Here's an antique German 3-hole wall clock with a wooden case that strikes on the quarters with hourly chime. Each of the hole is an access for the key to wind up a spring drum that powers up a function so the three holes are for the clock movement to tell time, hourly strikes, and the quarterly chime in Big-Ben music (some clocks allow the selection of different music). The pendulum helps to disperse the energy on the clock movement, and they are usually good for 8 days. So these clocks are typically wound up weekly. If you see clocks with a single hole, that means it is a time only clock, two-holes mean that it tells time and chimes on the half and hourly. The chime can be on bell/s, coil or long rods, and the tone of the sound is affected by the type of alloy, length, and the type of materials on the clock's casing. This clock has a rather attractive door with bevelled glass. The sound is a little off and can be adjusted for a better resonance.
