Ramadan falls on the 9th month of the Islamic calendar. During the holy month of Ramadan, Muslims observe a whole month of fasting, refraining from eating and drinking from dawn to dusk, and abstaining from engaging in any negative acts. Fasting during Ramadan is one of the five pillars of Islam. The fast begins before dawn and breaks after sunset when it is time for the evening meal. This is known as iftar. Children who have not reached puberty, the feeble elderly, the sick whose health is likely to be severely affected by fasting, expectant mothers, and women nursing their children are exempted from fasting. Women who are menstruating, as well as travellers, are also exempted from fasting but must make up for each day taken off at another time. During the nights of Ramadan, it is desirable for Muslims to perform tarawih prayers (referred to as extra prayers) in addition to their daily prayers. It is common to see Muslims congregating at the mosques, communal halls, or void decks of their HDB flats performing prayers together (pre-COVID phase). They can also perform the prayers at home. Every Muslim is also obliged to give zakat fitrah (religious tithe) to the poor and needy within the month. The first day of fasting this year begins this Sunday, 03 April 2022! We wish all Muslims a blessed Ramadan 😊 Sources: The Singapore Ethnic Mosaic: Many Cultures, One People – Edited by Mathew Mathews/ Published by World Scientific Mazelan Anuar, Heirwin Mohd Nasir, and Sharon Koh (n.d.).
