Holloway Lane, Singapore, circa 1936
We have for sale from our collection a 1952 Hercules Popular gentleman's bicycle with a 22" frame and 28" wheels. It has Sturmey Archer drum brakes with roller levers, as well as a Sturmey Archer three speed gear system integrated into the hub brake. It is also supplied with a brass Sturmey Archer control lever, a pre-WW2 piece.
Originally handmade in Birmingham, England, in 1952, it was then imported into Singapore and privately-owned since.
Restored in 2011 by Mr Sulaiman of The Rebound Centre, this exquisite bicycle was rebuilt from its frame up. No expense was spared. Wheels, tyres, mudguards, the entire brake, gear and even its full dynamo lighting system comprise entirely of new-old-stock parts. Mr Sulaiman removed all original paint, then hand-painted it in its original Buckingham Black with pinstriping in gold leaf, complementing the correct decals, brass badge, etc. It was then finished with rich layers of clear lacquer.
After this laborious and careful two-year process, the bicycle was carefully assembled by Messrs. Loh of now defunct Song Seng Chan on Joo Chiat Road, with a crowning piece to complete this herculean restoration project - an original 1950s Hercules owners manual and guarantee certificate, still ensconced in its factory-sealed envelope (not shown in pictures), comes supplied with the bicycle.
It has not been cycled since its restoration, having served exclusively as a display piece in our gallery.
This one-of-a-kind collectors item - the quintessential gentleman's bicycle with a rich history - is for sale to the discerning collector. Please enquire for pricing.
Originally purchased circa 1960 from Robinsons Dept Store in Singapore, this Raleigh has weathered the test of time rather well. A three-speed, she is well fitted with Sturmey Archer drum brakes front and rear, stainless steel spokes and rims, full gearcase, Brooks B66 saddle, etc. I added a Lucas bell and replaced a generic headlamp with an original Miller headlamp - which suits the original dynamo nicely, itself a Miller item as well.
