A big thank you to everyone who joined our Algae lunch lecture on Monday 🌱

Jean Baptiste covered some very interesting points regarding the sustainable development of this marine bio-resource: Algae’s use goes beyond the food industry as it can be used in many other applications including fishing lines and nets 🎣
This is possible thanks to its resistance which is equal to nylon for 24 hours, after which it starts the degradation process.
It’s also an interesting material for plastic bottles to make them more environmentally friendly 💧
Jean Baptiste showed us Ale and Gin containing algae species like sugar kelp and ulva 🍸
To wrap up everyone received a seaweed snack to try this superfood themselves 💥

You may have heard we are teaming up with SISTERS for our next event, but now it’s time to learn what SISTERS is all about and why their work is essential for our planet! 🌍

👉 The SISTERS project aims to reduce food loss and waste in the main stages of the Value Chain in Europe through innovations targeted to each stage of the chain: new tools for primary producers for promoting direct and Short Chain sales (primary producers); new technological innovations such as dynamic labeling & solutions in for processors and retailers; and campaigns for retailers and consumers on food loss and waste.

🇪🇺 Only in the EU, we generate every year around 89 million tonnes of Food Loss and Waste, accounting for 20% of the total food produced, with costs estimated at € 143 billion, impacting each stage of the Food Value Chain.

🌍 Globally, roughly 33% (by weight) of the edible parts of food produced for human consumption is lost or wasted, which is around 1.3 billion tonnes of and per year.

Do you ever wonder how you could use your kitchen scraps for something useful? Join us, in collaboration with SISTERS, for an exciting new event:

FIRST on April 3rd, we will release videos of creative recipes on our website and social media. You can choose your favorite food waste reduction recipe presented by our talented chefs.👩🏽‍🍳

THEN on April 28th, the winner will be announced at the lecture by SISTERS on the current challenges in the agrifood value chain and their innovative solutions. Don't worry about going hungry... we got you covered with lunch. You'll also have the chance to connect with other students and ask the teams thoughtful questions. 💭

Last week we had an amazing community meal, shared amongst students and other community members. A three course meal was cooked from donated food, in the spirit of giving and a sustainable no- waste policy. There was also donated clothing that was handed out to those in need.

Thank you everyone who came out to our sustainability- focused event with WWF this past Tuesday! The evening started with a fantastic presentation by our keynote speaker, followed by an engaging panel discussion where the audience got the opportunity to ask the panelists specific questions. We rounded up with some coffee and fika where many of our participants got to stay and discuss the topic amongst themselves and with the panelists. The past two days, we represented KTH Foodtech at the international Foodtech conference BigMeet!

2 days of bold ideas, stunning demos and insightful comments galore! We've met key actors in the private sector and grassroots initiatives. A generation from now the global food system will look radically different, simply because it has to. The transformation will not only affect the current food value chain but will also add new players to the mix. Everywhere there is a need for strategic re-thinking, entrepreneurship, tech, science and changing consumer patterns.

The Sweden Foodtech Big Meet is the annual foodtech un-conference where Sweden Foodtech invites the best foodtech companies, entrepreneurs, scientists and athletes from all over the world. 🍔

Last Monday, we got to learn about how Arla integrates sustainability into their business and their efforts to reduce their carbon footprint. 🌱👣

A case workshop was held where students got to work on contemporary sustainability challenges in the dairy industry. All teams presented their solutions and the winning team won a months supply of Pucko, additional to the goodiebags that all participants received from Arla. 💡🏆

Thanks to all participants for your engagement and sharing your brilliant ideas! And of course, thank you Arla for the insight within your work with sustainability. 🐄💚
