Berkeley’s Pacific Steel Casting to close after 83 years in business

Pacific Steel Casting, which at its peak was a family-owned firm that employed 600 people, is closing permanently. The foundry is owned by Genger family for four generations and has been in business since 1934. At one time, it was one of the largest independent steel casting companies in the U.S. The foundries were among the last surviving manufacturers in West Berkeley, once the city’s manufacturing district.

Meanwhile, about 70 workers are still on the payroll at Pacific Steel, which is located at 1333 Second St. in West Berkeley, California. A number of forces were a main reasons for the plant's closure, including competition from cheaper labor markets like India and China, strict environmental regulations, and an immigration audit that hit the factory hard six years ago.

In 2011, the federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency audited the plant and found many of its workers were undocumented immigrants. The company was forced to lay off about 200 workers as a result.

Afterward, the layoffs damaged the factory's productivity because they lost about one-third of their workforce.

Then in January 2014, the company was forced to settle a lawsuit alleging that employees had been cheated of pay. It cost Pacific Steel about $4.5 million. The plant has also faced environmental complaints from Berkeley residents.

Facing mounting losses, in March 2014, Pacific Steel Casting filed for bankruptcy protection. The company only emerged from bankruptcy by being put up for auction.

Speyside Equity bought Pacific Steel for $11.4 million in July of that year.

Two parts delivered to SWCC for Centrifugal Pump made from Duplex Stainless Steel. Duplex SS is well known for its powerful characteristic against stress, corrosion and cracking; however, it needs high skilled stuff in metallurgy science to make it in perfect quality.

The main uses for this type of materials usually located nearby offshore in oil and gas production.

This jaw plate is a repeated order for one of our customer located in Majarda area. The client mentioned that they are very much satisfied with quality and lifespan; So, they are ordering this item from us regularly.

The Jew plate is weighted about 1400 Kgs and made from manganese steel. We had to use the butterfly technique in order to make it.

We are excited to deliver a repeated order of cooler plates to cement plant.

We just delivered vertical housing for centrifugal pump. This part has the ability to stand against corrosion and high heat up to 760 °C.

Recently, we casted two big jaw plates composed of manganese with total weight over 2000 kg for each. The product consist of three parts the jaw plate, center lock and top lock.

Recently, we've supplied one Vane Guide for storm water pump to Yanbu refinery.
It was made on rush bases as the customer needs it very urgently. We were able to supply them this item within 30 days with all the required inspections and It was accepted by client's inspector without any remarks.

Now it is installed and running successfully in Yanbu refinery.

One of our biggest challenges was casting discharge head that weighted about 2200 kg.The item has very critical machining areas as it is a part of assembly. The centers has to be aligned and the bolt holes shall be off centered. All the dimensions shall be within the tolerance range.
