Wei Ying chose to join the Environmental Services (ES) industry instead of other industries such as banking and finance, a common choice among her peers. Her stint has opened her eyes to this relatively stigmatised industry, which is often perceived to be low-skilled and less productive. She therefore plays an important role in transforming her company’s cleaning operations through technology adoption and encouraging their older workers to see the benefits of using technology to help make their work less strenuous. The hard work of her team has paid off and today, their workers are receptive towards learning new technologies and have acquired new skills.

When asked about her decision to join the industry, Wei Ying replied, “I realised that the knowledge acquired from my course of study is highly applicable and relevant in the ES industry. Witnessing how technology and innovation can be integrated into the industry amazed me. Coupled with the rising demand for environmental services, the industry has high growth potential. I hope to have a positive impact on the ES Industry to help maintain a cleaner and greener Singapore, and to drive positive change”.

Through her work with different departments, she identifies opportunities to improve efficiency and productivity. Other than kickstarting pilot projects on cleaning technologies (such as the Autonomous Scrubber, Smart Compactor Bins, and Smart Toilets), Wei Ying also implemented multiple digital solutions that have been helpful during this COVID-19 period, and tapped on the Productivity Solutions Grant for ES to accelerate the adoption of cleaning technologies.

“Ultimately, I hope to mentor youths who are interested in joining the industry, and give them insight into the ES industry. My wish is to help build a skilled and resilient workforce that is able to uplift the ES Industry, redesign jobs for our older workers, and push for more adoption of robust technology. To young adults who are looking to kickstart their careers, don’t be afraid to join internship programmes where you can dip your toes into the ES industry to see if it suits you,” she shared.

“It was when i was tried out the night shift at my first attached project site. It was a unique experience to work with the cleaners through midnight from 10pm to 7am when normally people were sleeping and it was very quiet and seeing people work during that time period was a surreal experience.

With the world around us evolving at a rapid pace and with covid narrowing down employment opportunities and people looking to choose only multi skilled people, it is important to have a variety of skills to be a very favourable candidate. In LS 2 you get to learn about various departments which include Environmental Services, Engineering, Business Management, Data analytics and Marketing etc. This helps to equip the intern with a huge range of skills that makes them an attractive proposition to other companies in the long run too.” - Vickram, Management Intern
