Indeed, we are living in tumultuous times. As we attempt to protect ourselves, and our families, I want to make sure you understand the difference between the options we have WHILE keeping toxins out of your home!

UNDERSTANDING THE DIFFERENCES

TIER 1: C L E A N E R S
A cleaner refers to the removal of germs, dirt, and impurities from surfaces. A cleaner does NOT claim to kill germs. But by removing them, it lowers their numbers, and therefore, lowers the risk of spreading infection.

TIER 2: S A N I T I Z E R S
This category refers to using chemicals on a surface to reduce bacteria by at least 99.9%

TIER 3: D I S I N F E C T A N T
A disinfectant refers to using chemicals on a surface to kill germs. This process does not clean dirty surfaces or remove germs. But by killing germs on a surface AFTER cleaning it, disinfectant further lowers the risk of spreading infection.

PROPER USE:
Clean surfaces before disinfecting! When disinfecting, leave the solution on the surface for at least 10 minutes before wiping away.
Use the proper dilution ratio.

REVIEWING THE OPTIONS:

S A N I T I Z E R
This category will require the base alcohol to be at least 60-95% alcohol concentration.
Vodka, is 40% (80 proof)
Everclear is between 60-95% (120-190 proof)
The alcohol %, is half the proof.

D I S I N F E C T A N T
Hydrogen peroxide is considered an environmentally safe alternative to chlorine based bleaches, as it breaks down into water and oxygen. Commercially available 3% hydrogen peroxide is considered a stable and effective disinfectant by the CDC when used on inanimate objects.
Hydrogen peroxide has been used as an antiseptic since the 1920's. It kills bacteria by destroying their cell walls, in a process called oxidation.
Hydrogen peroxide is active against a wide range of the micro-organisms, including bacteria, yeasts, fungi, viruses, and spores ( CDC reference 78, 654). A 0.5% accelerated hydrogen peroxide demonstrated bacterial and virucidal activity in one minute and mycobactericidal and fungicidal activity in 5 minutes (CDC reference 656).
Hydrogen peroxide works by producing destructive hydroxyl free radicals that can attack membrane lipids, DNA, and other essential cell components. Catalase, produced by aerobic organisms and facultative anaerobes that possess cytochrome systems, can protect cells from metabolically produced hydrogen peroxide by degrading hydrogen peroxide to water and oxygen. This defense is overwhelmed by the concentrations used for disinfection (CDC reference 653, 654)
When used as a surface disinfectant, it is ideal to let the solution sit on the surface for at least 10 minutes at room temperature.

C L E A N S E R
While the CDC and EPA has stated a simple water and soap solution is sufficient to clean dirt and debris from surfaces, I like to enhance my surface cleaner with Thieves Household Cleaner for added benefits of aroma and binding dirt particles and impurities.

DIY
SURFACE SPRAY DISINFECTANT
7 ounces Hydrogen Peroxide
1 ounce Thieves Household Cleaner
10-20 drops lemon essential oil*
(or oils of your choice)

Combine in 8 ounce spray bottle. Clean the surface.
The spray disinfectant and let sit at least 10 minutes before wiping**
*because cleaning should smell good, and make you happy
