students in category A had done matric, so they are being taught syllabus of a higher level while, category B consisted of beginners thus its an honour for us to hand them their first notebooks.
The subjects being taught to each category can be seen in the image.
