About the play:

A kidnapping goes wrong when nobody is willing to hand over the demanded ransom.

In a gripping two-hander performed by Dana Lam and Saifuddin Jumadi, searing class and racial tensions collide.

How much is a person’s worth to another? Who remains a larger hostage?

Heterotopia Cafe is a nomadic artistic research station functioning as an ad-hoc satellite office of Jalan Besar Salon. This evolving and shifting curatorial project explores and evolves through the different rhizomatic spaces across various locations.

The inaugural edition of Heterotopia Cafe is a temporary inhabitation in 幸福自习室, with 幸福自习室 being an open-door office in the neighbourhood of Tianhe, Guangzhou. The Cafe invites the public to engage with research materials, generate dialogue and expand current curatorial ideas.

The this edition consists of three components. The first is a Pay-it-Forward cafe, where customers could pay for beverages not only for themselves but also for the next person. A dynamic price list will be updated and published weekly.

The second is an information-sharing station and community archive, this evolving archive consists of rotating information, documents and book titles contributed by our community of friends and family of the space and neighbours in this location.

The third is a research and collaborative workshop space that hosts events featuring our Artist in Residence and other international artists from our network. In this edition, we have local artist Li Shan Shan in a month-long with us. While each component works in silo, they intersect and mutually affect the other in this hybrid ‘other’ space.

The Kresek Bundle includes 1 copy of Kresek - Daily Life of Plastic Bags , 1 limited print postcard with original artwork by Cynthia Delaney Suwito , and 1 limited edition handmade totebag.

The totebag comes with a concealed inner lining made of plastic that crinkles, as a nod to the title of the book. Handmade from cotton, this totebag comes with hand frayed detailing and various hand painted expressions in the style of a plastic bag.

With the prompt to participate in an island-wide open studio, Walk Walk Don’t Run ( ), Cynthia Delaney Suwito ( ) is invited to present in the open studio in Jalan Besar Salon. With the limitation of space and social gathering in the time of pandemic and the shifting geographical locations between the programmer and the artist, we expand the format of the residency and experiment with a new mode of presentation.

This open studio will mark the start of a 3 month long project between Cynthia and JBS in which a light-hearted wordless comic, Kresek, will be independently published. Drop by on 30th October between 10:30AM to 6PM to see her work-in-progress and to learn more about the collaboration!

Jalan Besar Salon

This year, the Jalan Besar Salon presents critical responses from our Open Call on placemaking and identity formation. The programme seeks to investigate the ways we foster a sense of place and belonging, coping with change and aging, examining how and where we develop social relations beyond our homes and immediate family. We turn to creative placemaking to activate and reactivate domains of shared memory and public spaces to transform them into spaces with the capacity to connect communities and grow ideas.

THE DRY BAR is a play on the “beauty parlors” flanking the Jalan Besar Salon, as we see our neighbours performing care services to any and everyone willing to venture into their spaces. The Jalan Besar Salon also continues to take inspiration from the Salons of 17th-18th Century France, where many ambitious women gathered to exchange ideas, receive and give criticism, present their work, and discuss the ideas and pieces of other intellectuals. The salon was a key institution in which women rose to positions of power and influence, departing from being mere hosts to agents. In contrast to the aristocratic leanings of earlier salons, the Jalan Besar Salon depend on the principles of equality, of opinions being valuable and up for discussion rather than debate. Our programme seeks to create a nurturing and creative environment to enable friendships and relationships to be forged as people connect, have conversations in the space and incubating new ideas.

About the Jalan Besar Salon

Conceptualised by the Emporium of the Modern Man (EoMM), the annual JalanBesarSalon popup seeks to provide a platform for learning and communication. The Salon serves to act as a catalyst for the hotbeds of creativity and progressive ideas in the fields of urban management, psychology, intimacy and socio-environmental topics through the means of art, design and philosophy.
