National Deaf Games | Deaf Sports Association (Singapore) 09/11/2023

To all DSA members, athletes, officials, families and friends:

The 2023 National Deaf Games promise to be a unique opportunity for inclusion and celebration. While some disagreements exist regarding the Deaf Sports Association's initiatives for this year's event, there is merit in understanding their objectives.

By embracing diversity and accessibility, the DSA aims to foster an environment showcasing athletic talent across all abilities. Our vision emphasizes the power of community that arises when people unite through shared interests, rather than attributes that sometimes divide.

With openness and goodwill on all sides, the Games can serve as an example of how reasonable accommodations and bringing more voices to the table can strengthen our shared experience of sportsmanship and fellowship.

While finding community among peers with similar experiences can provide comfort, avoiding competition from outside our community may not be the best approach for long-term growth and development.

Continually facing opponents of equal or greater skill levels is often necessary to reach one's highest potential.

Complaining about inclusion of others typically says more about one's own confidence than it does about the value of diversity.

As with any endeavor, challenging oneself by competing against skilled adversaries tends to yield the greatest benefits. It allows one to identify weaknesses and implement strategies for strengthening skills. For a team seeking excellence, maintaining a low level of competition by restricting newcomers may be counterproductive. Progress typically demands venturing outside of one's comfort zone from time to time.

May the competitions at the NDG2023 this year promote the well-being and joy of all participants.

- Latest News -

The Deaf Sports Association (Singapore), also known as DSA, is set to launch its Singapore Sign-Language (SgSL) course next month, in September 2023. This initiative aims to make learning SgSL more accessible to the public, thus enhancing the ability of Singaporeans to effectively communicate with the deaf community. It’s not uncommon to encounter situations where staff members at food outlets struggle to effectively communicate with deaf customers. By expanding the knowledge of SgSL, this course will bridge the communication gap and foster inclusivity.

The SgSL course will consist of 10 sessions, held every Tuesday or Saturday, from September to November 2023. The DSA is offering special rates for new sign-ups, so now is the perfect time to register.

We are thrilled to announce that DSA will be launching its very own Singapore Sign-Language (SgSL) course, scheduled to commence in September 2023 (next month).

Learning sign language can enhance empathy and understanding for the deaf community. When you engage with their language and culture, you develop a greater appreciation for their experiences and the obstacles they face.

Studying sign language can boost your communication skills. It enhances your awareness of non-verbal cues, body language, and facial expressions, all of which are crucial for effective communication in any situation.

Learning sign language can lead to more job opportunities across different fields. Industries like education, healthcare, interpretation, and customer service are actively looking for professionals who can communicate with the deaf community. By acquiring sign language skills, you can enhance your employability and expand your career choices.

Don't hesitate! Take action now and sign up today. Limited slots are available for each class, so don't miss out. Plus, take advantage of our special rate during the exciting introductory promotion period.

Yesterday, the World Deaf Bowling Championships 2023 came to a close, and Singapore celebrated their outstanding achievements. The country proudly secured the gold medal for Women's Singles and the bronze medal for Women's All Events, marking their highest accomplishment in the history of the world deaf bowling championships.

Singapore's deaf sports have left a remarkable impact on the global stage, demonstrated by their victories in both the world championships and the Deaflympics. These achievements have required significant sacrifices, including unwavering commitment and substantial funding, to ensure that deaf athletes have the opportunity to excel as world-class competitors.

Despite the challenges faced, such as the constant need to seek financial support by any means necessary, the triumphs attained have made every sacrifice worthwhile.

We are pleased to announce that the team will be arriving today at Changi Airport Terminal 2 at 1620hrs, aboard flight LH778.

We extend a warm welcome to everyone to join us in celebrating our world champion.
