Punjab University Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Muhammad Ali has said that there is a need to use social media responsibly to prevent fake news.
He was addressing the inaugural session of consultation with key stakeholders on ‘Strengthening Media & Information Literacy Framework in Pakistan' organized by Punjab University Department of Digital Media in collaboration with UNESCO and Media Foundation 360.
On this occasion, Vice Chancellor Government College University Faisalabad Prof Dr Kanwal Ameen, Secretary Information Tahir Hamdani, Senior Journalists Mujibur Rehman Shami, Mansoor Ali Khan, Salman Abid, Member Provincial Assembly Nadia Khar, Chairperson Department of Digital Media Prof Dr Savera Shami, Chairperson Department of Development Communication Prof Dr Ayesha Ashfaq, Hamza Khan from UNESCO, faculty members and students were present.
Dr. Lubna Zaheer Represents Pakistan at International Conference in Japan
Tokyo, Japan – Professor Dr. Lubna Zaheer, the Chairperson of the Film and Broadcasting Department at the University of the Punjab, proudly represented Pakistan at an international conference held in Japan. The event, which attracted distinguished delegates and scholars from 32 countries, witnessed Dr. Lubna Zaheer as the sole Pakistani professor among the global participants.
In her address, Dr. Zaheer spoke on the critical issues of financial and security challenges facing journalists in south Asia and especially Pakistan. She highlighted the urgency of professional training programs for journalists, emphasizing how such initiatives could enhance journalistic standards and safety in high-risk areas.
During her stay, Dr. Zaheer visited the Pakistani Embassy in Tokyo, where she met with Ambassador Mr. Raza Tarar. Their discussion focused on exploring collaborative ventures with Japanese universities, potentially enriching academic and media-related exchanges between Pakistan and Japan. Dr. Zaheer’s presence and engagement at the conference underscored Pakistan's commitment to advancing media standards and fostering international collaboration.
Punjab University Institute of Polymer & Textile Engineering has signed agreements with Marjan Polymer Industry, Ocean Paints and Ron Extrusions Engineering to strengthen industry academic linkages, help promote local industry and provide job opportunities for students. In this regard, a ceremony was held in the committee room of Vice Chancellor’s office here on Tuesday. On this occasion, PU VC Prof Dr Muhammad Ali, Director Institute of Polymer and Textile Engineering Dr Shahzad Maqsood, Director External Linkages Dr Sobia Khuram, faculty members, Chief Executive Officers and representatives of Marjan Polymer Industry, Ocean Paints and Ron Extrusions Engineering were present. Speaking at the event, PU VC Dr Muhammad Ali said that development of relations with industries is the top priority of the university.
PU VC Prof. Dr. Muhammad Ali paid a visit to Hailey College of Banking and Finance (HCBF). During his visit, the VC addressed the faculty and students on the importance of navigating excellence in future education.
Subsequently, Dr. Muhammad Ali inaugurated the newly developed basketball and badminton courts facility, which is a significant addition to the College's infrastructure and will provide HCBF students with a modern platform for physical activity and recreation.
During the campus tour, the Vice Chancellor inspected various student and faculty facilities, as well as the ongoing construction of new academic block. He expressed his appreciation for the efforts of Dr. Ahmed Muneeb Mehta, and emphasized the significance of such platforms in promoting physical nourishment and overall well-being among students.

Punjab University Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Muhammad Ali has said that instead of blame-game, the regional countries need to resolve their internal issues on their own and enhance economic cooperation with each other. He was addressing an international seminar titled “Stop Wars and Violence around the World” organized by the Department of Political Science, Foundation of Peace and Public Policy for Sustainable Governance at the Department of Political Science here on Wednesday. Punjab University Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Muhammad Ali has said that pandemics like Corona virus can be curbed through research in biological sciences. He said that data would be more precious than gold in future.
He expressed these views while addressing the inaugural session of the three-day national training workshop on ‘Multi-Omics Data Analysis & Whole genome sequencing’ organized by Punjab University School of Biochemistry and Biotechnology here on Wednesday.

PU Centre for South Asian Studies organizes international webinar to mark Black Day regarding India's Illegal occupation on Kashmir. CSAS Director Prof Dr Naheed S Goraya, AJK ' Member Legislative Assembly Ms Nabeela Ayoub Khan, University of Bolton, UK's Director CIF Dr Imran Khan, India Study Centre Director Dr Khurram Abbas, Coventry University, UK's Associate Professor Dr Serena Hussain, General Secretary PLF Lahore Mansoor Kataria and others highlighted Indian atrocities in Kashmir and called upon the United Nations to take serious practical steps for resolving Kashmir issue as per its resolution. In their address, Dr. Serena spoke on abrogation 370 & 35A: 5 years on, Dr. Khurram discussed conflict resolution approaches for Jammu and Kashmir dispute: policy options for Pakistan, Dr. Imran shed light on cultivating strategic narratives and dialogical framing on Kashmir while Mr Kataria highlighted the role of youth in recent movement in Kashmir. University of the Punjab wholeheartedly congratulates it’s another Proud & distinguished alumnus, Mr. Justice Yahya Afridi to be appointed as the 30th Chief Justice of Pakistan. Mr. Afridi holds LL.B and MA Economics degree from University of the Punjab, later he acquired his LLM degree from University of Cambridge, London. His secondary and higher secondary education from Aitchison & GC University Lahore are a testament of his competence, hard work and dedication from the younger age.
Recently, Justice Afridi was nominated for appointment as the Chief Justice of Pakistan by a 12-member special parliamentary committee on 22 October 2024 and took the oath of office on 26 October 2024. We wish him the best for his new role of substantial authority & significant responsibility.

Prof. Dr. Lubna Zaheer Meets with Pakistani Ambassador in Japan to Discuss Academic Collaboration
Tokyo, Japan — Prof. Dr. Lubna Zaheer, Chairperson of the Film and Broadcasting Department at the University of the Punjab, held an insightful meeting with the Pakistani Ambassador to Japan during her visit to the country. The ambassador warmly welcomed Dr. Lubna Zaheer and shared valuable insights into the strong relationship between Pakistan and Japan, highlighting Japan's rich culture and its academic affairs.
During the meeting, Dr. Lubna Zaheer and the ambassador H E Raza Bashir Tarar discussed avenues for enhancing connectivity between universities in Pakistan and Japan, focusing on academic exchange and collaboration. Dr. Lubna Zaheer sought the ambassador’s support in establishing connections between the Film and Broadcasting Department and leading Japanese universities. The ambassador ensured his full support in this regard, and they explored various options to facilitate such partnerships.
The discussion, which lasted more than an hour, also covered broader topics, including the role of the embassy in addressing community issues, fostering human resource exchange between Pakistan and Japan, and strengthening bilateral relations.
In addition to the meeting, Dr. Lubna Zaheer had the opportunity to meet Pakistani students currently studying in Japan on Japanese scholarships. She engaged with the students, learning about their experiences and the opportunities provided by Japanese institutions.
The visit reflects a positive step toward fostering academic collaboration and cultural exchange between the two nations.
Deputy Consul General of Turkiye Lahore Ali Arbash inaugurated a modern lab in the Punjab University Library to preserve the largest collection of hundreds of years old manuscripts in Pakistan. In this regard, a ceremony was organized in Punjab University Library here on Monday. On this occasion, Punjab University Pro-Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Khalid Mahmood, Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA)’s Country Head Muhsin Balci, Head of experts Ms Nil Baydar, Chairman PU Department of History Prof Dr Mahboob Hussain, Chief Librarian Dr Muhammad Haroon Usmani and others were present. The lab is being funded by TIKA.
