The Lal Mahra tombs are situated 53km south of Dera Ismail Khan city. It is locally known as Adhira or graveyard. The actual number of tombs was eleven but unfortunately only four tombs have survived. The graveyard once had 120 graves but only a few remain now. Its origin and history are not known as there are no historical chronicles or epigraphic records available. No one knows who is buried in these graves.
Dating the sites is tough on the basis of style, but scholars have dated it to the 11th or the 12th century CE. Archaeologists refer to these as “The Anonymous Tombs”.

The city’s name stems from a big rock erected by the ancient people. The word Ranigat is a compound of words from two different languages: “Rani” and “gat”. “Rani” is the Hindi word for “queen” while “gat” in Pashto means a “huge rock”. So Ranigat translates to “Queen’s Rock”. The referenced rock is situated on top of a mountain that people probably once used to worship.
Ranigat is one of the largest Buddhist complexes in ancient Gandhara. The Queen’s Rock is located on top of a hill about 600m above sea level. It is visible from a long way off and accessible through a long flight of stairs constructed with financial support from the Japanese. According to local lore, the archaeological remains of Ranigat are where a queen used to come out from her palace and enjoy a leisurely evening sitting on the huge rock.

Saidu Sharif : Archaeologists divide the life of the Saidu Sharif sanctuary into three periods. During the first period between 25 BCE and 100 CE, a symmetrical arrangement of the monuments was seen. This progressively crowded the stupa terrace in the second and was followed by an extension of the terrace itself in the third period. These periods respectively date to the 2nd, 3rd and 4th to 5th centuries CE. These three construction periods are also prominent on the upper terrace. The monastery first expanded and then contracted back to its original dimensions in the third period, a fact that testifies to the decline of the entire sacred area.

The seated Buddha is certainly the most impressive piece of sculpture to be seen in all of the Gandhara region. The 7m-high figure of the Buddha is seated on a high throne in a pose of mediation, which is rendered excellently. The snail shell curls of Lord Buddha have been carefully rendered above his head. The eyes are open only to tiny slits and there is a prominent topknot (ushnisha) with long ear lobes. The folds of the robe are stringy, with a planned alteration of high and low ridges. Although the figure exhibits Gandhara style drapery with pleats and hair, it goes for a rather solemn, powerful form of the torso. The representation of the folds of the robe is in agreement with the usual form adopted in the area for other Buddha figures.

Padmasambhava – founder of ta***ic yoga and a seminal figure in Tibetan Buddhism — is said to have been born in the valley shortly after the construction of this statue. Some scholars point out a strong Western influence but such similarities, if any, are not very obvious. That is why the Buddha image carved on the rock at Jehanabad is dated to the 7th or the 8th century CE which corresponds to the Tang Dynasty of Central Asia. Many other rock-carvings of similar workmanship in Swat are dated to later centuries.

Takht-i-Bahi
Takht-i-Bahi is the most complete Buddhist monastery in Pakistan. Takht in Persian means “a throne”, and Bahi means a spring of water, and this imposing “throne on a spring” is situated in the higher reaches of district Mardan in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. Located 2km east of the Takht-i-Bahi bazaar, the Buddhist site is spectacularly positioned on the modest hilltops between 36 to 150m in height. The buildings are constructed of stone, its design based on the Gandhara patterns – diaper style – using local dressed and semi-dressed stone blocks set in a lime and mud mortar.
