Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah has approved the largest ever expansion of the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah. He also ordered to start implementing the massive expansion project at once so as to complete it within a maximum period of two years. With the new expansion, the mosque will have the capacity to accommodate more than 1.6 million worshippers. Islam’s two holy mosques are currently witnessing the largest ever expansion in their history. After launching the massive expansion work of the Grand Mosque in Makkah in 2011, King Abdullah laid corner stone for the expansion of the Prophet’s Mosque during his visit to the holy city on Sept. 24, 2012. Once the expansion is completed, the mosque will have a total area of 1.1 million square meters with the capacity to accommodate over 1.6 million worshippers. The expansion is being made as part of a comprehensive plan that also encompasses the development of the central Haram area and underdeveloped neighborhoods.

Jamarat Bridge 2-جسر الجمرات 2 25/10/2013

The new Jamarat Bridge is the only special-purpose structure of its kind in the world dedicated exclusively to serve millions of pilgrims once a year as part of their pilgrimage rite. The bridge is 950 meters long and 80 meters wide. It consists of five floors each of which is 12 meters high. The entire project is designed to hold 12 stories and as many as five million pilgrims in the future if the need arises. About 8,000 employees from the Saudi Binladin Group, which won the SR4.2 billion contract, worked around the clock in order to complete the project in time. The new Jamrat Bridge is designed to hold 250,000 pilgrims an hour. Construction: 2006-2010 Facilities: - 5-Level bridge above ground with total area of 385,000 m2. - 1 Underground level for services with area of 21,000 m2, and 2-tunnel connections to surrounding area with total length of 3,000 m. - 6 Service buildings with total area of 25,000 m2. - 2 Heliports. - 6 Five-ton elevators. - 11 Escalators housed in buildings with total area of 70,000 m2. - 2 Bus stations with total area of 37,000 m2. - Site preparation involving 2 million m3 of rock cut and other works. A number of side projects have also been completed including the re-organization of the Jamarat Bridge facilitating access in six directions, three on the south and three on the north. The project will help to organize and allocate appropriate places for services, such as food stores, barbers shops, and toilets, and areas for medical and emergency services, civil defense forces and public security. The ground and first level will be for pilgrims coming in from east Mena while the second level, will be for pilgrims coming from the Makkah side. The third will be for those entering from north Mena, and the fourth level will be designated for use by pilgrims entering from south Makkah, along King Abdul Aziz Road. There are 90 cameras around Jamrat to monitor the movement of pilgrims and prevent possible stampedes. These cameras will also enable Hajj managers to assess how many pilgrims each floor of the bridge can hold. The project also includes three tunnels and covers other construction work with the possibility of future development. The project provides 11 entrances and 12 exits in all four directions. It has a helipad for facilitating the landing of helicopters in an emergency. The Jamarat project also includes an air-conditioning system backed by water sprinklers that can reduce the temperature to about 29 degrees centigrade. The ambulances will be able to access both floors of the structure. The Jamarat Bridge also includes subways for underground vehicular traffic to provide more space for pedestrians in the bridge. The oval design of the pebbles basins and the three 40-meter-high pillars have improved the flow of pilgrims and increased the capacity of the bridge, which has helped to reduce congestion while pilgrims are performing the stoning ritual. Another feature is that those entering a floor will have to follow a one-way route. This also helps prevent crowding. Background: There have been many accidents in Mina during the Hajj, mostly due to stampedes at Jamarat. In 2004, 250 pilgrims were crushed to death at Jamarat bridge. A decade earlier, 270 were killed in a similar stampede. The new bridge was planned after the 2006 tragedy, when 360 pilgrims lost their lives in a stampede on the bridge, during the stoning ritual on the last day of the Hajj.
