A client came to me with a 2014 bike. Needed to restore the bike at a budget. Condition is 2/10. The Rear Triangle was corroding away, so I needed to replace it.

Client brought me the rear triangle n fork. There were no surprises until we linked up the old cables. The old cable housings were causing drag for the gears n brakes. Replaced with a new set. Thereafter all seems to work well, so I thought. There was a funny knocking sound that came from the hub during the test ride. Had to spend the afternoon overhauling it. Very mess.... Finally ready for a 2nd test ride. Things were all good.

Why should we change our bike chain?
Chains are mechanical components consisting of bearings n links forming into cylindrical transmission loop. Like all mechanical parts, there will be wear n tear.

What is the big deal of a stretch or worn out chain?
Firstly, ride experience and efficiency will be compromised. Secondly, have you hear of a snapped chain? That is when our chain breaks. Not something we want during our rides.

The chain is the only power transmission component that relays our paddling into propulsion power. It undergoes a lot of stress during our rides, especially uphills.

So we need to ensure our chain are well oiled (not grease) to reduce the wear and tear.

What is a good chain?
A chain gauge is used to measure if the chain is stretched. I like to start with 100% of the gauge side. Fig 1 in the green bike shows that the chain is not stretched.

But if wear and tear is a cause of concern then I simply flip my gauge to check if there are significant wear and tear, it shows less than 75%. Fig 2 shows a good chain.

What is not a good chain?
Fig 3 shows a chain that is 100% stretched. There are heavy wear and tear in the bearings and links. I will strongly recommend to have it changed.

I flipped the gauge over, if the chain is 100% worn, than at 75% it must be worn out too. Fig 4 confirms it. There are chains which wear less than 75%, so it will depend if you want it change.

There are chains with either damaged bearings or links; even if gauge shows no significant wear, we will still recommend replacing the chain. Rusty chain is another problem, I will highly recommend the chain to be changed. It prevents rusty bearings n links from affecting other bike parts.

Cycling is a healthy family recreation to build and improve family bonding. Having well-maintained bikes are important to ensure safe and enjoyable rides for our loved ones.

I decided to extend my bike maintenance services after my friend bought a Brompton and the bike was not in good condition despite the previous owner having serviced it the month before it went on sale. The gear indicator chain was totally loosen, the jockey wheels and sprocket were clogged with dirt, sand and hair, on top of other issues (e.g. transmission chain was choked with grease). The previous owner sold the bike due to a bad fall from it. I did a thorough cleanup and servicing of the bike and now it is safe to ride.

My maintenance service (disassemble, degrease, clean, service, grease, oil, assemble, testing) is at $80 per bike. I will clean the bike as best I can. It takes about 1-3 days to service. Replacing of worn out and damaged parts are not included.

An addition of $40 per bike for express service (same day collection, bike to be received before 10am).

Pickup and delivery service is at $25 per trip (1-way only).
