Polycystic o***y syndrome is a disorder involving infrequent, irregular or prolonged menstrual periods, and often excess male hormone (androgen) levels.

The ovaries develop numerous small collections of fluid — called follicles — and may fail to regularly release eggs.

Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is more common than you think, affecting 8-13% of women aged between 15 and 44 years.

PCOS often presents during puberty and can develop in the 20's. Some symptoms will last forever and some will stop at menopause, but treatment can help reduce the impacts. The cause of PCOS is not currently known.

If you're experiencing any of the symptoms above, speak to your doctor.

Treatment
PCOS treatment focuses on managing your individual concerns, such as infertility, hirsutism, acne or obesity. Specific treatment might involve lifestyle changes or medication.
✨Lifestyle changes
Your doctor may recommend weight loss through a low-calorie diet combined with moderate exercise activities. Even a modest reduction in your weight — for example, losing 5 percent of your body weight — might improve your condition. Losing weight may also increase the effectiveness of medications your doctor recommends for PCOS, and can help with infertility.
✨Medications
To regulate your menstrual cycle,
✨Lifestyle and home remedies
To help decrease the effects of PCOS, try to:
Maintain a healthy weight. Weight loss can reduce insulin and androgen levels and may restore ovulation.
✨Limit carbohydrates. Low-fat, high-carbohydrate diets might increase insulin levels. Choose complex carbohydrates, which raise your blood sugar levels more slowly.
Be active.
Exercise helps lower blood sugar levels. If you have PCOS, increasing your daily activity and participating in a regular exercise program may treat or even prevent insulin resistance and help you keep your weight under control and avoid developing diabetes

PCOS doesn't involve only one hormonal imbalance. At any given time, your entire endocrine (hormone) system is looking for balance. When one hormone goes haywire, it often has negative effects on other hormones. Here are 3 common and harmful imbalances we see;

1️⃣ HIGH CORTISOL
Studies show PCOS creates an altered cortisol metabolism, showing an increase in circulating stress hormones like cortisol, which is involved in the stress response, whether that be emotional stress (worried about bills, kids etc), or physical stressors (undereating or following a poor diet etc).

High cortisol levels can lead to mid-section fat gain, poor energy levels, acne, muscle weakness & loss, lowered metabolic rate, fatigue, irritability, and difficulty concentrating.

2️⃣ HIGH INSULIN
Insulin resistance is a condition that the large majority of those with PCOS will have. And triggers one of the most impactful imbalances, high insulin levels. High insulin is one of those imbalances that trigger another unwanted hormonal imbalance, high testosterone, and also impacts LH levels.

Other symptoms of high insulin levels are weight gain, poor energy levels, sleep issues, increased hunger & cravings, skin pigmentation issues, and inflammation.

3️⃣ HIGH TESTOSTERONE
High testosterone is responsible for many of the unwanted and emotionally impactful symptoms of PCOS, such as acne, hair loss on the head, and excess facial and body hair growth. Other symptoms of high androgen levels include menstrual cycle irregularities, fertility issues, and mood disorders.

I have heaps of posts throughout our feed on how to best correct these imbalances but feel free to ask a question on this post or send us a DM.

PCOS can cause missed or irregular menstrual periods, excess hair growth, acne, infertility, and weight gain. Women with PCOS may be at higher risk for type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart problems, and endometrial cancer.
