In Limen x Mariana Camacho b.camacho

Our collaborations: ‘This Is Not A Magritte Performance’ - Éditions #1 & #2

Meet Mariana Camacho, a creative force from Funchal, Madeira, born in 1993. Mariana's adventurous spirit fuels her passion for exploring a wide range of musical genres, always on the lookout for new and innovative ways to create. A playful approach and willingness to have fun are central to her musical process.

Mariana directs an LGBTI+ choir, is part of an improvisational trio with João Neves and Susana Nunes in Guarda-Rios, plays multiple instruments with the Beato group, and creates movements with Pulsar. Her creativity extends beyond music as she also creates soundscapes for theater and performs as an actor on occasion.

Since 2019, Mariana has made a name for herself in the national independent circuit with her solo project. Fearlessly fusing various musical influences and impressions of the world, Mariana defies rules and restrictions to create unique and boundary-breaking music.

Mariana's latest research explores traditional work songs, using them as a starting point to discover the voice's untapped potential as a living element. By embodying a place's spirit and reflecting its landscapes, Mariana unlocks the voice's weight and body, breathing new life into traditional songs and creating a distinctive sound that is entirely her own.

If you are in Lisbon these days, she will be performing live next Thurday March 16 from 7 pm

In Limen x Sara Rodrigues

Our collaboration: ‘This Is Not A Magritte Performance, Édition #2’. 🙌💙🙏

Sara Rodrigues is an interdisciplinary artist working in audiovisual composition, performance, installation, and more recently public intervention.

Her immersive research-led practice often materializes in context-specific and collaborative projects. Exploring the interconnectedness of humans with their ecosystems, both micro, and macro, the work envisions alternative forms of life-making, co-livability, and regeneration.

Since 2020, Sara has been working with Rodrigo B. Camacho as Landra; the name given to their land project and practice, paying tribute to acorns, called Landras in the Iberian Northwest. The duo sees in acorns a culture of autonomy, sovereignty, and auto-sufficiency that they aim to revive, aligning themselves with a practice of living and making in attunement with natural rhythms and cycles.

Soon to come some new news from In Limen - stay put!
But for now let’s have a little throwback in time with a few heart-warming testimonials from our audience.

The context: In the midst of the pandemic and in between lockdowns we were so grateful for the invitation from PADA Studios to show "This Is Not A Magritte Performance, Édition 2”.
We do love a one-of-a-kind location and it just so happens that PADA Studios are based at the heart of what used to be the largest industrial park of the Iberian Peninsula (no kidding).
This meant our stage was a decommissioned factory amongst others on a site once inhabited by thousands of workers.

Following our trademark format we proposed a 2-act experience to the audience:
act 1: art experience - this time an acoustic performance with a twist performed by .b.camacho and . Artistic direction with
act 2: conversation facilitated by our In Limen questions around the notions of work, post-industrial culture and freedom

At the end of the experience, we asked a few of our audience members: "how did you feel during the performance and how do you feel now?"
Check what they have to say in this video below, including the daughter of a former employee and a lady who got (really) transported by the performance.

So, we would like to say a massive thank you to all the fantastic humans who have been a part of “This is not a Magritte performance, Édition 2”: YOU aka the participating audience who always stand at the core of what we are creating.

Also soooo many thanks for the support we received for this performance from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, The Ministry of Culture of Portugal and 🙏 🙏 🙏

How to recount one of our "This Is Not A Magritte Performance" performances 👉 Dear friends, Read up 👇👇👇

Once upon a time, for the inauguration of its collective exhibition ‘O Que Não Temos Podemos Criar’,” PADA contacted to curate an original In Limen edition from our series "This Is Not A Magritte Performance".

Fast forward to the D-day and PICTURE this scene 👁👇
As you come in you are handed a mask and an envelope that you will open at the end of the performance.
You are then invited to sit and apply a facial mask on your eyes to keep for the 20-minutes duration of the first act.
We are in one of the warehouses of the former TINCO paint factory, one limb of the gigantic CUF organization - formerly the biggest industrial park of the Iberian Pen*sula culminating at its peak with a population of 10000 + factory workers.
Once everyone is seated with their eyes covered, one voice and another are emerging from some point in the space.
For the minutes ensuing Mariana Camacho .b.camacho and Sara Rodrigues continuously redefine the perimeter of the warehouse by pacing it with sound projections, singing, breath works and silences, the repeating of words in variations of tones creating de facto new abstract architectures.

You can hear them. You can feel them.

Whilst experimenting with producing differing sounds according to the position and movement of their bodies either walking, running, or standing still, they also lend their voices to evoke the memories of the people, the workers, that worked at CUF, by extension repopulating this empty shell of a space.

And then...to be continued 👋

What is IN LIMEN?

In Limen is a series of disruptive cross-disciplinary Art Happenings combining:

. Visual arts presented as site-specific installation
. Live performances (music and/or dance)
. Conversations with the People of the Audience which will follow the performance.

Each In Limen Art Happening is focusing on fundamental human questions at the intersection of Art, Philosophy and Science such as Memory, Intimacy, Consciousness, Death and Normality.

When Divisiveness seemingly prevails in Society
When unkind interactions are normalised
When hyper-connectedness is a fragile mask for greater social isolation

We want to recreate a sense of Belonging
We want to support the Art of Conversation
We want to nurture Authentic Interactions between people

In order to create that space,
We needed to explore topics that are intrinsic to our quest as human beings
No matter our gender, cultural, generational, social or other backgrounds.
