Our Story
Handpicked (www.handpicked.sg) is an asian digital pantry borne of a singular desire – to provide the everyday home cook with a selection of choice pantry basics, carefully cherry-picked for their artisanal quality.
The first products listed on Handpicked is the most common of the Asian dietary staples, noodles. “With a 4,000-year-old history, noodles are not only a staple, but an essential part of the Asian culture. And there is such a thing as a better noodle.” says Ms. Karen Nah, co-founder of Handpicked. “My father started a noodle factory in the 60s, learning from some of the best noodle masters and procuring choice raw ingredients from around the region. Our noodles are made using time-tested recipes half a century old. And with the help of modern day innovations, we are able to innovate upon and create different noodle variants.” These fresh noodles have in the past, only been made commercially available to local restaurants and hotels. But now, they too can be enjoyed in our homes though Handpicked.
The guiding belief of Handpicked when curating items for sale, is a strong focus on supporting local-made produce and local brand. While sourcing for new product offerings, Handpicked also aims to share the stories behind each ingredient. “Handpicked is an extension of My Singapore Food (www.mysingaporefood.com), a project close to my heart.” added Karen, “It is an online resource portal where I document heritage home-cooked recipes by Singapore- ans across diverse cultures through a collection of short films. It was through this project that I realised, people genuinely want to hear the stories behind each dish, or in this case each ingredient. Take my family business as an example, many Singaporeans may not even realise that we are a local noodle manufacturer with a 50-year-old heritage. I want to create a platform to share the stories and insights of these artisanal ingredients which make up our social landscape.”
