Causeway Centenary
Before the existence of land routes between Singapore and Johor, one would have to set sail across the Johor Straits to commute between the two places! The official opening of the Causeway in 1924 allowed commuters to travel by land, and it has become an iconic landmark that connects the two countries together. SARBICA 2023
#OnThisDay 56 years ago, the Southeast Asia Regional Branch of the International Council on Archives (SARBICA) was established, with the aim of fostering collaborative relations among the Southeast Asian archival institutions to collectively strengthen the protection of archival heritage in the region. As a member of SARBICA (www.fb.com/sarbica.ica), the National Archives of Singapore regularly participates in SARBICA events. Recently, our archivists attended the 24th SARBICA Executive Board Meeting and International Symposium, an annual gathering to strengthen relations and exchange knowledge among archivist professionals in Southeast Asia. Hosted by the National Archives of Thailand, the theme was “Archives in Digital Era: Changes, Adaptations, Achievements”. Archivists exchanged ideas and shared experiences about navigating through the analog-to-digital transition, which brought about significant changes in the archives world. The Causeway Centenary
When the Johor-Singapore Causeway officially opened on 28 June 1924, it was described as "one of the greatest engineering works that (had) been undertaken in the Far East". A century later, the Causeway serves up to 300,000 commuters travelling between the two countries daily, and this figure is expected to increase further. Have you ever wondered why the Causeway was built, where its raw materials were sourced, or even the personal memories that were forged through its history? Building our oral history collection
This #InternationalArchivesDay, take a look back to our earlier years in building our oral history collection! In June 1981, the Oral History Unit of the Archives and Oral History Department launched a special project to capture Singaporeans' reminiscences of the past, recording both everyday life and milestone events. Individuals like retired civil service officer Attan bin Idris and ex-journalist Peng Song Toh answered the call, contributing their invaluable stories. Today, the National Archives of Singapore continues to collect and preserve the rich oral history of our nation. Buy Singapore Goods Campaign
How many items in your home are “Made in Singapore”? 🇸🇬 In an effort to promote Singapore-made products, the “Buy Singapore Goods” campaign was introduced in 1956 by the then Ministry of Commerce and Industry, and the Singapore Manufacturers’ Association. The campaign sought to shift public perceptions that locally made products were of lower quality than imported goods and to bolster Singapore’s growing manufacturing industry. Van Kleef Aquarium
The Van Kleef Aquarium was Singapore’s first public aquarium and it opened on 8 September 1955, at the foot of Fort Canning Hill.🐠🦀 The aquarium housed more than 180 varieties of fishes in different marine environments which appealed to many Singaporeans and tourists alike. By the late 1970s, its vistorship peaked at an annual average of 400,000 visitors. Despite the permanent closure of the aquarium in 1996, its name found new purpose when the National University of Singapore’s decided to name its water research facility “Van Kleef Centre” in 2013. Relocation of the Merlion
The mythical Merlion, which possesses the body of a fish and head of a lion is regarded as a national emblem for tourism and stands as one of Singapore’s most popular attractions to date. Today, you can find this impressive 8.6-metre-tall statue at Merlion Park, adjacent to One Fullerton at the Marina Bay waterfront. Its relocation from Esplanade Bridge to Merlion Park was no easy feat - the entire operation took days and it even required Esplanade Drive to be closed off. The statue was unveiled on 15 September 2002 in a simple ceremony to also celebrate the Merlion’s 30th birthday. Pulau Senang Prison
Imagine a prison without bars in Singapore, where prisoners are allowed to roam freely on their own. This was the case back in 1960, when Pulau Senang, one of the southern islands in Singapore, was used as an experiment to rehabilitate prisoners through manual labour. Unfortunately, things went awry on 12 July 1963 when a riot broke out. Many inmates on the island set fire to buildings, and the prison was destroyed in just 40 minutes. Superintendent Daniel Dutton and two other staff were also gruesomely killed in the incident. 18 men were eventually convicted of murder and sentenced to death by hanging — the largest number of executions ever carried out on a single day in Singapore. #HistoryUnderAMinute #PulauSenang #Throwback
