TRADITIONAL CYPRIOT ARCHITECTURE (Blog post).
Traditional Cypriot architecture is a reflection of the island's rich cultural heritage and the diverse influences that have shaped it over centuries. Cyprus has been inhabited by various civilizations throughout its history, including the Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Venetians, Ottomans, and British, and each has left a mark on the island's architecture.

One of the defining features of traditional Cypriot architecture is the use of local materials, such as stone, mud, and timber. Stone is especially prominent in many buildings, including houses, churches, and fortifications, and gives them a distinctive and rugged appearance. Mud bricks were also commonly used for walls, often covered with whitewash to protect them from the sun.

Another characteristic of traditional Cypriot architecture is the use of courtyards, which were central to the design of many buildings, especially houses. These courtyards were often surrounded by a covered veranda or balcony and provided shade and a cool retreat during the hot summers.

The arch is another prominent feature of traditional Cypriot architecture, and it can be found in many buildings, including churches and houses. The use of arches is a testament to the influence of Byzantine architecture, which used them extensively.

Traditional Cypriot houses were typically built around a central living area, with rooms arranged around it. The living area, known as the kafeneion, was used for socializing, eating, and sleeping, and often had a large fireplace for heating and cooking.

Many traditional Cypriot houses also featured intricate wooden balconies, known as mashrabiyas, which were used for privacy and to keep out the sun while still allowing for air circulation. These balconies were often decorated with carvings and geometric patterns, adding to the beauty of the buildings.
