A quest for the holy grail of clay 🤍

"Episode I: Collecting the samples."

📜 The story has it, many of the potters from this region used to flock around here to collect this rare clay.💎

It is known as the white clay of Kočevsko.

🎓 With a help of traditional potter Janez Pogorelec and Rokodelski center Ribnica , we're on a mission to revive a pottery tradition using this long forgotten clay. 🏺

⛏️🪖 After the coal mining activities stopped, the place around the lake slowly evolved into a natural habitat of many animals and plants, and is now under protection. ⚠️

We're currently in the process of attaining all the necessary permits for extraction of a smaller quantity of material.

✍️In cooperation with the Ribnica Handicraft Center, we're developing the tradition of Ribnica pottery. The light clay found in the Kočevsko area is the basis from which the old tradition passes into a new form. The set of containers (mug, cup, plates, bowl) with a refreshed design and a slight modification of the shape is artistically complemented by a traditional "wave" decoration.

The end product series will be performed by the potter Janez Pogorelec.

New handicraft perservation and development act 📜🇸🇮

🗣Last week I've attended a round table w. .zidan the new act discussion, which will introduce a few significant changes for the handcraft community in Slovenia. 🤞

📝 To sum up: A title "Renowed craftsman", which you will be able to apply for, will grant you an access to around 1,5 million EUR of annualy allocated pool of funds.

🏅 The titles will be assigned by a special commisson of handcraft experts.

✅️ You will be able to propose your suggestions through special tenders in the form of workshops, educational programs or other handicraft projects.

❎️ No social or financial support is predicted as we know it from the "status of cultural worker" at this stage.

Fingers crossed on act implementation🤞

Last week I've had a rare opportunity to host a sweet Korean family from Icheon, a city which is being recognized across the world for its exquisite craftsmanship and pottery. 🇰🇷🏺

Their level of interest in Slovenian traditional ceramics and appreciation for the craft was something I've never seen before. 👏👀

Usually it's the other way around, Slovenians often admire eastern pottery aesthetics. 🇸🇮🏺

Eunji (I hope I can spell your name right) from brought me a beautiful handmade and personally engraved two-set Korean cutlery - I was so surprised, since we've never met before. Thank you! 😊🍽️

Anyway, I just shown them how to make our "potičnica" baking pan and they really tried and did it! 🤗🍞

Over the past few years, I have visited pottery workshops in countries such as Portugal, Norway, Denmark, Thailand, France, New Zealand, Hungary, and Italy.

Maybe that's why I know how difficult it is to find a workshop where ideas and plans are alive, and how precious it is.
pottery.studio is by far the most gem-like workshop. Vid, who runs a loncic pottery, focuses on ‘experiencing’ pottery and how it can enrich even our daily lives.

This fall, I had a valuable experience in Ljubljana where I was able to hear where Vid's new attempts and plans were inspired and what stories were accumulated leading up to running the pottery vacation.

In addition, I was able to learn how to make traditional Slovenian pottery and how to use the unique leather tool (large cowhide).🙏

We had the pleasure of hosting a pottery class for the wonderful group from . Located in the serene Goričko region of Slovenia, our venue at Mala Rosa offered a picturesque setting amidst beautiful edible roses and organic goodness.

From learning about Slovenian pottery tradition to indulging in relaxed mingling, it was a truly lovely experience. 🌹❤️
