Craig K. from Ireland found a James II Half Crown, 1690!
Craig shares, “My best find ever! These coins were made from melted down Guns and Old Church bells which gives it the nickname "Gunmoney" The coins were paid to soldiers and would be repaid after the war with Gold and Silver. Unfortunately, James lost and it rendered the money worthless. I'll never find a better coin!”

Vaughan’s Garrett Favorite Find for September 2021 is the Hoard of 17th Century James 1 and Charles 1 Coins, found by Tom B. from the UK with his Ace 250.

Tom’s success story: Hi, I managed to find a soldiers civil war coin hoard with the Garrett Ace 250 and just wanted to say what a great detector it is. It was 10 gold and 8 silver coins, I was speaking to a guy at Regton's (one of your distributors) at a detecting event and he mentioned to email you. The hoard is mentioned on Regton's website, and few other places online it can be found under Taunton civil war coin hoard. Thanks for your time. Keep up the good work.

From the Somerset County Gazette: Civil War’s soldier’s wages found in Taunton - almost 400 years on. The 18 silver and gold coins uncovered in a garden in Nerrols Farm, Taunton, totaled £5 5s 33⁄4d – 5 1⁄2 months wages for a common soldier in the 17th Century and £450 in today’s value. But the hoard, probably belonging to a Royalist soldier and left during the siege of Taunton in 1645, could fetch thousands of pounds when it is bought by the town’s Museum of Somerset. An inquest, which concluded the coins are treasure, heard how they were found by a young man in October as he took down a tree in his parents’ garden so they could build a workshop. His mother told the hearing in Taunton: “He saw something glistening so he took it out and realised it was a coin. He started to dig deeper and eventually found 18 coins in total.”

The coins – Thirteen from England, four Scotland and one Ireland – date from between 1601 and 1645. It is thought they were possibly stashed in a leather purse, which has since rotted away.

A report from The British Museum says: “The coins belong to the reigns of James I and Charles I and the period they cover and the denominations present are very similar to many other recorded coin hoards from the mid- 17th Century, the period of the English Civil War. They are a highly selected group of good condition, high value coins and do not simply reflect the general coinage in circulation at the time.”

Congratulations to this month’s Apex Top Finds contest winner Harry M. from the United Kingdom!
Harry shares, “On my second outing with my new shiny Apex I hit a lucky steal. Let me just say this first; the Apex is absolutely amazing and a real coin magnet! On only my second outing I found a Charles the 2nd 1685 super scarce and rare tin farthing, followed by two Roman coins, and to top it off, an Edward the 1st silver hammered coin, all in one hunt! The Apex is so simple and yet so effective – 100% best machine I’ve used and I’ve used a lot. That is my story of my Apex so far. I’ve got some great land so I’m sure you’ll hear from me again!”

Annemiek S. shares her Garrett success story: “I found this very cool coin with the AT Max and the Viper coil. It is a coin from the Ottoman Empire (1800) Sultan Mahmut II. Mahmut II (Istanbul, July 20, 1785 – there, July 1, 1839) was the 30th sultan of the Ottoman Empire. He succeeded his brother Mustafa IV in 1808. Found in a meadow in the Netherlands.”

Vaughan's favourite find for August 2021 is the 17th Century Copper Coins Hoard, discovered by Andrey F. from Europe with his Ace 400i.

Andrey’s success story: The best day of the passing summer. The usual hot weekend in August did not bode well for anything unexpected. I sat on the veranda drinking my morning coffee. Suddenly my friend called. Two hours later, sweating under the last rays of the setting summer sun, we made our way with metal detectors along the vast harvested wheat field. Suddenly, there was a loud bell sound on my Garrett ACE 400i. After sweeping the coil at different angles, I realized that there was something interesting underground! Yes! Love that Garrett bell trill! I started digging. A silhouette of my comrade could be seen in the distance.

Having dug a hole deep into the bayonet of a shovel, the signal became even clearer and stronger! Here’s another half-bayonet, and the shovel hit some kind of vessel! Only one thought flashed through my head - this is a treasure!! And so it was! Yeees! I carefully began to rip up the ground around the find. From the pit, the outlines of a not small clay pot were already visible. It took my breath away. My heart sank, caught my breath a little, and pounded in my chest again. From a pit about 20 inches deep I took out a medieval pot stuffed to the top with 17th century fine copper coins !! This moment cannot be conveyed in words! The feeling of indescribable euphoria, joy, happiness and pride in my favorite metal detector overwhelmed my soul of a search engine on that wonderful day! Garrett!

Thank you for your reliable and so beloved devices!
The hoard of coins was donated to the Poltava Museum of Local Lore.

Simon M. in New Zealand has had some luck with his first prospecting trips with the Garrett GM24k.
Simon shares, “I took the 24K out for its first gold hunt today; very impressive. The Goldmaster 24k has taken over as my primary VLF gold detecting unit now. It handled everything I threw at it and did very well to get gold in this well-detected area. The 10x6” coil is very sensitive and was able to find a very small piece of gold. Totally impressed by it.”

Digger Dawn took the Reaper coil to test its depth on a hoard side! Previously, there was a hoard of Edward the Confessor silver coins found there, and the site has since been absolutely battered by a load of detectorists.
While digging her second hole, she found a 750-year-old silver coin. She shares, “My saying now is: the Reaper’s a Keeper, cause the Reaper goes deeper!! The silver coin was a Henry 3rd dated between1367 – 1413. I found it with the Apex and Reaper coil!”

Brandon’s Garrett Success Story:
“I was out detecting using my new Garrett Apex at a “hunted out” city park that once was a Civil War training camp. I was digging every signal because you just never know what you can find. While digging every bottle cap, pull tab, and soda can along an old cobblestone road, I got a solid 87 VDI on my Apex. I dug down about 6 inches and what looked like a typical piece of shiny round can slaw turned out to be the biggest/heaviest piece of silver I’ve ever had the pleasure to dig, weighing in at 1.85 ounces of sterling silver.
After researching the hallmarks, I learned it was a sterling silver cane topper made between 1830-1865 in London. How it ended up in the woods along the side of an old road in a park is beyond me. I like to think of little scenarios of how it came to rest there for me to find 150+ years later. It’s the amazing and unique historical items I find that drive me to keep rescuing history one hole at a time. Glad to always have my Garrett products to help me save history!”

Chris S. from the UK found a George III silver shilling of 1820 and a new metal detecting partner!
He said, “The success story here is that for the first time my wife accompanied me metal detecting on a local farm, and boom! The first thing that pops out of the ground is this silver George III shilling in awesome condition. The real success though is that my wife enjoyed it and might be looking for her own detector!”
