Reflections from an Elementary art studio. My attempt at capturing and storing those fun and 'Aha' moments in my wonderful journey as an art teacher!
Art has been a deep passion for me since childhood and I teach art at a school. Its been such a memorable journey for my students and me, watching them grow at their own pace and develop their skills across the academic year and this just feels like the next natural step- showcasing my students amazing creations. When I am not teaching, I paint, do sketches, soak up some of the scenic beauty in
We follow the Cambridge Art & Design curriculum at school. Sometimes I struggle in presenting a topic, with a nagging feeling that it is a bit difficult for students to comprehend. But my students almost always surprise me with their unique intelligence and grasping power.
A few weeks ago, the Grade 5 students were introduced to logo design through PowerPoint slides and short videos that showed them just how powerful logos can be. We had short brainstorming sessions wherein I got an inkling of the kind of logo designs I was going to see- these bright sparks came up with some beautiful and power packed logos. Presenting just 9 of them here, (the LinkedIn image limit)..a reminder that our students intelligence and capabilities are par excellence
It was Chinese New Year celebration last week. The youngest Montessori children were all excited in making these Chinese lanterns with colour paper. Real painted lanterns are floated onto the water from the Marina Bay Floating platform each year. Mental note to myself to get our primary kids to participate next year! Anyways, coming back to these lovelies, I printed out the lanterns and the children coloured and decorated them with red and yellow colour paper, they also understood the mosaic art making process and saw pictures of a mosaic tiled wall. The icing on the cake, err lantern of course was the gold coloured paper that came right at the very end! Tied it with a gold strip and red yarn and the kids were all set to pose with their lanterns and take them home.. GongXiFaCai!!

The Christmas festive season brought a lot of joy and cheer for the kids amidst all the uncertainty. Each one of the kids from Kindergarten to Grade 5, created a decoration in the studio, for a giant Christmas tree. They adorned the beautiful tree in all their glory, twinkling lights and all...🎊🎊
COVID is disrupting lives all over the world and Singapore which had been largely well managed is no exception now. Our school goes into online learning for a week for now. Lots of restrictions had been place for the last 1 year but art lessons and regular academics went on as usual. The students of Grade 5 created some beautiful Greek vases with the scratch art technique. They learnt about the history of Greek pottery, before drawing an outline of vases, these were then cut out and colored with oil pastels, using some blending techniques. Next came a coat of black paint. They were left to dry snd the following week, the students studied the techniques of scratch art and created designs into their vases, they make for a lovely display on the boards.
