Story of a proverb
In Levantine Arabic: اللي استحو ماتو or يلي استحو ماتو
In Egyptian Arabic اللي اختشو ماتو
An Arabic proverb used to refer to someone who commits an offense to modesty or decency, someone who commits a deed without shame.
Stories of proverbs are often inaccurate and change by time, but most of the stories regarding this proverb are almost identical (although they can differ from one country to another).
The story goes that during the times of Mamluks, women used to go to public baths (hammam) to socialize and have a bath, and in one of those hammams, a fire broke out and many women left the hammam with their clothes on and others were naked, while many other women stayed inside the hammam and preferred to die than to expose their naked bodies. Witnesses told the hammam owner that some women survived, and when he asked if someone died they told him اللي استحو ماتو (those who were ashamed died).
