Even painting our own nails needs some investment of time, hoping they dry quickly so we could finish the laundry, pick up our crying baby or get dressed for the evening’s event. When I was in my 20’s, I worked with a young woman who would become my closest friend. Sandy G was intelligent, ambitious, strong-willed and the image of beauty. Her long, black, shiny hair was the envy of everyone! We shared the same dreams for our future. She taught me how to stand up for myself, and to believe myself. She was fierce and fearless and a feminist before it ever had a name. One day while I was dealing with a customer (we worked in a jewellery store) she walked past my workstation and suddenly shouted out to me “BROWN SUGAR!” It came out of the blue and took me by surprise. I thought it was the funniest thing I had ever been called. I felt the name was so endearing and gave me a nice, warm, fuzzy feeling. It was the only time she called me that. Not long after, she died tragically in a car accident. The name Nr1BrownSugar (read as Number One Brown Sugar) is my way of honouring her memory. The pandemic had taken a toll on my nails with all the hand sanitizers and hand washing.🫣 My nails had become weak and they started breaking making them shorter than my attention span during zoom meetings. 😜
