2000kgs of food goes to waste every day only in Portugal, while some families still struggle to make ends meet and do not have access to nutritious and quality food. That’s something we need to change urgently and collectively. That’s why MamaFood has partnered up with the association ReFood, one of the main actors against food waste in Portugal. With 32 centers around the Greater Lisbon area, Refood] collects food surplus from local donors and redistributes ready-to-eat meals to the most vulnerable families of the community. So far, MamaFood has delivered 1000+ homemade meals to people in need in partnership with ReFood and thanks to your support!

“Hi! My name is Fatou and I’m very excited to share a part of my culture with you.🥰As a Senegalese, food is very important in my culture; it’s not just about eating, it’s also about sharing moments, as well as caring for others.🇸🇳 In Senegal, we would always prepare communal dishes for the whole family which we would share from the same platter. 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 For MamaFood, I share my dishes in individual portions but I always put some extra in case an unexpected guest shows up for dinner!❤️”

Couscous is a staple food throughout the Maghrebi cuisines of Algeria, Tunisia, Mauritania, Morocco, and Libya, and has recently entered the UNESCO's list of the World's Intangible Cultural Heritage.💛

The basis for couscous is... couscous! 😃This delicious stew simmers for hours to reveal all the aromas of its numerous ingredients; a mix of spices, a combination of seasonal vegetables, and different meatcuts and/or fish depending of the Maghrebin region it comes from. The name couscous is the same for the flavorful dish as for the ingredient it is based on; the durum wheat semolina (سميد in Tunisia), which becomes couscous (كسكسي) once it is steamed 10 times in a "couscoussier" - a traditional double-chambered food steamer used in Berber cuisine - and dried in the sun.

Luckily, the couscous we find today is already pre-cooked so we can enjoy a delicious couscous during rainy days in Lisbon!😋

"Hi! My name is Sahida and I come from Sherpur, a very small village in Bangladesh.🇧🇩 I moved to Lisbon in 2016 with my 3 children and husband because he got transferred here for work. I learned the beauty and aesthetics of food from my mother, which made my relationship with cooking even more meaningful.🥰 I often miss the flavours of home, so I started playing and experimenting with local products to recreate my favorite dishes. That's what I want to share with you; a bit of my home to yours.❤️"
