Var inte rädd för mörkret,
ty ljuset vilar där.
Vi ser ju inga stjärnor,
där intet mörker är.
I ljusa irisringen,
du bär en mörk pupill.
Ty mörkt är allt som ljuset,
med bävan längtar till.
Var inte rädd för mörkret,
ty ljuset vilar där.
Var inte rädd för mörkret,
som ljusets hjärta bär.

Interview with Dust Mechanics for the release of Hexagon 22.02.22.
Background
The first time I can remember listening to electronic music was when I was 5-6 years old, headbanging to Around the World by Daft Punk in my mom’s white Ford Sierra. I had no idea what it was but when I heard the track years later, I immediately got thrown back to that car ride on a sunny Gothenburg spring day. The hypnotic repetitiveness in electronic music, house and techno, still mesmerizes me, confuses me and gives me energy. From Daft Punk and onwards I explored more and more and got deeper and deeper into the the world of house, techno, disco and other forms of dance music. Another complete game changer was when I discovered the world of dub and dub techno in general and Basic Channel in particular. The rawness, slowly moving changes, sometimes weird rhythms and ”dry space” still knocks me out every time. Their approach to soundscape design is astounding. Besides from electronic music I have listened to and played psychedelic rock, blues, soul, funk, American and French jazz as well as Scandinavian folk for as long as I can remember. Actually, since recently I’ve started to join in on blues/soul/jazz jams in cellars around Stockholm playing the guitar. What unites these music forms with the type of electronic music I like, to me, is the repetitiveness, harmony, rawness and granular changes over time. I mean, have a listen to old The Meters albums and tell me that’s not raw and beautiful!
Creative process
The process behind this album is somewhat difficult to explain. Most likely because there never was a process nor an idea of releasing these tracks in the form of an album. Some recordings are up to nine years old now I think. The latest are perhaps two years old. I usually spend the most time focusing on one sound over a very basic rhythm pattern. Sometimes just on an echoed snare. Then hours could be spent on tweaking and just listening to that one sound. After a while I record maybe 15-20 minutes of it, choose the best segment and build the rest of the track around that sound. Sometimes the original loop doesn’t make the cut and gets abandoned. In terms of inspiration, it can come from anywhere really. Nature, club nights, friends, Ravi Shankar, subway escalator rhythm, the ocean, and sometimes the total lack of inspiration. The empty canvas is terrifying and inspiring. I believe the bleak sound on some of the tracks has a direct correlation with my mom’s passing when I was seven years old. Music has always been, and always will be, a way for me to handle bad times. But mostly good times. Since the tracks are recorded over such a long period, the gear has changed considerably over time. What is common to all of them though is that they are recorded and arranged in Ableton Live 9 using a somewhat crappy RME Babyface. The glitching USB cable drives me crazy. Most of the tracks, maybe all of them actually, have at least one element of my eurorack modular system. When I got into modular I promised myself not to exceed the 104hp 6U case I got then. Happy to say, I’ve kept that promise, otherwise I would have been financially ruined by now. If I get something new, something old has to go. For those interested I’ve basically split up my eurorack into two sides, one side additive synthesis buchla-style, while the other half is based on Moog-style subtractive synthesis. Many of the pads and keys are a Juno 106 which is just almast a perfect polysynth to me. The Jomox 999 is the mostly used drum machine on this album. It’s far from a perfect drum machine but it has a certain rawness to it. Also, that sequencer is just amazing so on many tracks I use the Jomox to sequence drum racks in Ableton or an Analog Rytm. In terms of effects, an Evans SE 810 tape delay, Ibanez AD202, Vermona Retroverb and Eventide Space are integral to sound of this album. The preamp in the Evans provides a lot of lovely grit. Having said that, I’ve used a lot of Ableton out-of-the box effects as well. It seems some people shy away from using them but I think many of them are great in their simplicity. I also think the Soundcraft EPM6 mixer’s EQ plays an important role to the sound. That adjustable frequency in the mid range EQ band has a lovely filter-y effect. Lastly we shall not forget that the crappy electrics in my apartment that has most certainly affected the sound of the album. There is 60 cycle hum and hisses a bit all over the place. I’ve been friends with Ida for some years now and we’ve been discussing a release pretty much since one. I think there has been up to 50 tracks in the mix from the beginning. Ida has mastered all the tracks and played a huge part in choosing the tracks to be featured on the album. Her moderation made the album to feel like an album and not just like random tracks. Ida also sings on the opening track. Her lovely voice really takes that track to a whole other level. Not to forget all friends that have been forced to listen to all these tracks over the past few years. And to Eyvind Blix who’s advice I take seriously. Anna Persson who has written the bio and given appreciated feedback. And, the extremely talented Jean Perinet for making the graphics. And of course, to my partner Alice who supports me and gives so much love. Thank you.
Hexagon
The concept of Hexagon I have to give Ida credit to. She came up with that name for the album and I think it taps nicely into some sort of circular yet sharp feeling of the album. Each track in its own doesn’t really have a start or finish to me. In the same way the album starts and finishes on the same position so to speak. I don’t know… The 80 minute live thing just started as a drone patch on the modular and evolved patching different patches on the fly ending in a just as simple patch. In a way, it’s its on album. In a way it isn’t. In a way it shouldn’t be released.

We finally reached this stage and are beyond happy to present this amazing, raw, dusty and stunning music by him.
This is a taste of whats to come, a full drone journey and is also a part of the album that will be releases digitally and limited edition on wood USB sticks.
“Dust Mechanics premiere release for Nordanvind.
Modular systems, circular patterns and sharp rhythms form a raw and brilliant album consisting a 12 tracks long ambiguous, hypnotic and satisfying journey ending in a live recorded drone session being track 13.
Like a moving sphere oscillating in a given space, the tracks are putting the listener inside different types of loops altogether creating a logical meaningful unity.”

May the stories of the old ones, the ancient ones, the land and the trees, the plants and the earth be whispered to you.
May you warm your toes by the hearth side as the land starts to speak in the cold and old icy voice of winter, the voice that appears when we pass the mid winter mark; the voice that talks in stories of growth, of becoming, of new slates and brand new mossy gateways.
May you be comforted by the fire that can be lit inside your body, by the light you hold inside, the light of love, forgiveness and passion.
Rest well dear one, warm your bones and listen in the silence, in the cold, for the rustling of truth telling that comes from the earth and the air, the rustling of the newness that springs from the compost of the old.
