Teachers’ Day Celebration 2024

To our old boys of SJI Junior,

Our school will be celebrating Teachers’ Day on Thursday, 29 August 2024 between 7.30 a.m. and 10.30 a.m.

If you are planning to visit your former teachers, please note that the visiting period will be between 10.40 a.m. and 11.20 a.m. on that day. The General Office and staffroom will be closed at 11.30 a.m. as all staff members will be leaving for their Teachers’ Day Luncheon.

If you are unable to arrive in SJI Junior within the visiting period, you may choose to make an appointment with your former teachers via email and visit them on another day.

For safety and security reasons, visitors are advised to stay within the ground floor of the main school building, around the concourse area and outside the staffroom.

We seek your understanding in this matter. Thank you!

The P2 Sports Carnival was held on Fri 23 August. To promote parent-child bonding through parent-child sports activities, P2 parents were invited to participate with their child in physical activities at various stations. Many P2 parents took leave from work to participate and bonded with their child during the one hour game play. Pupils were proud to showcase their skills of dribbling, kicking, throwing and receiving to their parents.

This morning, the SJI Junior family celebrated 𝐂𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐜 𝐄𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐒𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐲 (𝐂𝐄𝐒) during the 8am Mass at Novena Church. 𝐂𝐄𝐒 is an opportunity for home-parish-school collaboration as well as an annual reminder of why families, parishes and schools must collaborate in the integral formation of our children and youth.

Before the Mass, our Josephians distributed 𝐂𝐄𝐒 Prayer Cards to the church-goers. There were also Josephians serving during the Mass as Altar boys, readers and offertory bearers. May the presence of students in their Catholic school uniforms attending and serving at Mass remind us that the faith education of our children and youth is the joint responsibility of parents, schools and parishes!

BIG THANKS to all students, parents and family members who have joined us at the Novena Church this morning! ❤️

A few of our Josephians were at the Cathedral last evening singing for the 6pm Mass in celebration of Catholic Education Sunday!

It's Catholic Education Sunday! It was a beautiful sight to see both Catholic and non-Catholic students from our mission schools all over the island donning their uniforms to sing at the Saturday 6pm Mass at the Cathedral of the Good Shepherd. Praise the Lord for the gift of these wonderful children!

SJI Junior will be at the 8am Mass of Novena Church tomorrow - Sunday, 25 August 2024 to celebrate 𝗖𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝗘𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗦𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘆! See you there!

CES was inaugurated in September 2017. Since then, students in their school uniforms, together with their parents and teachers, serve as lectors, cantors and hospitality ministers during the annual designated CES masses at various parishes.
CES 2024 will be celebrated on 25 August 2024, the feast day of St. Joseph Calasanz.
St. Joseph Calasanz worked hard to provide a free yet truly Catholic Education to poor boys of his time through the founding of the Pious Schools.
We ask St. Joseph Calasanz to intercede for us that our Catholic schools may "develop an understanding of all that is true, good and beautiful."(Pope Francis, 2017)

Do you like recess? What is your favourite month? What if you could be somebody for a day, who would you be? Those were the topics that Kyler Wee (1 Gabriel), Evan Choo (5 Anthony) and Jude Tan (6 Michael) presented at the Finals of Plain English Speaking Awards (PESA).

The boys delivered their speeches with confidence and poise. Their hard work and dedication were evident in every word, and they truly captivated the audience. Jude Tan emerged as Champion in the Upper Primary Category. Kyler Wee and Evan Choo emerged as Singapore’s top seven speakers in the respective Lower and Upper Primary category. Well done, boys! We are so proud of you!

Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

The Solemnity of the Assumption celebrated in 15 Augusr honours the fact that when the Blessed Virgin Mary completed her life on earth, she was taken body and soul into Heaven to be with her resurrected Son so as to adore the Most Holy Trinity forever. Her assumption into Heaven gives us hope that we, the faithful, will rise so as to live in a new bodily form forever with God when we have completed the course of our earthly life.

We thank Fr Simon for celebrating Mass and the choir made up of our Parent Volunteers for enhancing the Mass experience of our Catholic community.

We were very honoured to have Mr Matthew Tan, a Lasallian alumnus (he studied in St Anthony’s Primary School and SJI), to share his life story during the assembly programme specially organised for our P5 Josephians yesterday, 16 August 2024.

Through the sharing of “𝐇𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐀 𝐏𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫 𝐎𝐟 𝐇𝐨𝐩𝐞 𝐀𝐧𝐝 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐞 𝐎𝐟 𝐇𝐨𝐩𝐞”, Mr Matthew Tan told the audience the struggles he went through and how he overcame them after he was injured in a judo competition 14 years ago when he was 16 years old, which resulted in him sustaining a Traumatic Brain Injury and was left in a coma for over two months.

Our P5 Josephians were greatly inspired and motivated by Mr Matthew Tan’s sharing and his open and honest responses to their questions during the Q&A session.

It was a wet morning at this year’s National Day Celebration on 8 August 2024 but even the rain couldn’t dampen our spirits.

As a school community, we kicked off the celebration with the flag raising ceremony in the hall, followed by a mass workout led by ActiveSG along with our NE ambassadors.

In the classroom, the pupils enjoyed solving puzzles of their favourite local food and Singapore’s iconic landmarks.

Finally, the entire school, together with the senior citizens from Willing Hearts and our school’s Operation Support Staff and cleaning personnels, gathered in the hall for a time of fun, laughter and songs.

Happy Birthday Singapore!
Majulah Singapura!

On Friday 2 August, our P1 Parents arrived in school to participate in the P1 Sports Carnival with their child. Parents and pupils moved around with a score card to various stations and played games to gain points. Medals of Gold, Silver or Bronze will be awarded to the pupils based on their total scores. Both parents and pupils put in their best efforts to maximise their scores. After multiple tries at the game stations, most were able to attain the maximum score for a gold medal!

The SJIJ Mother Tongue Language Fortnight was designed to cultivate a richer appreciation for Mother Tongue languages and their associated cultures among our students. Between 8 and 19 July, we curated an engaging lineup of activities such as learning journeys, art and craft sessions, reading programs, and cultural events, catering to CL, ML, and TL students across all levels. Our students thoroughly enjoyed these learning experiences, immersing themselves in the vibrant cultural heritage.

We sincerely thank our dedicated teachers and parent volunteers for their unwavering support, which was instrumental in making this event a tremendous success!

SJI Junior participated in the National Reading Movement's 'Read for Books' charity drive. Its objective was to raise awareness and share the gift of reading with the less privileged. From 1 to 31 July 2024, for every 10 people who read for 15 minutes, one book or equivalent will be donated to selected beneficiaries.

We had Felix Tan of 5 Anthony presenting to the school assembly the objective and how we should go about fulfilling the criteria. He had earlier written to the school to pitch his idea of participating in this charity drive.

Well done, Felix, and well done, SJI Junior, for spreading the love for reading to the less privileged who may not have access to books!

Mass was celebrated by Fr Brian D'Souza specially for our P6s as they prepare for their preliminary and PSLE exams. During his homily, Fr Brian reminded our boys to keep God close to them amidst the grind of preparing for the exams.

We thank our Parent Volunteers who formed the choir, as well as our P6 parents who were present at Mass. Our boys also received home-made rosaries crafted by our talented PVs. These were blessed by Fr Brian and made for a special keepsake. More importantly, it would serve as a reminder to our boys to keep the school motto close to their' hearts--Ora et Labora (pray and work).

We are incredibly proud of our boys for qualifying for the Semi-Finals of Plain English Speaking Awards (PESA) 2024. They emerged top 14 speakers in Singapore in their respective categories and represented SJI Junior on 24 and 25 July 2024.

At the Semi-Finals, all five boys delivered their speeches with confidence and eloquence. It is inspiring to see how much effort and passion they put into preparing for this event. Their performances were not only impressive but also truly captivating.

Let's continue to support and encourage our young orators as they grow and shine in their journey.

The English Department organised an EL Fest for our boys earlier in Term 3. With the theme 'Where Learning Meets Laughter', our boys had a wide array of activities such as Literacy Stations for the P1s, language games for the P2s and P3s, an Idioms scavenger hunt for the P4s and Spelling Bee for the P5s and P6s. We also invited renowned local author, Ms Vivian Teo, author of the series 'My BFF is an alien' conducting an assembly talk and sharing with us her inspiration for the series. Our lower primary boys were also treated to book sharing by some of the staff members of SJI Junior during recess. Everyone brought home a souvenir card to commemorate the event.

Let's view this short video clip that encapsulates EL Fest 2024! Thank you to everyone who made the event a success, especially our Parent Volunteers who helped manage the language game booths!

As part of the key National Education (NE) efforts by the Ministry of Education, NE Shows have been organized since 1997 to provide a cohort experience for our Primary 5 pupils to immerse “live” in the full spectacle of the National Day Parade (NDP). Yesterday (Saturday, 6 July 2024) was our P5 Josephians’ turn to go to the Padang for their once-in-a-lifetime NE Show (NDP Preview) experience!

Despite “threat” of a possible storm as the sky was overcast with dark clouds, droplets of rain were felt at one point, and the teachers promptly reacted by getting our P5 Josephians to don their poncho or raincoat, that did not dampen their high spirits. Thankfully, it was just a short “weather-scare” and we were blessed with relatively fine weather most of our time at the Padang!

From participating in the Pre-Parade Activities, to cheering the Red Lions Parachutists; watching the Total Defence 40 Dynamic Defence Display; joining in the Singalongs, and catching live Fireworks display … it was truly heartening to see our P5 Josephians having fun and thoroughly enjoying themselves at the NE Show! We hope that this NE Show has provided a unifying experience amongst our P5 Josephians on what it means to be a Singaporean and evoke in them a sense of pride and patriotism; as well as created the learning opportunities for them to understand the significance of our National Day.

Last but not least, the school would like to thank our teachers for spending their Saturday to accompany our P5 Josephians to the NE Show and taking good care of them! We would also like to thank the Army Liaison Personnel and the Heartware Volunteers attached to SJI Junior for this NE Show, they had been very helpful and supportive!

Primary 5 students from SJI Junior and Bendemeer Primary School gathered on 9 May 2024 at SJI Junior for an “Art Jamming Session” led by our Principal Mr Eric Leong. Forging new friendship and leveraging teamwork, the students created a beautiful artwork inspired by renowned Chinese artist Ms Jiang Zhaojin’s passion for sustainable art!

The students’ collaboration resulted in a unique contemporary Chinese landscape painting (山水画) using mixed medium including recycled denim, to promote environmental consciousness. The students’ stunning artwork was displayed alongside a few of Ms Jiang Zhaojin’s artworks (generously on loan by Asian Art Platform) at our SJIJ’s 70th Anniversary “Harmony” Art Exhibition at ION Art Gallery from 22 - 28 June 2024.

After emerging victorious in four rounds, including the preliminary, quarterfinals and semifinals, our SJI Junior Debaters gave their best shot in the Grand Finals of the Wits and Words on 27 May.

We clinched the 1st runner up trophy in the Grand Finals of the Wits and Words 2024! This is no mean feat, considering we were in Division 2 the previous year! Kudos to our Debaters for their charismatic display of wits and words in the Grand Finals!

Our sincere gratitude to our Coach, and the SJI Junior Debate teachers for their guidance and patience. We also extend our heartfelt gratitude to our parents for their unwavering commitment in supporting their son throughout this journey.

Well done, boys!
