✅To remove excessive fluid from brain, we need something that has to have 2 properties :
🍁1. It should increase the osmotic pressure in the blood vessels
🍁2. It should not pass through the blood-brain barrier and stay inside the vessels
🍁Normal Osmolarity of body fluids is around 300 mOsm.
🍁Hypertonic mannitol solution increases the osmolarity of of blood (plasma) and more water from ICF and interstitial fluid will enter the blood vessels (removing extra fluid from brain).
✅Mannitol then acts as an osmotic diuretic ; it is filtered through the glomerulus and once in the nephron, it attracts more water and is excreted along with extra water in the urine.
