Happy team introduction day! In today's introduction, we present to you Johan Knutsson, our Senior Platform Developer who is working on Ringtail Technology. Please join us in giving him a warm welcome! 👏

1. What is your position in Ringtail Games and where do you come from?

I'm a Senior Platform Developer at Ringtail Technology, originally from Sweden.

2. What are your hobbies?

I enjoy nature, be it camping, hiking or just a small stroll, I find that nature always helps me recharge my batteries. I'm also a big book lover, mainly sci-fi and fantasy but can pick up almost any kind of book that interests me. Games have always been a part of my life as well (everything from boardgames, card games and video games) but at its core it has been about socializing with people. Other than that a lot of my free time is spent playing with/parenting my two kids!

3. One fun fact about you!

I love solving problems, be it in my private life or at work, and have found it has helped me learn a lot of new things. I recently for example learned a lot about how car batteries are described when ours needed replacing.

Why is game design important? In today's dev dairy, Lead Game Designer Steven Martin, at Ringtail Games shares with us his 4 key takeaways when working on mobile game design and on what makes them stick.

1. How do you start your thought process when it comes to designing mobile games?

"First thing is thinking about how is this game going to delight our players. Why do we think it’s fun and compelling? What new experiences can we provide that other products haven’t? Once that’s nailed down, I'll move on to what their second-to-second gameplay experience feels like and then onto more meta considerations like the short and long term goals they’ll set for themselves; what would they want to achieve each play session, each day and each week."

2. Could you share with us some key elements when it comes to balancing a game?

"You need to make sure you mix things up. Balance some aspects to be easy to achieve quickly while others take longer. Try to ebb and flow the difficulties players will encounter so it feels more natural and the challenges less predictable. This will lead to a more engaging and less predictable experience."

3. Do you have to understand the psychology of the player to make a good mobile game?

"As a game designer my ultimate goal is to make a game that our players can’t help but become huge fans of. A powerful tool to do this is to be able to understand and empathize with the emotions your game may be evoking. So understanding psychology can certainly help!"

4. Name some of your favourite mobile games and tell us what makes them fun or great?

"I have too many to list! One I’m really enjoying right now is Clash Mini. Each match feels like the right amount of luck, skill and power. I have clear daily goals and I can usually feel like I was productive at the end of my session. It’s a good recipe for getting me to want to return each day."

We thought it would be a good idea to show you a concept art of the chipmunk feeder that worked on awhile back. It's such a cute and fun design, and the animated version looks great in the game!

We asked Maddison Jones what's her experience like from working in the Harveston art team and also which is the most gratifying part of her job.

“I have been a part of Ringtail games for over three and a half years. It is my first in- house studio job and looking back to when I started, I realise how little confidence I had as an artist and a professional. Working with such a great team and having assisted in the visual direction Harveston took as it evolved, my confidence greatly improved as an artist and a developer. I have learnt so much and I am so thankful I got to 'grow up' along with this studio!

One of the most gratifying things about my job is working with an awesome group of people. Our company culture is so inclusive, open and collaborative. There are no egos, and everyone's opinion is valued. It makes for a very happy, collaborative and creative process that produces quality work! We are a close-knit team which allows for a very supportive and comfortable work environment!”

As the August warmth starts fading away, the annual summer party was held this week. It’s also the first time in a long while that the whole team at Ringtail Interactive is reunited!

Each year, the company throws a summer pool party for staff to enjoy the sun (anything else we can get, really) and have fun. The weather wasn’t in our favour, but the party was still pretty much a BIG success! There was some pool action at the very end for those who were brave enough to venture in 10 degrees water.

Looking forward to our next team get-together!

20/08/2021

We chatted with Björn Andersson to find out what it's like joining Ringtail Games as an intern in the beginning, and how the company have helped with his career path and growth.

"When I first joined Ringtail Games as an intern, I quickly realized that the programming I had done up until that point was nothing compared to what was still left to learn. Seeing the level of the code in the project was overwhelming, but also inspiring and motivating as I saw in Ringtail the potential for me to learn and grow immensely as a programmer and developer.

Luckily, with the help of amazing colleagues and a lot of determination, Ringtail has helped me do exactly that, and I can now look back and feel incredibly proud of how far I’ve come since I first joined the team!"

Any advice for developers who are looking to join the mobile game industry?

"A passion for game development, an eagerness to learn and the ability to work within a team. No matter your level of experience, these skills will get you far!"

04/08/2021

We are thrilled to have Maciej Godzina joining the team!
Help us in giving the warmest welcome to our new Junior UX/UI Designer. 👍

Here's a short introduction from Maciej:

1. What is your position in Ringtail Games and where do you come from?

I've been working for Ringtail Games in this Junior UI/UX position for over two months now. I come from Tarnobrzeg, a city in southeastern Poland. My background comes from various multimedia design fields like Video and Animation production for social media and DTP.

2. What are your hobbies?

Playing games, working on my personal projects and also trying hard to work out a lot. I must add on that I’m a huge enthusiast of BMX bikes and Fingerboarding.

3. One fun fact about you!

I'm also very into mechanical keyboards and gaming mice communities, especially like collecting and modifying them all. So after few years of this hobby, I ended up with a collection of over 40 high-end gaming mices (still growing) which are probably worth more than the car I own.

We are so excited to have you onboard! A big welcome to the team ✨

08/07/2021

It's finally here! The team has been hard at work and Harveston 5.0 is now live on Appstore and Google Play store. Chock-full with new content - the newly released 5.0 update comes a huge feature overhaul, new characters, new music, and new areas to unlock!

We asked Timo Putaala on his experience working in the QA team and which is the most gratifying part of his job.

"Working with QA for me is very fulfilling, everyday is different and I love how versatile it can get. My responsibility includes to continuously test the game during development phase to make sure the game maintains a good quality product free from bugs or flaws. The most exciting day for me is when we have a big release day, that's the day all of our new features will be displayed and it's always fun to see the response from the player base what they think about the game."

Summer weather is here in Stockholm ☀️

Xabier Gonzalez Goienetxea, Game Developer at Ringtail Games shares with us his experience as a developer working on a mobile game:

“Working in this industry has been uplifting for me. Being able to create experiences for people and to see their positive reaction online is priceless. Here at Ringtail Games, I have the opportunity to work with very talented and professional people which gives me the chance to grow as a game developer. Adding to that, there is a fun atmosphere in the team, making it awesome to work with everyone and hang out with.”

26/05/2021

We had a talk with Maria Ana Brito, BI Developer to find out what is her job all about, and how Ringtail Games supported her on working remotely.

"I work in Business Intelligence, so all data that comes from our game goes through me. Part of my job involves analysing and transforming data into useful information, as well as presenting it to the stakeholders. Working remotely for a long period hasn't been a challenge for me at all, because the team maintains a constant flow of communication and everyone makes an effort to create a collaborative working environment.

The company has ensured that all team members have all the essentials in order to promote a comfortable WFH experience, ranging from equipment we might be missing to flexible work hours, which is a great help in this pandemic time we’re living in."

19/05/2021

In his own words, Vincent van de Pol, Senior Game Developer, tells us why working at Ringtail Games is such a breeze:

“The best thing about working at Ringtail Games over the past 4 years are the people. We're all friends - we joke around, play games together, and meet up outside of work.

The company prioritises a healthy work culture for long-term sustainability, and if you have a personal issue, the company will go out of its way to help you. That makes it incredibly easy going to work every day.”

Featuring our Concept Artist, Sofia Lantz Barzi on 4 steps to generate great ideas for a concept from scratch to finish:

1. Brainstorming & research
I will usually begin the process by thinking: “What is the general idea and concept?”. Also what the functionality of this asset will need to have in order to be performing its job? Then going into detail and making those functions readable from the player’s perspective is next.

2. Experimenting with sketches
It is vital that the idea is "universally" readable and recognisable as a prop. If it's a character sketch, then his/her personality can be seen from facial expressions and clothing style. Another thing is making sure that the concept is set in the same visual style as the rest of the game world.

3. Picking out colours
Colour-blocking is done to make sure that the colour scheme is matching the other visuals in the game, and for it to both look good and be readable in the game.

4. Polishing & final tweaks
In between these steps, there’ll be lots of back and forth check-ins with the art director and fellow artists to ensure the concept heads in the right direction. Critique and feedback is SO important! This entire process takes a different amount of time and effort each time, depending on the complexity of the concept or character design.

All of us at Ringtail Games are avid animal lovers and almost everyone in the team has got either a cat or a dog. Having a furry best friend has helped reduce stress in our lives and provided us with support when times got tough.

Say a big hello to our work-from-home companions!

28/04/2021

Kajsa Lundqvist, 3D Animator, tells us why working at Ringtail Games is not only just a job to her - but something that she looks forward to every single day.

"I love having a job where I feel like I can really have an impact on the product, and that my opinions are heard and considered.

But the best thing with Ringtail Games is the people, to work with a team that is reliable, dedicated and of course super fun to hang out with!"

26/04/2021

Team lunch! Last weekend, some of the Ringtail devs met up to enjoy the sunshine at Skinnarviksberget, and had a covid-friendly picnic together.

Here's hoping for more sunny and warm days to come in Stockholm! ☀️

Julia Weber, our QA Lead and Sound Manager, is happy to share what exactly makes her excited about working at Ringtail Games.

“I enjoy working with people that want to create something to be proud of and I feel this is shared with the rest of the team. At Ringtail, every person’s opinion matters and there’s a good mix of structure and openness.

We face challenges and successes together and my days here are diverse and engaging. The company allows me to grow, both individually and professionally, and our values are shared with management and employees alike. This, together with the games we make, is what I like the most working at Ringtail."
