Argentina has raised its interest rate by 6.75 percentage points — its third steep rate hike in less than a week — in an increasingly desperate attempt to halt the country’s peso from sliding further against the dollar. The central bank raised its key interest rate to a record high of 40 per cent, its press office said on Friday. The move comes less than 24 hours after the bank lifted them by 3 percentage points to 33.25 per cent and takes the country’s borrowing costs from 27.25 to 40 per cent in the space of just seven days. The latest move underscores the officials’ concerns over the intensifying pressure on peso, which has fallen more than 5 per cent since last Friday despite $5bn of central bank intervention to prop up the currency and the two rate hikes. “As well as using interest rates, the BCRA will continue operating with all its tools for intervention in the foreign exchange markets,” the central bank said in a statement on Friday morning. The move was aimed at “avoiding disruptive behaviour” in the markets, as well as “guaranteeing the disinflation process”, the bank said, adding that it stands at the ready to act again if necessary in order to reach its inflation target of 15 per cent for 2018. The peso opened modestly higher on Friday, coming off yesterday’s record low of 22.39 to trade 0.5 per cent higher at 22.25 per dollar. The country’s 100-year bond also reversed its earlier losses to trade at 85.88 on the dollar. It had slipped to a new low of 83.31 on the dollar prior to the rate move. Nicolas Dujovne, the Argentine treasury minister, announced in a press conference on Friday that the government would reduce its target for reducing the primary fiscal deficit for 2018 from 3.2 per cent to 2.7 per cent. “The convergence of fiscal equilibrium is not negotiable,” he said. Mr Dujovne said cutting the target would mean that the government would need to borrow $3bn less this year. With some 75 per cent of Argentina’s financing needs already covered this year, that figure would rise to 80-85 per cent due to the change in the target, according to Luis Caputo, the finance minister.
