June 12 is the day my home country the Philippines celebrate infependence day or Araw ng Kalayaan!

We used to have July 4 as our Independence day because the Americans wanted it to coincide with their own Independence day.
However, on May 12, 1962, our President Diosdado Macapagal declared June 12 as very our own Independence Day ”... in commemoration of our people’s declaration of their inherent and inalienable right to freedom and independence.”

I couldn’t believe the turn out of people that attended our ”Arts, poetry & sweets” exhibit last April 20,2024 during Stockholm Kulturnatt (Culture Night). I can confidently say it was a success!

In summer, the front garden of our house turns fuscia from the sea of Purpurklätt or rose campion flowers. It started with 2 plants which I planted 7 years ago when we just moved to Sweden.
My husband just loves having his weekend morning coffee or fika on the steps surrounded by all the flowers. He says it gives him a pause & reinvigorates him for the coming week.
Now a days we hear the word ”pause” a lot. I wish we can cure all the ails of the world with a field of flowers !

Banksy’s graffiti are so powerful. It just proves how art can provoke, question, comment on society. Art can be society’s conscience.
Currently, the exhibition Banksy a mysterious mind is running at Stadsgårdsterminalen in Stockholm (very close to Slussen). It is a highly recommended exhibit!

Finally, I got to see ”The Spoliarium” by Juan Luna!
This 4m x 7m spectacular painting is a pride & joy of the Philippines.
This painting was made at a time when the Filipinos were struggling to be recognized as equal by its colonizer Spain.

”The Spoliarium is a painting by Filipino painter Juan Luna. Luna, working on canvas, spent eight months completing the painting which depicts dying gladiators. The painting was submitted by Luna to the Exposición Nacional de Bellas Artes in 1884 in Madrid, where it garnered the first gold medal. Wikipedia

This is the Uppsala Domkyrka. It’s a beautiful old church that was once a Catholic church until in 1527 King Gustav Vasa decided that Sweden should be Protestant/Lutheran instead.

I got invited by my friend to a CFHILL gallery exhibit last Thursday, March 30.
Included in the exhibit were the excellent canvases of the Ethiopian artist , profound sculptures & paintings of , some watercolors of the well known Swedish children’s book author & illustrator Elsa Beskow, & many more from other artists.
I love going to galleries & I am happy to be part of the or FAAS, where I have found friends with the same interests ❤️❤️❤️.

What luck that I finished this piece today on International women’s day!

I titled this painting
”Pinay” which is our colloquial term for a Filipino woman. We call a Filipino man ”Pinoy”.
The painting depicts a Filipina/Pinay, dressed in a modernized ”terno” gown, standing proudly on a rice field or ”palayan” that surrounds the beautiful Mayon Volcano. On her hand rests calmly a colorful Philippine Trogon which might be what the legendary & magical ”Ibong Adarna” looked like.

The Mayon volcano is an active volcano & is known for its almost perfect cone. In 1814, the Mayon Volcano had a huge eruption and almost completely burried the Cagsawa Church. Only the church’s tower remains visible today.

Legend has it that the beautiful Mayon Volcano with its perfect cone, rose up as a symbol of the undying love between the beautiful maiden Magayon & the warrior Pangaronon. However, another man, also a warrior named Pagtuga did not make life easy for these 2 lovers. He wanted Magayon for himself even if she detested him!

A very good Hong Kong friend of mine informed me about this amazing news and it started a conversation. This painting is a result of that conversation. I titled the painting “Hello Hong Kong 2023!”

I lived in Hong Kong for 23 years. I practically matured in Hong Kong. I worked as an architect there. I met my husband & had my son in Hong Kong. Hong Kong will always be special in my heart & I know to everyone else who has spent years living there. I can just smell the dimsum & chow fan as I write this 😂
My painting depicts random images of what to do in Hong Kong. They have 2 new museums both of which I have not been to yet. They are the Hong Kong Palace Museum & the M+ museum.
Did you know Hong Kong is also an excellent place to go hiking? It has many hiking trails! And of course you have shopping, FOOD! ( dim sum, egg tarts, pearl tea, iced lemon tea, pineapple buns, curry fishballs…), the city skyline, Hong Kong Disneyland, the HK Zhuhai Macau bridge which is the longest sea crossing bridge in the world, and many more. It is definitely a great, interesting place to visit!
