"Self harming can be used for a variety of different psychological reasons. One of the more common reasons is that self harmers are notoriously poor at self soothing. When feeling tension or distress they don’t know how to deal with it like most people do. They never learnt how to do it in childhood and probably in the relationship with mother she never successfully soothed the emotional distress of the child when needed and that leads to two results
1. The child does not learn how to self soothe
2. The child does not know what the experience of being soothed feels like so later in adulthood when they are meant to be able to self soothe they don’t know what they are looking for.
Some people discover that if you assault the body that can lead to a soothing of distressing emotions. They discover that it is a way to self soothe when one is feeling particularly bad.
Of course there are a variety of ways a person can self harm
cutting, burning, hitting, biting, pinching and wound interference.
A recent newspaper article provided perhaps insight into another form of self harm. Placing the body in extremely cold temperatures. What she says in the article is she found this would soothe her distressing emotions."
