About SHED
With microfinance as its business platform, SHED is a campaign movement to pursue the ambitious dream of a world of individuals and communities free from all forms of poverty and exploitation. Given this huge and complex task, SHED advocates a holistic or an integrated approach to eradicate poverty. Hence SHED, seeks partnership with individuals or institutions whose programs and services are aligned with SHED’s vision. This partnership is forged through the spirit of volunteerism and a shared responsibility. SHED is a membership organization of benefactors (support partners) and beneficiaries (the poor) committed to a world free of poverty. SHED is a non-membership-fee movement. SHED was founded by a group of people who single-mindedly saw the compelling need for human empowerment among the poor in the face of social degradation, financial exploitation, and moral decay. Underpinned by microfinance and in support of the mission, SHED:
1. introduces a radical concept of a shared responsibility from a shared vision to eradicate poverty through partnerships with individuals, communities and networks, e.g., local government units, civil society, parishes and other associations.
2. promotes the concept of membership, without membership fee among the impoverished sector to partner with SHED and commit to a shared responsibility that will shore up their chances to get out of the cycle of poverty through continuing availment of membership benefits. Our Priorities:
• Focus on Family – We work with poor families who are the worst affected by poverty. Thru a collaborative, selfless effort with others, regardless of faith, color or race, SHED plays the lead role in bringing about changes or transformation within families and communities.
• Organizing the Poor – Creating organizations of and for the poor are at the heart of our work. Our cell groups, mostly women coming together, form the core body that promotes living out the spirit of volunteerism and cooperation. The dynamics of an organized grouping for the poor provide a powerful forum where life-long lessons are learned and lives are changed.
• Restoration of Human Dignity – Continuing financial education and value formation seminars are priorities to break the shackles of exploitation and deliver the poor from the ancient bo***ge to poverty. Through these, individuals within groups are empowered to form their own thoughts on matters that could influence decision-making affecting their homes or communities. Our Strengths:
• Motivated by the Vision: Our motivation is inspired by the vision of “a world free of poverty”, and the accompanying mission to help in the realization of that grand dream. SHED’s universally-driven principles and values are deeply rooted in promoting a culture of: Justice, Excellence, Service with Integrity, Unity and Stewardship with Dignity.
• Passion and Commitment to the Vision: Our hearts are rooted in the cry of the poor, abandoned by the harshness of life’s realities. SHED’s passion and commitment to rescue the poor should turn dreams into fulfillment of hopes. SHED remains committed to pursue all that is right, but sustainable, in all its programs.
• Proven Track Record – Our principals are major contributors to the development success story of the value of microfinance to help eradicate poverty in the Philippines. Our leadership’s 10-year experience in pushing the frontiers of poverty eradication is a testament to SHED’s commitments. The Work of SHED
SHED translates its grand dream into reality. Its business concept is anchored on the absolute empowerment of the poor through wealth creation and value formation. With microfinance as the business platform, three empowerment programs revolve around the work of SHED: Economic Empowerment, Social Empowerment and Human Empowerment. Given the huge and complex issues on poverty, SHED advocates that poverty eradication must be a shared responsibility among the government, the private sector and more importantly, the impoverished members of society. SHED partners with communities in the recruitment and enrollment of qualified individuals as members in the SHED program. It is also through the partnership with communities that the delivery of programs, products and services are realized.

Economic Empowerment
SHED’s commitment to free the poor from economic exploitation starts from the basic need to educate them to be wise in their financial transactions. SHED commits to break the ancient culture and cycle of onerous practices that shackles the poor to remain poor through continuing education and provision of quality microfinance services. SHED begins empowering the poor by investing thru savings and collateral free loans. Members are initially invested with a savings account ranging from 200 to 500 pesos each. A week after the investment is made, members are encouraged to save 50 pesos or US$1 per week. Once the member is able to match the initial savings invested by SHED. a member is entitled to borrow a maximum of 5 times the total savings deposit. This loan can be used only to start or enhance an existing livelihood. Absolute loanable amount in future borrowings is increased based on the member’s business growth and cash flow capability to pay. SHED partners with business mentors who would volunteer to help members grow or expand their micro-enterprises. SHED’s wealth creation program for the members continues by rewarding them 100 pesos for every 5,000 fully paid loan. This amount is reserved for their future investment by allowing them to buy a preferred share of stock in the SHED Stock Corporation. This investment is guaranteed a rate of return of 8% per annum. The funds built up in this pool of capital are reserved as part of the funds that will help grow and develop the micro-enterprises of the members of the SHED NGO. Social Empowerment
The poor will remain poor for as long as they live in shanties. SHED seeks to mitigate the poor’s vulnerability to various risks. Social Housing is central to SHED’s social empowerment program. Socialized loans include micro-loans for repair or construction of new houses ranging from 50,000 up to 150,000 pesos, or US$1,000 to 3,000. SHED’s strategy is to leverage this size loan with donor funds to bring down further the member’s social cost of borrowing. Other socialized loans focus on the needs of the family. These include micro-insurance for life and accident, health care, education and toilet loans to improve sanitation and promote a healthy environment. These loans are made available to members who continue to remain faithful and compliant to the disciplines of SHED’s programs. In promoting these programs, SHED seeks crucial value chain linkages with appropriate individuals or institutions that can help provide quality services at the lowest possible cost for the member. The extent of funding these programs depends on SHED’s surplus from microfinance operations combined with the level of success in donor fund raising. Human Empowerment
What does it profit a man to gain the whole world and yet loses his soul? Delivering the poor out of poverty is not just a matter of economics and creating a healthy social environment. Human Empowerment is SHED’s overarching attention in all its programs. Values drive behavior and life is all about relationships. SHED advocates a healthy relationship among all stakeholders to achieve the dream of a world free of poverty. SHED commits to deliver a weekly value formation program that is gospel-based. This program will be undertaken in partnership with community organizations who share the same vision as SHED’s. Its core values of Justice, Excellence, Service with Integrity, Unity and Stewardship with Dignity will be cascaded not just among SHED’s employees but to all the members as well. SHED builds and strengthens families as the basic unit essential to community development. In a maternal society like the Philippines, the woman, as wife and mother plays an active role in the house. ”A family that prays together stays together”. SHED will encourage all members, as a family unit, to pray and make God number one in all their relationships and undertakings. Women are empowered to play an active role in strengthening their cell groups for collective action to address inequities that make them poor. SHED’s services goes as far as the protection and promotion of human rights through legal services to all members on issues that continue to bring them poverty. SHED does this in partnership with associations that support SHED’s vision and mission. SHED makes available true, life transforming stories of members.
