Circle Permaculture
Circle Permaculture runs Permaculture Design Courses (PDCs) in Southwest Portugal
At Circle Permaculture we form partnerships with organisations where earth and people come first, and act as catalysts for ecological education. Our niche is the communication of the design philosophy of permaculture, and the facilitation of courses that change peoples lives. Our function is simply to connect people who put permaculture into practice with others who want to learn how to care for earth, care for people and be economically profitable.
Have you ever grown your own food? It's an amazing feeling to know that you can (at least partially) sustain yourself and your family/ community with the produce you grow right in your own backyard. Plus, it's a great way to mitigate climate change and reduce your carbon footprint.
Our little girl has been having a blast playing in our garden and picking greens, which we've been using in our meals. It's heartwarming to see her so excited about the process. We're grateful for all the work that has been done with students and volunteers to make this garden the beautiful place it is!
Permaculture is a sustainable agriculture and design method that seeks to work with nature rather than against it. It's an excellent way to create a resilient and abundant food garden that also supports biodiversity.
We're thrilled to say that our 2-week permaculture design course will be starting on September 3! If you're interested in learning more about permaculture, homesteading, and creating a sustainable lifestyle, follow the link in our bio to join us. Let's take a step towards a better tomorrow!

A huge milestone for our land! After 2 years of preparation, building, earthworks, water management and establishment of energy systems, we hosted a 2-week permaculture design course! It was epic! Engaging class time was complimented by fun practicals in gardening, fermentation, forgaing, natural building, hot composting. Some fantastic final designs! Beautiful friendships are memories for a lifetime π We repeat September 4! Come join us for an awesome PDC! Link in bio
I was sitting in the dentist's chair earlier this week about to receive local anaesthetic and in my pre-extraction nervous state made small talk about the mushroom walk I had taken that morning. We found black trumpets, I said. The masked nurse's eyes widened with excitement. I'd found a fellow mycophile. A little later, with a wisdom tooth in my pocket and an ice pack on my cheek she told me that the black trumpet had eluded her. And so Angela and I became friends and today she came and hunted black trumpets with a small group. They were everywhere! Jackpot!
Another fantastic forage! The chanterelles really showing up! 4 varieties including the black trumpet pictured. Eggs from our chickens, bread from our oven and voila! A great meal! Cannot wait to forage more! Make hay while the sun shines, obtain a yield! Have an awesome end to 2022 friends πβ€οΈ
We keep goats. Why? Goats are incredible land cleaners. We are forbidden from 'cleaning' land for much of the year as the metal in the machine blades can spark against rocks and cause fires. The clearing is essential for fire prevention in our area. Goats can clear brambles all year round, they love it, and in return we receive multiple outputs from fertility to goat cuddles! Watching goats eat spiky brambles is quite a meditative pleasure. 2 of our 4 goats are large castrated males - perfect for goat carts - watch this space π€£. In permaculture we learn how to use biological resources π and respect the intrinsic qualities of animals within a regenerative system.
Another day another Agaricus campestris. Yum!
The last 2 years has been a rollercoaster ride! We have grown so much since early 2021 when we took on a farm in the SW Alentejo, Portugal. Making a home, starting a family, and watching a baby/ toddler interact with nature has been a profoundly beautiful experience. Our farm went through a 25 year process of abandonment, so we've cut through hectares of brambles, rebuilt structures, created beautiful gardens and planted dozens of trees. In April next year we are are so excited to restart with the Permaculture Design Certificate courses endorsed by the Permaculture Association UK, and to reunite a training team dedicated to sharing the knowledge of how to create sustainable human settlements, how to mitigate climate change and turn problems into solutions!
