Former Prime Minister Fukuda and family have been instrumental in deepening the relationship of Japan with ASEAN. Strong affirmation in his new chapter.
The Fukuda Doctrine advocates for peace and security, the development of "heart-to-heart" relations with Southeast Asia, and positive cooperation with ASEAN. It was first articulated in 1977, just 10 years after ASEAN was founded, by then-Prime Minister of Japan Fukuda Takeo.
Ambassador Peter Tan, as Chair of the ASEAN Committee in Tokyo, delivered opening remarks at a ceremony commemorating the Fukuda Doctrine today. He touched on opportunities for ASEAN and Japan to cooperate on the reopening of borders, digitalisation and climate change. He also spoke about his own experiences with people-to-people exchanges underpinned by the Fukuda Doctrine, and is pictured here with former Prime Minister Fukuda Yasuo in front of the newly unveiled memorial.
Those who read Chinese will be able to make out the Kanji character "心" (heart), forming the phrase "心と心" (heart to heart) near the top of the memorial!
