Social-Emotional Intelligence for You & a Better World. A social psychologist and an emotional intelligence teacher explore the big topics of life.
Polarization is one of the topics that has drawn my attention, and the way it is portrayed in My Hero Academia has blown my mind.
Last season, we learned that a hero based society was not as perfect as we though, it also had violence and hypocrisy, but a bit more hidden. And I guess I've learned to accept that that's normal, that violence is kinda part of the human condition.
But learning to accept that, to go beyond the set of ideas that blind us and to figure out how to build a better society is exactly what Deku teaches us.
He invites us to see the shades of grey. To go beyond the hero-villain dichotomy. Maybe this can grant us the ability to build from a broader perspective.
P.s. if you haven't see My Hero Academia, prepare yourself for a beautiful emotional ride. Especially last season, which is the best I've seen in anime. 🥰
Today, after many months of absence, we are back to share more thoughts, ideas and stories.
These next weeks we will dive into anime culture with some topics related to friendship, dialogue, peace building, polarization, etc.
For now, we leave you with a reflection about one of my favorite friendships in anime: Gon and Killua's in Hunter x Hunter. Based of course, in the our great old friend Epicurus.
Since the start of this month and specially the 8th of March, we wanted to post something regarding the International Women's Day and the importance of feminism in the struggle towards gender equality.
We couldn't decide on a single explanation or way to describe the movement, theory and struggle behind this day.
That's what we decided to give the voice to some of our favorite women: Maya Angelou, Gloria Steinem, Audre Lorde, Roxane Gay, Comandanta Ramona, Laura Bates, Anna Sandoval, Marry Wollstonecraft and an anonymous quote written in Arabic.
Believing that there is not only one type of feminism, what does feminism mean to you?

After watching the story of Bill and Frank, we felt the need to share their love.
All pictures (except the one with WALL-E and Eve) belong to HBO and are from the series: TheLastOfUs

Lately I've been thinking that I was too worried on changing my surroundings, that I forgot to put my feet back to the ground and see reality as what it is.
And it's true. We are not always going to do well. People will hurt us sometimes and life and the world ain't gonna be easy.
These are not reasons too stop working to better ourselves and the world. But they are reasons to be more realistic, to accept our mistakes and recognize what we can and can't do.
And well, Albert Ellis, founder of Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy; explains this in simple word.
After some weeks of inactivity due to work and rest, we are back starting this year introducing one of our favorite terms and actions: Self-compassion.

This Sunday our dear .sarah is gonna give an amazing workshop about self compassion called: Self-Care Sunday.
Her compassion, intelligence, dedication, experience, sweetness and real life examples will definitely blow you away and touch your heart.
Go ahead to the link in her profile and register. It's 110% recommended.
These past weeks I decided to start Attack on Titan again. The first time I didn't get hooked and I wanted to give it a second try.
And wow, it didn't let me down; the complexity, the story, characters and ethical dilemmas. If you haven't watched it give it a try, it will be worth it.
For now, we leave a quote from Ymir, a woman that inspired Historia to take decisions for herself, stop people pleasing and choose her own path.
About a month ago Sarah and me took the decision to adopt a dog/daughter. It has been an amazing journey and she already sees us as part of her new family pack.
Having her in our lives has increased laughter, songs and funny voices in our home.
That's why today we wanted to share a bit some of the benefits (and also responsabilities) that can come with having a pet.
It seems that the world has become more polarized. We can see it in recent really tight election results and in our daily conversations. Sometimes we even censor ourselves with a group of people or prefer not to give our opinion to avoid a fight. In the end, conversation and dialogue seem to be the ones we are loosing.
With this quote by Sirius Black we want to raise awareness about the complexity of human kind and the huge shades of gray we all have. Perceiving ourselves as the good ones and others as bad will never get us anywhere.
Let's tap into kindness and curiosity. We can learn from both our shadow and light.
Today we share our thoughts regarding Positive Masculinities in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter.
Special mentions to Kingsley Shacklebolt for his wisdom and strength, Fred and George Weasley for the humor and rebellion, and Arthur Weasley for his care, support, passion and commitment to live his values.
A couple of weeks ago we finished watching The Rings of Power and we loved the character of Galadriel: strong, fierce and willing to recognize her shadows.
It seems like Tolkien's Middle Earth is the endless fight between good and evil. But what we love the most is that it shows us how we relate to power. Are we able to face it as a tool for serving others or serving ourselves?
Maybe by getting to know our shadows we can be more conscious with our decision, our power, our freedom.
Psychological Flexibility is key to develop resilience, mental health and a brother view of yourself and the world. If you wanna learn more check our post. Don't forget to like, comment, share and join the conversation.
Today we share a bit about November and the amazing organization/movement that started everything.

Let's promote and encourage Men's Mental Health through healthy conversations, emotional intelligence and mutual support.
We got so excited and moved with The Woman King, that we know share with you 8 reasons why you should watch it!
Viola Davis is a U.S. american actress and producer. She started acting in highschool and her first roles were in television series. Her acting career started growing when she won best supporting actress in the theater play King Hedley II in 2011. She received Oscar nominations because of her extraordinary performances in Doubt and The Help, and won an Oscar as best actress in Fences. She was also the first african american woman that won an Oscar, a Tony and a Emmy (in How to Get Away with Murder).
She grew up in a low income family and continuously mentions her experience as a young black woman and her dreams of becoming an actress. Today, she has also become an advocate for social justice and equality for women of color. Her various philanthropic actions include donations to her hometown public library and to the theater program of her former highschool. She has also collaborated in a project to eradicate childhood hunger in the U.S.
In an interview with Vanity Fair she mentioned that when she was young she didn't have a voice because she didn't feel worthy about having one. Today, she has become a symbol and voice of many.
If you haven't see her last performance in The Woman King, go for it. It's a clear omenage to her career and to the hability we all have to liberate ourselves from oppression.

It is really hard to listen without making things about us. It takes a lot of empathy, care and sometimes patience to just listen and be there.
I remember the first time I interviewed a patient during my bachelors in Psychology. After reviewing the video my teacher asked me: Do you think the problems of the other person are important? Because I saw you quiet bored.
Damn, that was a hard one to take. Now, after years listening to people, I'm still learning. And I remind myself that all problems are important and you should give them that space when they are shared.
Jean Milburn, from S*x Education, knows what we are talking about.

Maybe Comprehensive S*x Ed can give us some clues.

Our last post was about how the Jedi weren't that perfect, mainly because of their controlling emotions doctrine.
But everything has a light and a dark side. Obi-Wan preaches a against absolutes and dichotomy (watch the conversation before the battle with Anaking in Revenger of the Sith) and also reminds us that our points of view can change if we learn to step out of ourselves and try to see the world from from position of the other.
Yesterday was World Mental Health Day and we were quiet busy 😅. So today we want to share a little reflection of how important it is to relate with our emotions; cultivating emotional intelligence and compassion can lead to a better mental health. And well, we couldn't find a better metaphor than our wise, stoic and beloved Jedi.

is an amazing writer; quiet controversial, critical and with a focus on compassion and understanding (for yourself and others) that is wonderful. We started following her because of her critics towards Cancel Culture; and we continue learning so much from her zines, books, podcasts and posts.
Clementine, thank you for building a safe space for so many people and for all the criticism that invite us to grow, give each other the benefit of the doubt and literally stop being the cops of each other. You're amazing!

A brief phrase that invites us to connect with our human condition: we are capable of extreme kindness as well as horrible violence. That realistic point of view is the starting point of building imperfect peace.
P.s. We truly recommend you to read more about this concept defined by Francisco A. Muñoz.
Imperfect peace means but resolving present conflicts and building a peace culture. It also touches on our human imperfection and the facts that conflicts always happens. The way we deal with them makes the difference.
Svetlana Alexandrovna Alexievich is a Belarusian journalist, essayist and historian. She was awarded the 2015 Nobel Prize in Literature "for her polyphonic writings, a monument to suffering and courage in our time".
The Violence Triangle it's a concept that Johan Daltung defined as the sum of direct, structural and cultural violence.
Knowing makes us aware and awareness can generate change.
In the next weeks we will be sharing more about Daltungs peace theory.
And now, women and society are asking the important questions; we are mobilising and changing reality.
During the last days we've been following the death of Mahsa Amini, the protests in Iran and the terrible governmental response.
We've also been wondering how we can support the movement and join the cause. Today we present you a brief summary of the last days and 3 actions you can take to support the cause.
