The Pakistani community in the UAE has a rare opportunity to visit Pakistan Navy ships, Madadgar and Zhob, currently docked at Port Mina Rashid Dubai until January 11, 2024. The ships are open for visits on January 10, 2024, from 11 am to 1 pm.
Approximately 1.7 million Pakistanis reside and work in the UAE. The ships, built in Pakistan, include the multipurpose small tanker Madadgar and the law enforcement and policing vessel Zhob.
The visit aims to strengthen bilateral collaboration between Pakistan and the UAE.
The European Union's Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) announced that 2023 was the hottest year on record, likely the warmest in the last 100,000 years.
The global temperature records, dating back to 1850, were confirmed by C3S Director Carlo Buontempo. The planet's average temperature in 2023 was 1.48 degrees Celsius warmer than the pre-industrial period (1850-1900).
Although the 2015 Paris Agreement aims to limit global warming to 1.5C, temperatures in 2023 exceeded that level on nearly half of the days, setting a concerning precedent.
Despite climate targets, CO2 emissions hit record levels, and 2023 marked the highest CO2 concentration and the first year with every day more than 1C hotter than pre-industrial times.

People in China are enjoying a real-life winter wonderland with the return of the Harbin Snow and Ice Festival. ❄️ The festival, which takes place each year in the city in China’s north-east Heilongjiang province, is one of the biggest of its kind. This year, the sculptures featured Chinese-style buildings and bridges, fairy-tale castles, towers and even one fashioned after Beijing's Temple of Heaven. At night, the structures are lit up with colourful lights, making the ice glow in an array of different colours.
The broadcasting rights for the Pakistan Super League (PSL) have been sold for a huge amount of 6.3 billion rupees. This is 2 billion rupees more than the previous deal. A private TV channel won the rights in a competition against three other contenders. The bidding started with a minimum price of Rs. 7.358 billion.
In the first round, the previous rights holder bid Rs. 5.30 billion, while a state-owned TV channel and two other competitors bid Rs. 5.17 billion, Rs. 4.40 billion, and Rs. 4 billion, respectively. However, none of them met the minimum price, so there was a second round of bidding. The channel with the highest bid in the first round increased its offer by one billion rupees in the second round, securing the broadcasting rights for the next two years for a total of Rs. 6.30 billion.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) approved this deal, with 95% of the money going to the PSL franchises. This means the franchises will receive over Rs. 3 billion every year. Digital rights were separately bought for Rs. 1.85 billion. It's important to note that the PCB only allowed companies with their own sports channels or rights from another channel to participate in the bidding. If the minimum price wasn't met, the PCB could have reconsidered the bids or postponed the process. Luckily, a consensus was reached after a substantial bid in the second round.
For comparison, the minimum price for the previous contract was Rs. 3.7 billion, and the rights were eventually sold for Rs. 4.3 billion for two years. Interestingly, the same entity has once again secured the broadcasting rights. The PCB had a company called 'Colganbauer' evaluate the media rights of PSL before the bidding, and they determined a value of 6 billion rupees.
The Ministry of Religious Affairs in Pakistan has opted to return more than 21,000 Hajj quotas to Saudi Arabia under the government scheme. Instead of accommodating over 5,633 unsuccessful applicants from the regular Hajj scheme draw, the government decided to refund the money.
With 69,438 applications received in the regular Hajj scheme, only 63,805 were selected, leaving 5,633 applicants unsuccessful. In the government Sponsorship Hajj Scheme, where the quota was 25,000, only 4,000 applications were received, resulting in over 21,000 vacant quotas set to be returned to Saudi Arabia.

In Pakistan, 18 women are about to graduate from the country's first training program designed to produce female bus drivers. The initiative was launched by the Sindh Mass Transit Authority (SMTA) in Karachi, aiming to increase the number of women in the public transport sector.
The training, which started on November 1, included learning driving skills and road safety rules. The graduates may work on different types of buses and the upcoming bus rapid transit (BRT) system in Karachi.
The initiative reflects efforts to empower women economically and enhance their participation in the public service sector.

A new spacecraft from the United States is trying to land on the moon, and it's called "Peregrine." This is a big deal because it's the first time a private American aerospace company is leading a mission to the moon. The rocket carrying Peregrine, called "Vulcan," was launched from Florida early in the morning.
The company behind the rocket, United Launch Alliance (ULA), said everything looks great after liftoff. The goal is for Peregrine to land on the moon around February 23. If successful, it will be the first time a US spacecraft softly lands on the moon since the last Apollo mission in 1972.
Peregrine's mission is to collect information about the moon's surface, which will be helpful for future human missions to the moon. This is an exciting step in space exploration, especially with a private company taking the lead in a lunar mission.
The interim government in Pakistan has launched the 'Pakistan Startup Fund' (PSF) to support startup investment in the country. Under this initiative, the government plans to invest up to Rs2 billion annually in the startup sector. The goal is to help startups secure their initial external funding.
Dr. Umar Saif, the caretaker minister of IT & Telecom, and Science & Technology, announced the launch of PSF and mentioned that over $800 million has been invested in Pakistani startups in recent years. The PSF is designed to provide equity-free capital to startups, helping them close a Venture Capital (VC) round.
Explaining further, Dr. Saif mentioned in a tweet that if a foreign VC is evaluating a Pakistani startup for a $1 million investment, the VC would only need to invest $700,000. The PSF would contribute a grant of $300,000 to help finalize the funding round. Importantly, the government won't take any equity or board position in the startups benefiting from the fund. The PSF aims to lower the risk for international investors to invest in Pakistani startups, contributing to the growth of the startup ecosystem in the country. The hope is to generate a value of at least Rs50 billion per year for the startup ecosystem.
In 2023, Pakistan's startups faced challenges, attracting only $75.6 million in funding, a significant drop from the previous years. Experts attribute this decline to global factors, such as rising interest rates and a cautious investment environment, affecting startup fundraising efforts not only in Pakistan but globally.
