Love this! And Republicans and racists are furious. Senator Rick Scott of Florida posted that Singaporean Shou Zi Chew is "leading the CCP's spying efforts.” To racists and demagogues like Rick Scott, all Asians are Chinese and all Chinese are communists.
Kudos to Anna Wintour and the Met!

This is my friend Marc, whom I met when he was working in Singapore at the Hugo Boss store. Marc now lives in the Philippines with his wife and 2-year old son. He is just 33 years old and he was recently diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma, a cancer of the lymphatic system. This is a highly curable cancer if the patient can get the right chemotherapy treatments. But Marc has had to delay needed chemo because he lacks the funds and cannot afford the needed treatments. He needs 12 sessions of chemo every 2 weeks and each session costs between SG$400 to $600 (15k-25k pesos) minimum dosage. He also needs to undergo a PET Scan first, which will cost SG$1500 (60K pesos).
I've made a direct donation to him and am appealing now to anyone who can also help to make a donation for Marc's life-saving medical treatment. Even a small donation will help if multiplied by many donors. Please help save his life, and ensure that his little boy won't grow up fatherless. Just click on this link to make a donation. Thank-you!

At least 22 killed in Maine shootings: Live updates 26/10/2023

Horrifying. At least 22 people were killed and another 50-60 injured by a man in Maine just hours ago. Another day in America, another mass shooting. Despite the millions of Americans shot, injured and liked by fi****ms through the decades, the gun lobby remains so powerful and politicians so corrupt that there are no meaningful laws to restrict and control fi****ms.

At least 22 killed in Maine shootings: Live updates At least 22 people are dead and another 50 to 60 people have been injured in two mass shootings in Lewiston, Maine, on Wednesday night, according to multiple law enforcement sources. Follow for live updates.

Facebook has just replaced its old Laugh emoji reaction, introduced 13 years ago, with a new, “friendlier” version. The old version, ostensibly meant to depict laughter, instead became a mark of derision, mockery and ridicule. Trolls used it on any post or person they disliked and it was used far more to communicate “hate” than “haha”. The laugh reaction made Facebook's comments sections an even more toxic. An 18-year-old in Missouri, Isiah Craig Fitzgerald, was shot and killed after he reacted to a Facebook profile photo with the laughter emoji. An Islamic cleric in Bangladesh even issued a Fatwah against the emoji and declared it haram for Muslims to use.
Now, FB has revised the emoji to make it less hostile and hateful, and well, haters and trolls are not happy. Now that deserves a haha reaction! 😄

A 6-year old boy brought a fully-loaded gun to his school and shot his teacher after an argument. And of course it's in the US. And of course the gun rights organisations are still saying guns aren't a problem in the country.

“Authorities have said it was “not an accidental shooting” and part of an altercation when the unnamed first grader in a class at Richneck elementary in Virginia town took out a handgun and shot Zwerner in the abdomen causing life-threatening injuries. Zwerner reportedly warned her students to flee as she lay bleeding on the classroom floor.”

The more I travel, the more I appreciate Singapore and realise how rare what we have here is. Throughout history, independent city-states haven't lasted long and were all taken over by larger powers. Today, only three city-states remain: The Vatican, Monaco and Singapore.

The real threats we face today, however, aren't just external but also internal: the damage that we can bring to ourselves with rabble-rousing nativism, populism, religious extremism, xenophobia and apathy.

As we celebrate Singapore's 57th year of independence, I wish our tiny country longevity and prosperity. I hope that Singaporeans realise that our future success and even survival is not guaranteed and requires that we all play our part in combatting the internal threats that are as dangerous as any we may face from the outside.

Here's a revolutionary thought for the homophobes: if you're against gay s*x, don't do it! If you're offended by what other consenting adults do in bed, stop poking your nose into their bedrooms!
FFS stop trying to control everyone else's private habits with your own religious beliefs!
Thanks to Calvin Cheng for this logical, sensible and straightforward post!

Heatwave: Wildfires spread across Europe as countries break record temperatures - BBC News 23/07/2022

I was just in the UK this week, when Europe shattered all heat records and wildfires broke out around the country. Just a few weeks earlier, the conservative majority of the U.S. Supreme Court gutted the US Environmental Protection Agency’s ability to regulate carbon emissions. The Republican Party in the US, the world's largest historical polluter, is gleefully protecting the fossils fuel industry and denying that climate change is real. America will fiddle as the world burns.

America's solution for school shootings? Not gun control but 𝗯𝘂𝗹𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗼𝗳 𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗸𝘀 for school children!!? This says everything about how fucced-up a country the US is when it comes to gun violence. The US has had 𝟮𝟴𝟴 school shootings since 2009 that have killed 𝟮𝟰𝟯 𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗿𝗲𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗿𝘀, and this year alone, there have been over 200 mass shootings that have killed 296. ⁣
The Republicans value their guns more than the lives of people and the carnage continues.

The Big Read in short: Bridging the Singaporean-foreigner divide 01/05/2022

The world doesn't need Singapore. There are private properties in other countries that are 10 times the size of Singapore and more than 60 cities in the world with far larger populations than ours. Companies can locate their factories, offices and workers to so many other places.

Singapore can sink into the ocean tomorrow and the world will continue without missing a beat. But Singapore can't survive without the world coming in with investment, trade, workers and visitors. Singaporeans should never be so arrogant as to think the world revolves around us and that we're indispensable. Far from it.
Already, 25% of our population is aged over 65 and the country is ageing rapidly, and with the lowest birthrate in the world, we are not replacing ourselves. Primary schools are closing and merging because there are not enough students. The xenophobic mentality of some people is akin to that of a mountain village that's dying out but still chases away visitors.

The Big Read in short: Bridging the Singaporean-foreigner divide SINGAPORE — When Ms Fiona Jia first visited Singapore in 2017, she was at first puzzled to find a mobile phone left unattended on the table at a cafe.
