The Hidden Suffering Behind Your Seafood: Modern Day Slavery on Fishing Vessels

As the sun sets over bustling harbors, diners in high-end restaurants eagerly await their seafood, oblivious to the dark reality behind their meal.

On distant water fishing vessels, Indonesian migrant fishers endure unimaginable hardships, hidden beneath the waves.

The plight of these fishers has been revealed through documentaries like "Before You Eat," exposing physical violence, long working hours, inadequate food, untreated illnesses, and even death.

Modern-day slavery on fishing vessels is pervasive, with Indonesian fishers being among the most affected. Lured by promises of good wages, they find themselves trapped in exploitation. Recruitment agencies use deceptive tactics, offering unclear work contracts and little support once aboard.

According to Greenpeace, up to 30% of the global fishing workforce may be subjected to forced labor. The International Labour Organization (ILO) reports nearly 25 million people worldwide are victims of forced labor, many in the fishing industry.

Despite decades of research and damning reports, the seafood industry continues fisheries crimes. Illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing depletes marine life and perpetuates human rights abuses. Seafood from these practices often ends up in supermarkets and restaurants, far removed from the suffering endured by fishers.

"Before You Eat" urges viewers to question their seafood's origins, highlighting how overfishing and capturing protected species contribute to modern-day slavery. The chaotic labor process reveals systemic failures allowing these practices to persist.

Gebirah: Advocating for Change

Gebirah, a Singapore-based humanitarian organization, supports victims of modern-day slavery in the fishing industry. Providing vital assistance and raising awareness, Gebirah advocates for policy changes to end these inhumane practices and ensure a fair seafood industry.

Change starts with awareness and action. As consumers, we can make a difference by being mindful of where our seafood comes from and supporting ethical practices. Look for locally sourced fish and consider the human cost behind your purchases.

Governments and corporations must play a crucial role. Stronger regulations and enforcement are needed to hold perpetrators accountable and protect fishers' rights. NGOs like Gebirah are making strides, but we need your support.

Next time you enjoy seafood, remember the untold suffering behind it. Support ethical practices and demand transparency from the seafood industry to help end modern-day slavery on fishing vessels. Gebirah invites partners, collaborators, and volunteers to join us in this mission. Together, we can make a difference and bring justice to those who have endured so much.

Join the movement to protect our oceans and the people who work in them. Let's ensure every meal we enjoy is free from exploitation.
