Werner The Art Jewels
Blog about jewelry, art history and everything related to jewelry. Jewelry is my love and great passion. I do not sell jewelry.
I am in the business of writing about jewelry and admiring the outstanding artists who create it. This is a continuation of the site "KamWer The Art Jewels", which was created in 2014, unfortunately for reasons beyond my control it was destroyed. In creating posts and descriptions I use, from my own knowledge, public domains, publicly available sources. Photos come from the company websites of the
Sir Elton John Collection: Jewel Box
Auction FEBRUARY 9 10:00 AM - FEBRUARY 27 2:00 AM EST | ONLINE.
That's right! Elton John has decided to clean out his closet and put his acquisitions up for sale.
I'll skip the clothing auction because it's not my favorite subject - the jewelry auction is something I've been looking forward to for several years and something I was severely disappointed by.
The auction is more than modest, only 123 items, of which maybe 30 are something really interesting, the rest are simply souvenirs for Elton fans, mostly fashion accessories in silver.
A modest "collection" of jewelry with diamonds and colored stones draws attention, somewhere at the gray end in front of the luxury watches I flashed a brooch with citrine and diamonds, 1 decent bracelet with diamonds, a brooch with rubies and a brooch with sapphires by Marcus & Co.
The auction is reminiscent of a garage sale, but nevertheless, just for the fun of it, you should check out the auction catalog, which you will traditionally find in the comments of the post. Have a great week!
Royal & Noble, including jewels from the collection of an important nobleman January 17, 2024 - 14:00 GMT - London
Ahead of a fabulous auction put together by Sotheby's, January is the perfect opportunity to start the year with a bang!
The auction includes porcelain, home furnishings and jewelry, among the highlights of the auction I will mention the fan of Emperor Haile Selassie I - a fan made of silver decorated with the niello technique, decorated with feathers.
The second highlight is 2 fragments taken out of the imperial state crown, both fragments were taken out to fit a crown for Queen Elizabeth II for her coronation.
Below is a magnificent parure made of gold and pristine citrines, the set was made around 1860 in France. Be sure to check out the Sotheby's website, as the catalog is beautifully arranged. Have a great day!
Elena Okutova, Russian artist and jewelry designer, below earrings inspired by Japanese pine. I invite you to visit the artist's website, with the rest of the info in the comments.
Dear Friends,

🧐😍
Earrings by fashion brand CHANEL from the High Jewelry Tweed Cambon collection - made from 18-karat yellow and white gold, platinum, diamonds, yellow diamond and rock crystal.
It is one of the more interesting offerings for Christmas this season, and there is plenty to choose from, as the jewellery world has made an exceptionally strong presence in the luxury goods market this year.
I would mention the many jewellery auctions of the auction houses Sotheby's and Christie's, where new records were set for stones and entire jewellery collections. Compared to 2022, this year was staggering!
JEWELRY. WORKS OF JEWELRY ART XIX-XX CENTURY
Desa Unicum, December 11, 7:00 pm, Warsaw
The Christmas auction is ahead of us, as always I particularly recommend the auction catalog, which has been very beautifully prepared - link in the comments.
Invariably, among the works auctioned, diamonds lead the way, the auction will feature several items really expensive and interesting, my attention has been drawn to a brooch (very reasonably priced) made at the beginning of the 20th century in Moscow - pictured below.
You are cordially invited!
Fabergé, gold boxes, Vertu and Imperial artworks
Sotheby's auction 28.11 London
Quite a treat for any collector, a major auction of Russian art kicks off today. Among the items to be auctioned, of course, the works of the Fabergé brand are not to be missed.
Below is a paper knife, set with gems including diamonds and cabochon-cut amethyst - decorated with color enamel on guilloche. Moskwa 1899-1908.
Brooch with cameo, silver decorated with marcasites, brooch in dual-function form: brooch-pendant. The product was created in the early 20th century.
The cameo was very carefully crafted, the delicate profile of the woman was perfectly highlighted. The figure is reminiscent of Renaissance images of the Madonna, who is contemplating the miracle of the Annunciation in concentration.
The brooch is amazing, there is an abundance of delicacy that makes the fleshy shade of the shell emanate a soft light, this is one of those collectibles that comes along very rarely.
Sentimental jewelry - pictured is a mourning locket with strands of hair of relatives who have passed away, worn by Denmark's Queen Louisa.
Dear Friends!
It has been a dream of mine to travel in Egypt, especially to visit Cairo and Luxor, which are the railroad of archaeology.
Below is a golden chair on display at the Egyptian Museum in Cairo, made of wood covered with pure gold, inlaid with precious stones, including copper lapis lazuli and coral.
An absolutely unique object, showing how much reverence the pharaohs and gods of Egypt held.
Two great Sotheby's auctions on November 6-7 and 8.😁
Ahead of us are two great auctions that fire the imagination of collectors viz: Vienna 1900 and Magnificent Jewels.
I have already written about the Vienna Jewels auction, it is now the most heavily trafficked auction in November. As a curiosity, I'll add that historical jewelry packaging will also be auctioned. So collectors can purchase unique cases for their jewels.
Today, however, I will mention the November 8 auction in Geneva, where we will once again witness the bidding of unusual jewelry, my attention was drawn to the earrings, which are undoubtedly the stars of the auction.
The pear-shaped earrings (pendants) weigh 6.29 and 6.14 carats, respectively, each set with an additional cushion-shaped diamond weighing 2.83 and 2.70 carats, respectively.
I heartily recommend, as always, the Sotheby's auction catalog.
Magnificent Jewels including The Bleu Royal
Christie's November 7, 2023 auction.
November is the season of holiday auctions, and this year Christie's surprises with its selection of gems, among the items to be auctioned will be vintage Cartier clocks, a sizable amount of sapphire jewelry and collectible goodies left over to heat up the holiday shopping.
At the November 7 auction, the undoubted star will be the Fancy Vivid Blue diamond ring, whose color is uncorrected, meaning that it is not only the most beautiful diamond of the Christmas auction, but also one of the few such spectacular naturally colored diamonds.
For those fascinated by beautiful brooches, I have something unusual, pictured here is a pair of diamond encrusted swallows, made of gold and silver in France around 1890. The swallows are captured in flight, one has "ruby" eyes, the other "emerald" eyes. A perfect Christmas gift. Enjoy your viewing!
Ring with yellow sapphire weighing 16.61 ct, Cartier circa 1950, Paris.
A necklace/tiara from the collection of Archduchess Margaret Sophie of Austria, Duchess of Württemberg (1870-1902), the necklace was made by Viennese jeweler A.E. Köchert, circa 1893.
The necklace takes the form of a floral rose branch, set with white and yellow diamonds and Burmese rubies in a luscious shade of red. The stones were perfectly selected, and thanks to the different cut forms, the diamonds sparkle with an exceptionally "vivid" luster.
The unusual piece can be worn as a tiara after removing the elements from the setting, the flowers can be removed from the necklace and pinned into the hair, and the central element of the necklace is a stand-alone tiara. A special screwdriver is included in the set.
The most stunning thing about the necklace is the naturalism with which the work was done, looking at the necklace one has the impression that the rose branches are almost real, surrounded by morning dew - the work is stunning!
The necklace can be admired at Sotheby's - link to the auction in the comments. Have a great weekend!
Princess Thyra's sapphire tiara from Denmark 👑
The unusual tiara was sold by Danish auction house Bruun Rasmussen, now owned by Bonhams, in December 2022.
The history of the sapphire tiara dates back to the late 19th century; Princess Thyra (1880-1945) received it as a gift from her parents, King Frederik VIII of Denmark and Queen Lovisa - most likely on her 18th birthday in 1898, when her official debut probably took place.
The tiara was included in the collection of the Danish royal family after the death of the princess, Princess Thyra passed the tiara on to her niece, the hereditary Princess Caroline-Matilda of Denmark, who was married to the hereditary Prince Knud of Denmark.
Princess Karolina-Matilda passed the tiara on to her daughter, Danish Princess Elizabeth, and it is still owned by descendants of King Frederick VIII of Denmark and Queen Lovisa.
It was probably made by the jewelry company E. Wolff & Co. in London and sold by A. Michelsen in Copenhagen.
The jewel consists of extremely beautiful and pure sapphires in a crystal blue color, which it owes to the cabochon cut, and the flower ornaments are decorated with diamonds in the best shades of white. The whole thing literally sparkles like stars.
The auction caused a sensation, the Danish royal family has a rich collection of jewelry and it is extremely rare for any part of it or a related item to go to auction, which in itself causes great excitement and quickly doubles the price of the item.
For the weekend! I recommend the black nephrite - Sotheby's 🧐
Below, a cuff bracelet of polished black nephrite, intricate white gold lace and diamonds weighing a total of 1.5ct. A truly magnificent 😍
Fine jewels - October 3, 2023. - 10:30 - Paris 😁
There are only 2 days left until the latest jewelry auction prepared by Sotheby's. The auction promises to be fabulous - the prepared items are mainly antique jewelry, among which I spotted a diamond bracelet by Atelier Aldo and a brooch with diamonds and emeralds by Mellerio.
This auction couldn't miss big brands such as Ferdinand Verger with an evening watch, Mauboussin with stunning diamond wares, René Boivin with an onyx brooch and, of course, the Fred brand with an emerald ring.
The catalog is superbly edited, and you'll also find wares from regulars such as David Webb - too much of him everywhere lately, Boucheron, Harry Winston, Chanel and Cartier.
A surprise, however, is the appearance of Lalaounis designs at the auction, there is even Georges Fouquet alongside works by Suzann Belperron, Charles Brooking and Grim. One could list endlessly, a must see this catalog!
Pictured here is a brooch with interchangeable enameled flowers in gold and diamonds by the venerable Boucheron brand, which with this nice touch tells us that autumn is coming.
Lorenz Bäumer
The scarab brooch from the summer collection was made of white gold, the central stone - a fire opal of extremely "vivid color" is the focal point of the design, to which perfectly matching beryls, tourmalines, diamonds and yellow sapphires were matched.
The entire collection, despite the fact that it is already several years old, is very impressive - the designer himself is famous for his bold and timeless designs, which go down in gold in the world of jewelry art.
Watching the works of such visionaries as Lorenz Bäumer, Cindy Chao and Wallace Chan, I believe that jewelry art can reach the mass imagination of almost everyone, which in the 21st century is unfortunately no longer so obvious, the younger generation of collectors and art enthusiasts today is betting on other luxury goods, jewelry and its great creators are receding into the background. I hope they will change just such projects. Have a successful go week!
Napoleon, mad with love for Maria Walewska, showered his lover with the most beautiful gifts he could buy, gossiped about all of Paris, Europe and the court at Versailles. This was one of the scandals that Empress Josephine hated the most, Maria Walewska was younger than her, more beautiful and, most tragically, madly in love with Napoleon.
What was the further fate of this scandalous relationship is probably known to everyone, I will only remind you that the couple's only son, Alexander Colonna-Walewski, spent his life first in Poland, then in France, where he rose to the position of foreign minister of the French Empire, and died in 1868 in Strasbourg.
The necklace from the photo was probably a gift from Napoleon to Marie, I write "probably" because only the initials of MW - the owner of the necklace - are preserved on the package. On the other hand, one can say with certainty that there was no other MW in Napoleon's life.
The necklace from the photo is an example of multifunctional jewelry, it was made by Lambert Vormus and consists of several elements - a bracelet, which can also be a necklace, several brooches, which when unscrewed can be a bracelet, and a diadem (the set includes 2 stands - for the bracelet and for the diadem). The whole set can be freely modified.
But the biggest impression is made by more than 96ct of perfectly beautiful diamonds, which, to enhance the effect, are cut and polished higher than other diamonds, so they catch more light and flicker like fireworks in candlelight, - as we know, the glow of fire is the only thing that ennobles diamonds and enhances their brilliance, artificial light only reflects this brilliance.
Finally, an interesting fact, Lambert Vormus prepared 3 such necklaces - 2 for Napoleon Bonaparte, who gave 1 to Josephine and 1 to Mary, and 1 necklace at the special request of King George III, who gave the necklace to his mistress - the infamous Lady Conyngham.
The upcoming auction of the collection belonging to the royal House of Württemberg is the most anticipated event of the year, the auction will take place on 6-7 November in Geneva.
More than 200 pieces of jewellery art will dazzle with their splendour, telling the turbulent history of a royal family that has played a significant role in international politics for hundreds of years. Current members of the family are related to almost all the reigning dynasties of Europe.
Among the exhibits on display, there will be an opportunity to bid on historical items - including jewellers such as Emil Biedermann and Wilhelm Haarstrick, whose works are quintessentially Viennese in style and court life.
Below is a set of 3 diamond brooches, styled after those worn by the Empress Sisi, the famous and most recognisable pieces of her jewellery.
The brooches are being sold at auction together with a special setting so that they can also be worn like a diadem.
Prior to the auction at Sotheby's, the jewels can be seen at a travelling exhibition in Frankfurt, Paris, London, Singapore, Taipei and Hong Kong.
Sotheby's November auction 🧐
The most exciting auction of the season is ahead of us, in November the auction house Sotheby's will start selling off the jewelry of the House of Württemberg.
Among the historic jewels, we will see pieces that tell the story of this remarkable family.
Today I'm presenting cufflinks in gold and emeralds, with diamonds that came from a gift from the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire Abdul Hamid II to King Ferdinand I of Bulgaria, while they came to the Württemberg family through the marriage of Nadezhda, daughter of Ferdinand I, to Prince Albrecht Eugene of Württemberg in 1924.
On Friday, we recommend our more detailed write-up about the auction.
Desa Unicum: Works of 19th and 20th century jewelry art.
Auction - September 20, 2023 19:00 - Warsaw.
Ahead of us is the first jewelry auction after the vacations prepared by the Warsaw auction house Desa Unicum.
I make no secret of the fact that it is with eager anticipation, because among the auctioned items a special place is given to jewelry from the interwar period.
The star of the auction, so to speak, will be a ring with a central diamond weighing 5.60 ct in Light Brown and VVS1 clarity, valued at 300 thousand zlotys.
The beautifully prepared auction catalog will also feature jewelry brands such as Cartier, with designs dating back to the 20th century, jewelry with black diamonds by Fozailoff Jewelry, and a jewelry watch by the distinguished Jaeger-LeCoultre brand.
Highly recommended! Link to the catalog in the comments.
Paul Flato
The first celebrity jeweler to make his designs famous through advertising - knowingly enlisting celebrities such as Greta Garbo, Mae West, Rita Hayworth, Joan Crawford, Doris Duke, Ginger Rogers, Carmen Miranda, Marlene Dietrich, Katharine Hepburn and Glorie Vanderbilt to promote him.
Born in 1900 to a family of American pioneers, his mother was a German immigrant, he grew up in Shiner, a town founded by his great-grandparents, pioneers in the Wild West, earlier German immigrants who bought Mexican land.
In New York, he opened his first jewelry store at One East 57th Street, on the corner of 5th Avenue in Manhattan, adjacent to Tiffany & Co.
He was famous for the panache with which he ran his showroom, employing talented designers such as David Webb, George W. Headley and Count Fulco di Verdura; legend has it that he was Harry Winston's biggest customer when the latter was exclusively a wholesaler.
In 1937, prosperity allowed him to open a second store on Sunset Boulevard in Beverly Hills, California, across from the legendary Trocadero nightclub.
Paul Flato introduced the fashion for jewelry with black enamel and initials adorned with jewels, and his Art Deco style jewelry still breaks records at auctions today, selling for dizzying sums. He became famous for his jewels, which great stars wore on screen playing their best roles.
Nothing lasts forever and in 1943 he was convicted of embezzling his clients' jewels, spending 16 months in the notorious Sing Sing prison.
As it turned out years later, it was not he who stole the jewelry, but his personal tailor, removing the jewelry from his jacket pocket.
Unfortunately, there are so many versions of the story that it is difficult to determine how it really was, while it is true that Flato had financial problems and failed to pay taxes, which eventually led him to bankruptcy.
The indictment and jail time ruined the famous jeweler's career, causing him to disappear from social life for good, opening a small jewelry store in 1970 in Mexico's fashionable Zona Rosa neighborhood, which he ran anonymously until 1990. He died surrounded by his family at the age of 99 in 1999, leaving behind 3 beautiful daughters Catharine Dennis, Barbara McCluer and Susan Flato.
Below is a brooch in the shape of a lemon hand - Flato was famous for his fascination with hands, which resulted in a whole series of hand designs with various jewels.
