“It’s astounding that you all have been able to train thousands of officers and it’s such important life-saving work. I want to congratulate you on that work and going well above your goal,” said Marissa J. Polnerow, Deputy Public Affairs Officer at the U.S. Embassy Kigali, Rwanda
Our President Dr. Innocent Nzeyimana explained that the project prioritized police officers “because they are almost always the first to arrive at the scene of road crashes or even other incidences such as fires.
“These skills are invaluable, as they enable officers to provide immediate assistance themselves and guide others on how to appropriately help the victims
He also expressed gratitude to the partners such as the U.S. Embassy Kigali, Rwanda for their support and the Rwanda National Police for their interest and commitment which led to the training of nine times more officers than initially planned.

Today, in collaboration with the University of Rwanda, we hosted a public lecture that discussed with students mostly from the mechanical engineering department, helmet standards, testing, and head injury prevention. Presentations highlighted the gruesome effects of head injuries, including traumatic brain injury (TBI), a disruption of normal brain function caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head which usually occurs in motorcycle accidents.

Following the successful installation of Rwanda’s first helmet-testing lab Abimana Fidele, the Permanent Secretary in Rwanda Ministry of Infrastructure visited the facility and officially kicked off a five-day training on helmet testing and standards
He emphasized that while helmet compliance in is nearly 100%, helmets sold in the country are not required to meet any safety standards, leading to high traffic fatalities to which motorcyclists contribute 21%.
“I believe that this project will bring a considerable reduction in head injuries and deaths resulting from motorcycle accidents by leading exclusively to the use of motorcycle helmets complying with standards,” he stated
HPR President Dr. Innocent Nzeyimana noted: With this lab, we can now test helmets imported into Rwanda and, in the future, those manufactured locally. This represents a significant advancement in motorcycle safety in Rwanda and provides a valuable resource for academic research and innovation.

Exciting news! This week, we celebrate the arrival and installation of Rwanda's very first helmet-testing machine! This milestone represents a significant step forward in the efforts to enforce safety standards, promote safe helmet use, and reduce the serious head injuries that contribute to high mortality rates in motorcycle transport. A huge thank you to FIA Foundation for their invaluable support in making this possible!
Next week will be marked by training of key staff and academic personnel in the use of that machine. Dr Terry Smith, a renowned helmet expert and biomechanical engineer is in the Country for that purpose.

This week, our President INNOCENT NZEYIMANA N. participated in the 15th World Conference on Injury Prevention & Safety Promotion in .
He presented two crucial studies that explored helmet usage among moto-taxi drivers in and their passengers, the quality of helmets in use as well as knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors of moto-taxi drivers regarding helmet quality and cost.
Key highlights from the studies include that 13.6% of passengers put on their helmets after the motorcycle had already started moving, 30% don’t fasten their helmets, 8% just lay it over the head especially females who prioritize their hairstyles over safety.
At the conference, he also had the opportunity to meet with other members of the Global Alliance of NGOs for Road Safety, of which is part.
